Some dumps have no picking policies, but others it's fair game. Also offering the workers a few bucks will likely get you somewhere, after all, money talks.

I really want to go to the dump as almost any bike I find there is better than my current bike less situation, and after I'm done with it I would gladly turn it over to someone who then needs it more than me just go get someone else into biking.

Usually an outside scrap dealer pays for the rights. Find out who they are and you'll get to see the big pile.

The dump (or as they like to refer to it these days, "The Transfer Station", in my town has a Swop Shop, a building where people leave things they no longer need or want. It is for the townspeople only, however. Although occasionally someone from away gets in.

toytech 12-10-10 10:04 PM

picked this up today, pretty sure it is 80-81 Trek 510 pretty nicked up but should be decent with a full overhaul and cleanup, bar tape etc.
It is a big one 61cm/58cm ctc Ishiwata 022 tubing

tugrul 12-10-10 10:52 PM

Picked up an early 70s Dawes Galaxy, brown with yellow bands on the Reynolds 531 main tubes, light to moderate surface rust, some of the chrome having seen better days. It came with Huret stem shifters, front derailleur and a twisted Allvit rear derailleur. Cottered Stronglight crank, Weinmann Vainqueuer 999 610 front/750 rear, Brook B5N saddle, Atom quick releases and presumably Atom high flange hubs, alloy rims, GB stem and seat post free. Photos next day or two.

Unfortunately it is 21" frame, which is much too small for me.

Anyone near Boston have a too large 24"/25" project bike they want to trade? :)

I have been looking for a cheap tandem that I can do some charity rides with my oldest daughter with next year. At the last second I threw in a $50 bid on E-bay on this Kuwahara and to my surprise I won it for $31. It was about 45 minutes away in central Jersey, but well worth the trip.

The only downside was it needed the drive side bottom stay welded. But a friend of mine took care of it for the price of a lunch and a beer. He has been welding professionally for 30 years so I have no problem with it holding.

It is a bit small for me but should be fine for anything under 30 miles.

Could you provide us with the address to this "transfer station"? Do they check photo ID's? :innocent:

It's a good thing I don't have a camera at the moment, as there would be a photo of the stupid grin on my face right now :D. Just picked up a Fuji Touring Series VII. I admit I had so much tunnel vision with classicfuji.com, it didn't occur to me anything came after the Touring Series V :p

Seller photo for now:

This soothes the pain of the 21" Novara Randonee that I acquired. At 23", it's small but hopefully not too small, with the riser stem and what not.

Bikepedia seems to have a faithful description of the bike as a 1993. I haven't closely ogled it yet, but the frame looks mint save a couple of nicks, but no bubbling or anything. The plastic cover on the head badge hasn't fallen off yet. The saddle and tires do look sad though.

Yaay!

conbon 12-12-10 01:39 PM

I picked this out of the trash probably 5 years ago, so when I was 14. Bent fork, found a replacement at the local co-op for $5, then went to town at bike shops for new tires, tubes, grips, full v-brake set, cables, grip shifters, seat, and pedals for a combined total of about $200. Spent every day after school at a buddy's dads house where he tought me everything about a bike and we rebuilt it from the ground up. It could just be the fact that all I had owned up to this point was 40lb Mongoose full suspension bikes, but I swear this thing had to be sub-20lbs! Rode it a couple tiems ont some local trails, then ended up selling it on CL for like $50 that winter because I couldn't cut grass anymore and I needed money, really kick myself for that one. But, I'm now 19, have worked in a bike shop as a mechanic for 2 years now, and I'm an avid MTB'r, and I owe it all to my badass Raleigh!
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...thIMGP0729.jpg

I ended up posting a "WTB my old bike back" ad on CL about 2 years ago (right before I started working in a shop and realized what I could buy) and the guy ended up giving it back to me. He said he had jsut bought it for the $200 worth of parts for $50, and that the frame had just been sitting around for a couple years now. I decided it wasn't worth my money to re-re-build it, so now the frame is sitting in a buddies basement waiting to be turned into a tall-bike. Heres a better picture of the frame, and how it looked when i got it back.

I was test driving my Suburban around the neighborhood today & spotted this sitting on someone's trash pile. After stopping and inquiring with the owner of the house whether they intended to throw the bike out, it was mine. It was funny, she said "you know the tires are flat, right?" Don't know what I'll do with it, but I did save it from the trash (literally)...if the "70" on the Bendix brake is an indication, it's a 1970 Western Flyer Galaxy Flyer

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...laxy_flyer.jpg

and, I snagged this lovely not-so-vintage Giant Innova (does that mean "it doesn't go" in another language?) complete with bum-oriented bar extensions...this one was a whoppin' $10 and will receive one my many take-off road drivetrains, drop bars, etc. and be a cyclocross/AT road bike...I've been wanting to build one of these. It had front rack lugs on the fork...bonus!

GM had some troubles selling the Nova ... "no go" ... back in the day. Pays to do your homework.

Nice steel mid-1990s hybrid with 700C wheel set, especially at that price. IHMO, it sure looks like an OK base for a cyclocross or touring (if rear rack & fender mounts) rebuild.

fiataccompli 12-12-10 04:29 PM

yeah, I flipped a similar (GT) bike like that a while back for a friend (so, it wasn't something where I really wanted to buy it from him) and I've helped friends out fixing their similar fitness type bikes and I'd always thought if I found one for a good price I'd try out that sort of rebuild. It's chromoly throughout and made nicely enough (if not a bit too beefy). The slightly wider 700c rims (and amazingly enough not wrecked, run over or otherwise fouled) are a bonus but I fear/expect to find them to be very flimsy when put to real use.

GM supposedly had some embarassing moments with the Nova model name in Spain, as I recall it. Pays to proofread your posts, too. :o

Not a bike, but how about a brand new C&V-esque pannier?

After being bummed about not really finding anything good lately, VV had a Minnehaha Utility Pannier hanging with their backpacks. Still has the tissue paper on all the Drings. Plus it has the shoulder strap and eyelet hook. Not a bad find.

Had somebody I sold a frame to tell me about a sports consignment shop that had some parts I might be interested in. Told me there was a set of 600/Ultegra tricolor cranks like new and two sets of 7 speed brifters. Told me about the place on Tuesday but I have been covered up at work and just couldn't get down there till today.
The brifters were gone but the cranks were there as was a matching rear derailleur and a set of 105 triples. :thumb: The tricolors are dated 95. I picked up a 2002 Ultegra FD to go with the RD. The 105 triples date out as 96.

I'm thinking my 98 R300 built with a 105SC group making it basically a R800 (in the 98 catalog) has aspirations to become a R1000.

Been in a slump but maybe I have got past it today with Trek 420 at a good price.

My first light tourer in my size range. I had picked up a 420 that was a bit small for me 2 years ago but really liked it and thought it would be a bike I wouldn't mind finding in my size.

Paint has some big chips on the seat tube. My guess is it was riding on a bike rack and got a peddle from another bike rubbing it there. No dents but the paint has suffered badly.

Best part is fully ridable as is and according to the PO it was built up not long ago by his buddy that is a bike mechanic. Minor adjustment on the RD, spokes were a little loose and some air in the tires and it was good to go. Everything is butter smooth.

Needs to be cleaned (looks like it was rode down a wet gravel road) but it doesn't need to be serviced. Cables look brand new. Its missing its original simplex derailleurs. They have been replaced by 90's Acera. The brake levers have been replaced with SLR's.

The best part is its missing its 27 inch wheels and Mallard Helicomatic. In its place is a a set of polished 700c CR18's on 105 hubs with a 7speed hyperguild cassette. It is my optimum size of 61cm. :D

I have two sets of 105 indexed down tubes that would work perfect on this bike in place of the frictions I might toss on it but it actually shifts quite nice as it is.

Hmmmm Now I have to really get rid of something. Not sure if I hate finding bikes at flipper prices in my size worse then finding them not in my size. When they ride this nice and actually fit me its sort of hard to part with when I have too many keepers. :( http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=182821

raverson 12-19-10 08:07 PM

Nice pickup.

I have that same '84 420 in a 56cm sitting in the shop. Nice to know the stock brakes have no reach issues with the 700c wheels.

A few weeks ago I took a chance by going to look at a pair of Ross bikes that had been hanging around CL for a while that the seller had dramatically dropped the price on. Bad pictures in the ad almost made me not want to bother, but the result was a great condition little 3 speed and a Ross Professional with a little dent in the top tube and a really wonky back wheel.

The Professional yielded a pretty complete Shimano 600 group -- the crank is a triple and I have the brake levers but I didn't get them in the picture.

And what that stuff was hanging on.

I saw a Ross like that post here in Atlanta for $80 but I couldn't go chase after it but it had a Double. I think it was a 1020 High Ten straight Gage tube frame. Whats that one?

sonatageek 12-23-10 02:43 PM

It is butted (double butted maybe) hi-tensile steel. Don't see that combination very often.

Grim 12-23-10 04:34 PM

Its not vintage but I got a smoking deal on it so had to share. Its missing part of the seat clamp so it has the seat and post of my mountain bike on it.

I have sold quite a few flippers for close to what I paid for this one. I could list it and probably make a quick $200 on it. Its 2001 R1000si, Utegra STI, 105 brakes and Campy wheels and hubs.
The only thing that would have made this any better is if it had been my size. So the good bits are going to end up on my R300 and I'll either sell it as parts or rebuild it with the 105 parts that are on the R300.

The triple seems to be home-made by squeezing a redundant ring in the middle. I would think the BCD would preclude a real triple. What size are the rings?

Good eye! It is an interesting combination. Looks like a 52 45 39. Almost looks like a freaky half step.
