Where are the shifters? Are you going to add a front derailleur?

Same place as the other 6 gears. Looks like it is a single speed to me and using a RD as a tensioner.
I really want to give single speed and extended run but MAN! have I got some ugly hills around here!

It is set up as a single speed and as noted, the Shimano 600 rear d is serving as a chain tensioner as there isn't anything better for that.

Will consider running a 1 by X set up after I get the frame and fork restored and the 71 gear inches is pretty nice for urban assaults... if I take her off road I will need some lower gearing and would rather have multiple gears for that.

Not sure this is a catch at all. At least it was cheap, typical low thrift store price. Lots of rust on the frame and spokes. I assumed I would be able to salvage just a couple of parts, I almost did not buy it. So far, I am ahead on salvageable parts: seat post, pedals, FD and RD, rims and hubs should be OK.

I was expecting a stuck seat post. But it came out. The handlebar stem is still stuck.... This is my fourth 1973 Nishiki International in the last two months, and the third blue one.

I also picked up two MTB wheelsets at the local G.W. thrift store (they sell stuff that does not sell in the stores, by the pound). Why am I buying MTB wheels???? I have already sworn off all MTBs. But they rotate stock from the clearance center directly to the trash compactor, and I could not see two wheelsets going to the landfill. One has decent Mavic rims, and Shimano STX hubs, the other has Weinman rims and generic Shimano hubs. 3/4 still had the skewers.

OK, this was a really stupid catch. Not sure why I picked this bike up. I was hoping it was a folder, but it wasn't. It does have a nice rack, and fenders (that need some attention). Bike is pretty clean overall. Not sure what I am going to do with it. The chrome bits will be hitting the acid bath for sure. I figure the half gone decal is from the selling bike shop, but I do not know. Sturmey Archer hub is a model "AW". Looking for a date code.

The C/L ad was kind of funny, listing it as an "Australian kids bike". The chain guard is kind of interesting.

I've wanted a folder for a long time. My rich cousin in the 1960s had a Raleigh folder. Still haven't found one....

Not a bad looking bike. It does appear to have similar lines to a Twenty. Not all of the Twentys are folders either. If the platform seems strong and well built, you may want to consider making a Puch version of a modified Sheldon Brown Twenty out of it.

wrk101 09-24-10 09:19 PM

Yes, I have started doing a little research on folders. Apparently, many of them came as "compact" bikes, and not folders. I'll dig into it and see how it comes out.

HSean 09-26-10 08:26 AM

Speaking of folders, Feast your eyes on my score I got yesterday. Seems like it has weird size wheels, good thing they have alot of life left in that

Love those racks!

HSean 09-26-10 08:48 AM

Yeah, I really dig this bike, but I kinda did something I shouldn't have, theres a cuff lock on the back, I couldn't resist and locked it, theres no keyhole, the little reflector moves in three possitions, anybody know how to open before I cut it?

Amani576 09-26-10 11:17 AM

Have you tried moving the lever you closed it with? Try moving it around with the reflector. I'm surprised there's no keyhole.

HSean 09-26-10 11:32 AM

I tried that too as well as many other things, i'll make a thread and see what everybody has to say.

ahson 09-26-10 04:57 PM

Not really a saved from the dump but saved from it's previous owner who didn't really care about this bike. Got some time today and made a HDR version of the picture. Planned to upgrade on certain components very soon, more to come..

Thanks to Bianchigirll & Devinfan. Thanks for the help and also your valuable time to help me on this bike!

Can anyone tell me what the proper PSI these babies should be inflated to?

Hope everyone enjoys a chuckle or two.

I don't see what's so sexy about her bike. ;)

I also 'saved' a vintage mtb today...a (1992 ?) GT Tequesta, posted on CL for $15. The pics were vague but the seller declared the bike needed a lot of work. And the size wasn't clear either. I took a chance and drove over to find a 21" frame, Suntour XCE and X1 drivetrain, and one bad-ass paint job. Bike was dirty, tires dry rotted and seat torn, but the overall, the frame is in very good shape. Only bad thing I found later was the seller engraved her name and SS# into the crank spider. Ruined the nice Suntour triple. :(
Also not digging the U-brake!
21" is a bit large for me, not my ideal. Seller was a cute 6' 1" blonde. I'm going to clean her up, and maybe take Sixty-Fiver's route on his mtb acquisition.
Something tells me my eldest stepson will take this to college next year.

Oh man, thats a nice paint job. If you wanted that today it would have an up-charge and fall under custom paint. Very nice!

ish 09-28-10 05:31 PM

Found an older Silca Super Pista pump at a garage sale for $5. Busted gauge, and probably needs a rebuild, but I was happy to find it. I've been looking for one of these at a reasonable price for a while.

The Peugeot folders came with 20 inch fractional or, if my memory serves, 22 by 1.75 inch / 457mm wheels and the tyres for these are still available and I can order them from, my supplier.

If your bike has the rarer 500A / 440mm you are going to be hard pressed to find new rubber.

Nice score, (your taste in beer sucks), and your dog is a sweetheart... one of our great desires is to have a golden as my fiancee grew up with these wonderful and kind hearted dogs and my daughters love them as well.

Nice thing about have a Shih Tzu is that I could pack a dozen of them in my trailer (also a freebie) if I wanted to.

I really like those Peugeot racks as they handle modern bags really well and being steel, are very solid and are not unduly heavy.
