Whatever you do, PLEASE don't put that big honking POS Tourney crank on it? They're acting all backordered on it anyway. I have been waiting over a month for a replacement. I called them two weeks in, when the customer started calling me twice a day to get his bike back. They said a week and a half before they would ship then. That was two weeks ago Friday. We'll see.,,,,BD

Your wife made a great score I dig the purple Rockhopper it makes a great base for upgrading with some shiny goodness.
I still have two of the Shimano Warranty kits sitting here waiting for a bike to use them on. |

Well, the Dump coughed up a real nice old Peugeot Sprint in great shape, today...
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225193 Also waiting for me was this really old Radio Flyer racing car. Wonder if it was worth picking up... http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225190 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225192 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225194 Sadly, my truck was full and I had to leave a late sixties Raleigh Folder sitting there along with a Suteki Mixte road bicycle... http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225191 |

I won't make the same mistake twice. The Rockhopper will get proper attention. My wife is even more aesthetically discerning. LOL! I have a salvaged Alivio crank off a Schwinn MOAB w/ rusted frame. It'll complement the rest of the Alivio group on there. And yes Glenn, lot's of polishing with Simichrome and rubbing compound ahead. ;) |
thrown awaY BIKES at the LBS
Mongoose, Schwinn High Sierra, Cannondale MB, Royce union alu, all were free oh and a Trek 2000 just picked them up and took them home. Oh I did buy a Miyata 914 for a hundred dollars and a Peugot Course for 50 dollars so it all works out to neat bikes for next to nothing. I used to race and have lots of other classic bikes.

Picked up a late 1980s Bianchi Axis tonight. I was hoping for Celeste, no such luck. Needs some TLC, but everything is there. Suntour date codes are EH: August 1988, so I am thinking 1989.

This evening, I acquired this vintage Cannondale R500. It's a 3.0 series from 1993.
Under the thick layer of AZ desert dust, is a lovely two-tone blue fade paint job. A full overhaul is scheduled after a thorough cleaning. It has Shimano RX100 components, 7-spd HG and DT shifters. Rims are Mavic MA40. It came fully outfitted with Cannondale bags, wireless computer and mini-pump. Seller was diagnosed with heart problems and was on blood thinners. Doctor informed him walking is the only activity he could partake in. :( I paid more than I usually would, the seller was flooded with responses to his CL listing so he wouldn't budge on the price. But I've always wanted a Cannondale for my collection, and this one was my size and in very good condition. It was still a deal at the asking price. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6221/...ebdfb375_b.jpg Cannondale R500 by WNG555, on Flickr |

I don't think it was the black lightning era bikes that rode harshly? IMHO, it was the Cad 3 , made right after they abandoned the extended dropout design. Wow, that was one BAD riding road bike. I put on a CF post trying to tone it down some, but no dice. The saddle actually began to buzz painfully over some types of pavement. Just amazing how a frame design could go so wrong.
I am still dreaming of a DT shifted C'dale. Never been lucky enough to find one yet. Almost got lucky a few weeks ago, but the person who had just bought it from a passerby wouldn't dream of selling it. An 85ish R600 in charcoal grey. It would have cleaned up nice.,,,,BD |
Tri-color road shoes!?!? Haha
I found these at the nearby thrift-store in my size! They came with black Look delta style cleats but will also accept 2-hole SPD. In like-new condition, never worn! They match my Paramount nicely but I doubt I'll use them. Notice the upper strap has a tag that uses the same colors of tri-color 600 parts. Noice!!!

Got my daughter a really nice Schwinn Transit that literally came out of a dumpster.
Looked virtually unridden right down to the nubs and excess rubber from moulding the tires, aired it up tires, washed it down and it looks and rides like brand new! What possesses people to throw away bikes like this is beyond me. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...s/DSC06571.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...s/DSC06572.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...s/DSC06573.jpg |
They were only giving it to the dumpster divers...

Those 600 tri-color shoes kick ass!!!!
Is it just me (probably), but is the tri-color stuff becoming collectable? |

This morning, on my way to the Bicycles for Humanity storage facility, I passed by a house that, at one time, had on old Raleigh Competition, with a badly bent frame which would have been much to big for me anyway. Anyway...
I continued on my way to the facility, helped to lead the loading of approximately 500 bicycles, and components, and wheels, and books, and some tools for gardening and mechanical work. Our little group managed to stuff the shipping container full to the top. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225824 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225827 Finishing up, just before 3pm, I waited for the last volunteer to leave, locked the gate and headed for the Dump, which is, sort of, on the way home. I got my reward for my day of good deeds. Pitched away in one of the blue scrap metal bins, I found an old Raleigh Competition and a nice, first time I ever saw one, Falcon Black Diamond. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225823 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225825 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=225826 Needless to say, the Falcon is a no fit but the Raleigh looks to be right on the money. Yahoo! At last I have a nice old English bicycle in my little collection. N+1 strikes again! |
no bikes lately, but tools are almost as good.
Crank and fork straightening tools, seat tube gauge and spoke wrench. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c1...t/42ea69e6.jpg |

I picked up a pair of bowling shoes last week because they had a nice stiff sole, and I suspected they would work well for cycling (I'm not a fan of clipless pedals.) I've got about 80 miles on them now, and they're excellent on the classic quill pedals that normally cause my toes to go numb when wearing sneakers. The shoes are Etonics' ESL model.
Not exactly a subtle color scheme, but what the heck... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p...030_143208.jpg |
I wonder how those would look/work with spd cleats on them, hehe. Looks cool!,,,,BD:D

Thrifty store find, sat in the rain for a few days and was about to be sent to the dump... Super cheap and rides so well... Centurion Dave Scott, 1985.

Panasonic Sport LX 1989
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...portLX1989.jpg
I bought this about 3 weeks ago off of CL and it only cost me $20! It's a 12spd 1989 Panasonic Sport LX and it's nothing special but it was the right price so I went and picked it up. The guy I bought it from said that it was bought new sometime in the late 80's and ridden maybe a handful of times. It had then spent the next 21+ years hanging in his garage collecting dust. This bike is definitely a low end model, but the components are Shimano SIS derailleurs, SR Custom Crank, Shimano SIS Column Shifters, original Viscount saddle, Weinmann rear rim with Maillard hub, Araya front rim with a Joytec hub, and Panasonic brakes calipers with Star brake levers. I'm not sure why there are 2 different brand rims and 2 different brand hubs? The frame is in superb shape with maybe 4 small nicks in the paint at most... (Probably from being knocked into over the years). The brake pads were all pretty much brand new but the cables were crumbling at the slightest touch and all the gum on the tires has rotted away. I will have to replace those and clean off the accumulated dirt. Also the stickers on the frame have cracked and are deteriorating which is ok because i plan on getting some new "classic" Panasonic logo decals for it. This bike is 99% rust free except for slight surface rust that can be taken care of with some steel wool. I am going to fix it up for my girlfriend and see how she likes it. It needs a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to what it will look like when it's done. This is a great first bike for me to fix up because it's not a particularly expensive bike but it has a lot of potential because its in really good shape. I'll post more pictures when I finally finish it. |
I received my Univega Gran Primeo from the Davis bike collective. Stayed up there for about 2 months before I decided to take it for myself. Surprised that no one snagged it earlier. It has the suntour 9000 derailers, cinelli stem and handlebar, unknown brake levers, some weird SR seat post, averx cranks and whatnot. Oh yeah, campy wheels.
Its too bad that the paint is all scratched up. Still free through, so I'm not complaining. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/5664/dscn1877m.jpg |

Just got this Japanamount frame, front wheel, and parts. It was set up as a fixie and did not come with a rear wheel or derailleurs. I threw on some random components (definitely an upgrade from RX100 stock - an Ultegra RD and a 600 Tricolor FD) and a rear wheel (Matrix Titan) from an old Trek 560. This FrankenJapanamount will be my winter bike/beater.
