Not quite vintage but I think rigid Mtb's from the nineties are the best allround bikes you can buy for very little money.

Did you have the guy in a headlock when you were negotiating? :D "How about $50?" http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2017/...4ba9bb4b7f.jpg |

This contraption (Raleigh Technium Scott Tinley) seems to have jumped into my car yesterday. Can anyone ID the hubs? They look a little like Hi-e, but no markings.

I think whoever owned your bike before replaced the wheels set with what you have, probably swapped off another bike. The Hi-E products started the early 70's and went until about the late 90's. Some of the high end hubs out today copied his hub designs! |

That is the name of the hubs! Hi-E Engineering brand custom engineered hubs by a guy name Harlan Meyers a brilliant (aerospace) engineer, making those hubs very rare because he only made a few. Are the rims Hi-E too? If so you may also have Hi-E nipples and Hi-E stainless skewers. He's still alive last I heard in his 70's, but he no longer makes the Hi-E line of stuff any more. He also made bicycle frames, pedals etc again extremely rare but very well made.

The PO did tell me that he replaced the original wheels and these cost him $400. The rims are Matrix. According to T-Mar's post on this thread, the bike appears to be a 1987. |
I just sold a step through Raleigh to a woman in AR that had that grip shifter on it. The Color was Gold on Gold~~ did I say it was Gold!! I'd never seen one before either. The guy I bought it from thought it was a single speed. I guess he couldn't count the cables coming from the bars. Sold it on Feebay last week.

Thanks. It's a neat color that doesn't quite come across in pictures. A deep, metallic red, with a hint of orange/brown. I may try to wax them both up before they move on to their giftees. Should look great. (Thankfully, they're ten to fifteen centimeters too small for me, so I won't be tempted to keep them.)
It's too bad that any extant padding in the Wright saddles has long since degraded to the point where you're sitting on a sprung piece of vinyl-covered steel, because they sure look good. The grip shifter on the black one is interesting. Never seen one of 'em before. |

I think perhaps you misunderstood my post. I meant that there are no markings on these hubs, but the shape resembles Hi-e hubs that I've seen. I wouldn't think that there would be unbranded Hi-e hubs(?)
Gotta say, those tri bars are really hideous!! |

I am pretty certain that those are American Classic hubs, their minimalist skewers are distinctive.

In looking at the bars... I don't think I could reach the shifters with my arms on the rests.

Thanks for the info. The hubs do seem pretty smooth, yes.
Yeah, I'm thinking the tri bars will go. This will be a flip bike and the odds of someone wanting those are slim I think. The PO also had a gizmo on the seatpost to offset the saddle forward by a couple inches. Very different than the cockpit I'm used to. |
Took the bike to physio this morning... added the rack, light, and pump (lower peg was wrecked) yesterday to make the bike a little more utilitarian which is what a Raleigh Sports should be.
http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...rtglenora2.JPG Changed he saddle to a Wrights 35N when I got home as this suits the bike's set up better... the B66 can live on my Twenty for a while as it suits the upright position very well. |

wow, I have to say I just love that chainring.
The crank and bottom bracket will be the next area I work on to straighten the chain wheel and replace a slightly bent spindle... one can see where someone installed the cotter pins with a hammer which is never good for spindles. |
Got my High Sierra built up over the weekend. I seem to have less and less time to take pics lately, but I will try in the next few days. 86 in Ivory/hershey color. early nineties Trek 8000 gear. Grand total on the weight? ONE ounce heavier than my aluminum framed P-1, at 30 pounds 7 ounces. The P-1 doesn't have a Brooks saddle and CrMo bullmoose bars either. No one can tell me bikes have evolved "that" much, hehe.,,,,BD

This evening, I acquired this vintage Cannondale R500. It's a 3.0 series from 1993.
Under the thick layer of AZ desert dust, is a lovely two-tone blue fade paint job. A full overhaul is scheduled after a thorough cleaning. It has Shimano RX100 components, 7-spd HG and DT shifters. Rims are Mavic MA40. It came fully outfitted with Cannondale bags, wireless computer and mini-pump. Seller was diagnosed with heart problems and was on blood thinners. Doctor informed him walking is the only activity he could partake in. :( I paid more than I usually would, the seller was flooded with responses to his CL listing so he wouldn't budge on the price. But I've always wanted a Cannondale for my collection, and this one was my size and in very good condition. It was still a deal at the asking price. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6221/...ebdfb375_b.jpg Cannondale R500 by WNG555, on Flickr |
