A few more including the wheel and tires I am going to run on the Gt thanks to Chris in Miami for turning me on to them.

Found a 60's czechoslovakian Favorit F1 frame, and a 60's swedish monark ultra lyx frame. then I found a SR Road Champion Sakae Custom handlebar with matching SR stem. I also got a pair of Weinmann brake levers, and a pair of Shimano brake levers. not bad for a first dump find!
Should be fun to do something with that Favorit.. Oh, does anyone know what BB threads there is on the Favorit? I've heard rumours about italian threads, but you never know.. |
Wow Glenn, what an impressive haul! :-o
the DB Override is sharp, she's going to love it. Boy would I love finding a NOS set of better Shimano U brakes! Need to replace my ugly stamped steel/plastic coated Exage that came on my Sierra. |
Some times it pays to get up early...
Parted out a Vitus 979 Carbone 3 at the co-op and came away with a nearly full Dura Ace 7400 group with '89 DA Uniglide hubs (I have lots of cogs) laced to tubulars (36 spoke)... crown race was thrashed but other parts are still good and the bike had a Campagnolo bottom bracket (English thread) that was also in good shape. Thinking I might convert my Cooper to a full Dura Ace group (if everything fits) and see how light she is with tubulars... the 7400 crank is a pretty thing and was looking for a comparable Ultegra square taper crank and some later cassette hubs to lace 32x to some NOS Mavics I have. Oh yeah... also came with a rear tri spoke (tt wheel). |
Must have been a slow day around here...
Picked up my friend's Dawes Kingpin tonight... it was a project he started but never finished as he passed away this summer suddenly and unexpectedly at only 27. His family decided that they wanted to give me the folder since we were good friends and fellow bike nerds and guess he talked about me a fair bit as being a bad influence when it came to bicycles. He also had a Raleigh Superbe and a Kuwahara much like my UAV as well as a beautiful Trek road bike which we sent back to his family. I have to admit that the Dawes in nicer than a 20 in many respects as it has standard threading and is a lighter frame and got to thinking that I now have all these Dura Ace parts... I would just have to lace those hubs into 451 rims (unless someone wants to send me hubs and take the tubbies off my hands.) Talked to a few of our friends tonight and they thought he would have heartily approved of a Dura Ace equipped Dawes... so that is what we are going to do. |
^ sounds like a fun project.
I did pick up a free box of parts the other night that included a nice 6500 FD (that I needed for my cross bike!), an older but usable Sakae crankset, a scratched up but working left 6500 STI lever and.......an old Nuovo Record rear derailleur. There were a few other items as well. Due to some mix-ups on my part it took me two days to pick up the parts but they were still just sitting there outside the house in a box. Must have been my lucky day. |

Miyata 710, 1984, I think.
My thread asking about this got rightfully moved to the appraisal forum. I paid $70. . There's a tiny almost invisible dent in the top tube. A "new" shimano derailleur Lots of paint scratches. Its also clearly not a 58cm as advertised and certainly not "mint" as advertised and look at that horrible sticker on the drive side. But a really nice bike, given all that. . http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6116/...97829050_b.jpg . http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6094/...bfb71171_b.jpg . |
Always finding parts and my stash of old wheels has really improved this week which will help complete some projects...
Scored some low flange Campy hubs laced to Mavic tubulars and some earlier high flange record hubs laced to a pair of perfect 27 inch Super Champion clincher rims with NO Specialized tyres. That, and a 26.4 Siimplex (steel) post with a burgundy Fuji saddle... where is khatful as I am sure he will love this. |
Found a Raleigh Techinum "Obsession" mountain bike yesterday evening at a local thrift store. The first bike I have seen worth buying there since I moved here. The usual coating of garage dust and migratory grease around the components. Should clean up great! The price, even with 9% sales tax, was under ten bucks. Gonna go get some Eagle 1 A2Z wheel cleaner, and visit the car wash. That stuff is AWESOME for one step bike cleaning. Doesn't hurt anything but the dirt, hehe.,,,,BD
The funny thing is that someone threw out a pair of perfect condition gumwall "atb" tires at work on Friday. I dug them out of course. Now yesterday I find this bike with rotted tires, that are the exact same. How's that for timing? |
Found a NOS set of Alfredo Binda straps at an estate sale this morning. I was in and out of there probably 4 times over the course of the weekend and found a bunch of nice tools and a full 5-piece set of Cannondale panniers in awesome condition along with the Jim Blackburn front racks, some old Blumels Club Specials, etc. Didn't even see the straps until this morning but they should easily pay for the entire pile of other stuff.

Schwinn High Sierra. I offered to fix it for seller, but they said that should have happened 20 years ago. It ended up as a wall display. Someone had changed the tire and then re-attached the brakes with the fork spun around. The cables were all bunched to one side. Nice , small bike...

The Thunder Bay Dump was generous again, offering up a nice old GT Windstream and a lovely 47cm Nishiki International, which is soon to be sold. Got a couple of real old mountain bikes also, but no time for pics, yet...

By way of Divine Providence, and seriously positive Kharma, I came across a great deal on this 1983/84 Lotus Eclair 18-speed touring bike (made in Japan by Tsunoda) with racks, panniers, and a bunch of other accessories. It is mechanically sound, but I still cleaned and repacked the BB and head set, and I am going through it slowly when I am not out riding it. BTW, that's just grease from my grimey paws up there on the top tube.

Love that Lotus, nice find.
|
Nice Lotus.
. Love the Deore crankset with the bizarro big-bearing platform pedals. Had that setup on my first mtb. . |
Thanks for the compliments on the Lotus ... great, solid riding bike. I'm really happy with it.

I went out for a ride on my High Sierra yesterday found a free 85 Sierra:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y..._sierra_01.jpg I picked it up for the burly square-crown MTB fork: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b..._sierra_03.jpg The frame unfortunately, has the terminal rot: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-v..._sierra_02.jpg |
Grabbed a very beaten Giant ATX 760 yesterday. Frame is ugly but OK, but most everything else is battered to near destruction: Serious chain wear (pins badly scored); middle ring teeth worn to sharp points, outer and inner moderately worn; front derailleur cage almost worn through; freewheel cogs all worn to some degree; bottom bracket very loose; pedals beaten and stuck in the crank arms; saddle torn up; rims worn at braking surfaces (but straight); tires shot. Essentially, the frame, fork, cranks, canti brakes, rear derailleur, hubs, spokes, seatpost, and handlebar are serviceable; everything else needs overhaul or replacement. I plan to strip the frame, paint it, and slowly reassemble it in some form as I can afford to accumulate the parts necessary.
It probably isn't worth the effort or the investment, but I need a winter project, and the dump pickings around here usually consist exclusively of Walmart bikes, so when I saw something even halfway decent, I had to grab it. |

Re. This thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...=#post13313050
I stopped by an old dusty LBS by my work to look for a new US lock and a spare set of lights. In the display case, in a very yellowed plastic box.. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...0&d=1318869759 This completes the group! I am about to skip the last half of work to learn how to build wheels! Edit - The price tag: 44.95. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=223340 |
Nice score on the Sprint hubs, one of my favorite groups!
|
+1 on those Sprint hubs. Nice find. I purchased a set of Sprint pedals when they 1st came out because I couldn't justify the Superbe Pro ones. Good stuff, still as smooth as day one...should have bought more Sprint parts, but I was a Shimano fanboy at the time. ;)

One of our delivery drivers found this in the ditch abut a week and a half ago, majorly tacoed rear wheel, missing front and a rusty chain.
Cleaned it up, greased it, new chain, cables, swapping parts off his old Record and $35.00 later it's my sons new bike. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...s/DSC06417.jpg |

Looks like a model 440 I flipped a few years ago. It was a bit too big for me and a fellow made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Nice bike, good construction. Your son will enjoy it. |
