Wow...nice find. I know this is going back aways but I love the classics. I just liberated a 80s something Raleigh Pointe mtn bike (no pics yet). I'm replacing my Road Master because there is on good kickstand mounting where you would usually find, instead its mounted off to the side of the rear tire. I never worked anyway so I just took it off. I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the frame design.

The Dump regurgitates again. One GT Timberline mountain bicycle and a bunch of old Ten Speeds, including a Bianchi Strada...

My husband and I wanted a tandem but didn't want to pay much, one came along, a circa 1964 CCM Mark IV. It's been stripped and soaking in oxalic. Going to rattle can it and add some proper wheels and brakes and cold set the rear and add a few gears. The guy had the poor thing in pieces, it was rideable with a few adjustments. Coaster brakes + tandem = hell no.

Nice find, those 520's were great reliable bikes. By the way, was those photos taken last Christmas? Just wondering because there's a bunch of lawn care tools in their boxes behind the bike.

toytech 09-25-11 11:46 PM

Actually, the picture was taken today. We don't have a lawn, the sprayers are for fertilizer tea and my son's auto detailing chemicals and the leaf blower is my son's also for drying cars when detailing.

Just a pocket full of Campy bits, a very interesting seat post, and some old Diadora cleated road shoes in my size.

H over C, perhaps Hercules? Often the head badge was repeated on the seat tube.

That "7"-shaped seat post means it's pretty old. Like, 1930's old.

Looks like it has a 3-sp hub, which should tell you something, whether Hercules, Sturmey Archer, or other brand.

Post it again, with better photos, when you have it in hand.

Could be a Rollfast Harvard, haven't seen the bike and I have a 50s JC Higgins ladies 26" with a 7 post so it might not be that old.

Seatpost #2 this week! Might you post a picture and some background, now that my curiousity is piqued?

Thanks!

Bikedued 09-26-11 06:21 AM

Nice 520 and Concorde! Reminds me a little of the time I found a chrome old school Torker on the back of a recycling truck for ten bucks. Sold it to my vintage bmx buddy for $150 the same day. Nothing like seeing a flash of chrome in the mid morning sun, hehe.,,,,BD

Retrieved from the Grove. Chrome is Cool, Rust rubs right off in spots. Rear Hub, Junk :( Sprocket froze, dog springs disintegrated. All controls have become one with the universe and are frozen in time. New rear wheel, tire and shifting cable found this weekend. Forgot to grab a chain or I would be riding today. Picked up a new box of steel wool. Might have enough to knit a new coat.

Great score, you don't see many of those in chrome :thumb:

Welcome aboard!

How do you guys get so much stuff from the trash/dump? Just right place at the right time? I was at the dump/recycling center the other day and I asked a guy working there, but they don't pull bikes out and it sounds like I can't either. So, do you have to stop people before they chuck it in? Or are some dumps just better for grabbing stuff from?

Most dumps don't allow scavenging. Some have reuse areas. Best bet is to hit up metal recycle facilities near you. They won't get per pound what you can offer them for a mixed metal item...

Buy the guy that works there a 6 pack / make friends with him. My dad has been friendly with the 'dump guy' in my home town for years and mentioned to him that I like to ride and fix/sell old bikes. Now whenever a bike comes in he sets it off to the side. Nine times out of ten they are junk and when my dad gets there they just toss them in the metal dumpster. Sometimes it's a minty fresh 60's Raleigh Sports :) Now that I think of it though, nothing decent has come through the dump all summer. Patience is key when looking for old bikes (and not wanting to spend lots of money).
