Poor Sierra!!:(
Speaking of Sierras, my friend was trying to tell me about a High Sierra frame he had a cuple of months ago, and I just didn't listen to him. Well, I visited him this weekend , and he had it out for me to see in person. I was like "Duh, of course I'll take it" An 88 High Sierra frame that is cream/beige pearl in front, and rear triangle the color of a Hersheys wrapper. He gave it to me as part of a deal for the Burley tandem. Weird though, it doesn't have the pump peg on the back of the seat tube like my yellow 88 had, and the head tube joint is tigged not fillet brazed? Has the roller cams too~!:D Fast forward to today. I am minding my own business working on a repair bike, when a lady comes by saying she has an older Trek mtb in her car she wants to sell. My coworker and I walk out to see a 93ish aluminum Trek 8000 in pretty nice condition. Bone stock down to the black LX hubs, and LX/XT derailleur mix. I ask her how much she wanted for it, and a deal was struck for $80. I am now going to have a very nicely equipped 88 High Sierra:D, if I don't keep the bike in one piece. It's a pretty tough decision, hehe.,,,,BD |
Not Vintage but definitely a Catch.
1997 Cannondale Super V1000. Upgraded rear shock to a Rock Shock SID. Bad news is the HeadShok is hurting and not part available. Going to try to make some time to pull it apart and see if it just needs Orings. I can do a Cannondale Discounted upgrade to a newer version that is far supeiror to what I have but it will still be nearly 3 times what I paid for the bike. |
Just had a nice conversation with an older gentleman who was selling a bike he bought back in 1949 and he will be delivering it to me tomorrow... could be my catch of the year and understand it might need some air in the tyres and a few drops of oil a it has been stored in the garage for some years.
I think I can handle that. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...ighsports.jpeg |

Man I miss my old Sports, even though it wasn't quite that old.

You lucky guy! I saw that kijiji ad. But being down here in Calgary I was too far away. Nice price too!

A pair of Dunelts. Manufactured in 1963, according to the date codes on the AWs. Did I overpay for what aren't especially high-end or special bikes? Perhaps. Am I a sucker for old things that come in sets? You betcha. Is the condition kind of amazing for a pair of nearly 50 year old bikes? Indeed. Aside from the tires, grips, and rear brake cable on the red one, three of the four tubes, and a few various bolts, they appear to be all original. Yes, including the tires and the front tube (!) on the black one, the rest of the cables and housings, and the chains. Blink. I've dug into the red one, and despite the ancient grease having turned to glue, the stem and the seatpost came right out. These things have lived a charmed life, for sure. Neat. |
xdude - Nice catches there... the red Dunelt is a great looking bike.
|
Thanks. It's a neat color that doesn't quite come across in pictures. A deep, metallic red, with a hint of orange/brown. I may try to wax them both up before they move on to their giftees. Should look great. (Thankfully, they're ten to fifteen centimeters too small for me, so I won't be tempted to keep them.)
It's too bad that any extant padding in the Wright saddles has long since degraded to the point where you're sitting on a sprung piece of vinyl-covered steel, because they sure look good. The grip shifter on the black one is interesting. Never seen one of 'em before. |
Grip shifters on SA hubs are rarer than triggers... they did not function as reliably and for every SA grip shift I have seen I have seen hundreds of trigger equipped bikes.
They were not offered for that long and have only seen them on 60's bikes which have included quite a few SA equipped CCM's. |
It works pretty smoothly, but I'm planning to remove it anyway and replace it with a period-correct trigger, just to make the two bikes match even closer. :)

It's been a while since I've posted...so "HI!"
Last night he hubby brought home 4 bikes for me to work on......all from local thrift stores. I think he did pretty well for one days haul....:thumb: 1987 schwinn Traveler Paid 24.99 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...e/139_2066.jpg Nishiki Backroads paid 19.99 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...e/139_2065.jpg Univega Nuovotech 450 paid $12, This bike is my size so I'm fixing it up for myself :) http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...e/139_2070.jpg and a Raleigh Rampar R1 that I don't have a picture of yet. |
Here are a few more thrift store finds we've gotten in the last few weeks...
Schwinn Mesa Runner $10.....I LOVE these old mountain bikes! http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...e/139_1863.jpg Panasonic Sport LX 14.99 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...e/139_2049.jpg |
I need to go to Neeebraska... nice catches !
|
Wow VintageBikeGirl!! They are all in mint condition. At those prices, our offerings look like they went under the wheels of a garbage truck.
I also need to move to Nebraska. |
Thanks! They really are in great shape, all I've done to them so far is filled the tires and wiped them down with a baby wipe and some bike polish.
It really shocks me that we DO find such great stuff at the thrift stores. We don't live in a huge city, but it's big enough and very bike friendly with a great spring/summer bike market on CL. I think our city is just full of bike snobs that don't bother to look at the thrift stores and garage sales before they head to the Trek store for a brand new overpriced shiny new bike. It doesn't hurt that it's nearing winter and the bike market has nearly died, so nobody is really looking anymore. |

Not quite vintage but I think rigid Mtb's from the nineties are the best allround bikes you can buy for very little money. Passed by a fleamarket on my way home from a very dirty Mtb-ride and managed to ride two bikes home. Paid 35 $ for a 93 Trek 7000 in good condition.
