Don't look now, Sixty, but I think your bike has one of those horrible Japanese seat-tube monsters!

What's with the car batteries? Are you electro-plating the frame? Or are they part of your perimeter security system?

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...ubemonster.jpg :) It is a mighty cool seatpost (SR)... it has two outer bolts with smooth faces and the nuts sit in the centre and have to be tightened individually. |

I've still got one of the original touring frames Cannondale made. I stripped it of the Shimano 600 tricolor components. It's hanging in the local bike shop now; has been for about 5 years. The thing like to beat me to death. I rode it for a very long time when I was younger. Went on lots of century rides on it. But I can't bear to ride it anymore; it's just to rough. It was the bee's knees when I was a lad though! :>)

That seems to be their reputation (and that of most aluminum bikes minus a Vitus or ALAN). The seller said he didn't find it harsh, neither did another local who rode one for the 1st time. And his is the notorious 2.8. It could be that the roads out here in Phoenix, AZ are flat and very smooth. My middle-aged butt will find out soon.:D
My opinion as well; I had that same frame and it was like riding on cobblestones the entire time. But I think it was the design more than the frame material. I have a 1995 GT Edge Aluminum and it rides beautifully and light as a feather..... |

1997 Cannondale Super V1000. Upgraded rear shock to a Rock Shock SID. Bad news is the HeadShok is hurting and not part available. Going to try to make some time to pull it apart and see if it just needs Orings. I can do a Cannondale Discounted upgrade to a newer version that is far Superior to what I have but it will still be nearly 3 times what I paid for the bike. Then as I'm walking out I asked the shop guy if he had any taco'd wheels with Deore hubs, Hands me one out of his personal stash on the house. :) So now I have the parts to fix the other wheels. LOL May throw a more street friendly set of tires on those or upgrade my M400 to 8 speed and I can swap wheels and tires between the two. Got tinkering with the HeadShok and found that they thing was way out of adjustment. Played with it and get it where I think its right for my weight, Used a needle tip on my grease gun to lube everything and its acting a LOT better. Still not 100% but I'll live with it for a while. Here is a pic of the Super V. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...1&d=1319588529 |

Had a pretty good day as far as saving things from the dump ( or scrappers in this case) when a friend stopped by early yesterday morning and dropped off 2 bikes and a lawnmower that he found in the trash ( just as they were being put out with a free sign ). The first bike is a 1986 Mongoose FS-1 freestyle BMX ( Mongoose's First) which except for the rear tire is all original but needing a rebuild. The second bike is a Jamis Boss cruiser that is in horrible condition that was bought new at our shop and I actually worked on it this past spring installing a new BB & Shimano rear V brake.
The lawnmower turned out to be the best deal it is a 2001 Toro SR-21s Super Recycler Personal pace self propelled with optional bag & mulch plug that has low hrs as is evident by the paint still being under the deck, this mower was almost $500 without the bag & mulch plug when new. The mower needed the recoil repaired & a service, it started on the first pull and is now in excellent condition and I shouldn't have any problem getting $200 for it. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss001.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss002.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss003.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss009.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss012.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss011.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...misBoss010.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...roMower032.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...roMower035.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...roMower033.jpg |
I picked the wrong weekend to not hit garage sales around here... A friend of a coworker picked up a Cinelli Supercorsa(sp?) for FIFTY BUCKS!! I was sick for a few hours after hearing that. I will be out bright and early Saturday!,,,,BD

LBS had this on consignment. The woman who owned it had foot problems to begin with, then fell while riding on the trail. She landed with the crank arm pinning her ankle and had to wait for someone to come along. So no more riding for her.
I was looking for something for my 60 year old mother in law. I just will not tell her the bike bites. http://i931.photobucket.com/albums/a...11023-1629.jpg |
Glen, you scored with that Mongoose. True survivor. Should have no problem burning it on eBay if you wanted to. Easy $250 probably.

Found this old Gitane Interclub at the Dump the other day. I also found a nice set of Maillard hubs, laced to Rigida rims, sitting alongside the Gitane...

Are those tubulars on the Gitane? The "flat against the rim" tires are something I see daily on modern tubular rims, so I am assuming?,,,,BD

I hope it fits you and that you hang onto, it looks to be in very good shape. The stem on your bike is not original, the original for that model was a Nitto, those can still be found today brand new and would make the bike look original. Nitto makes a standard length Dynamic stem or if you want the stem up higher then the current one can go they make a Technomic. Here is a site with of all the Nitto stems: http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?...tem&FORM=HURE# |

Nice! I've never had that kind of luck, to get a set of vintage tubular rims on a bike. Even the bikes that came with them, always are refitted with clinchers.
On a side note: I am about to get a very close official weight on my Nishiki International. I weighed it the other day with stock 27" wheels, without cables or tires. 22 lbs 11 ounces!? I put on a set of Shimano 105 7 speed rims laced to Sun dark anodized flat profile rims. The tires are older folding Continentals. That will probably negate the no cables or tires weight, and leave it under 23 fully assembled. I am not a weight weenie, but this bike seems very light for the frame size. If I can get it under 23, I will feel satisfied, hehe. It messes with my coworkers heads, to have steel frame bikes be comparable in weight to modern aluminum models.:D |
This weekend started rather miserable with depressing news for the Mrs. and I after some doctors' visits Fri and Sat mornings. :-|
But my wife decided she needed to get out for some fresh air to clear her head. I get a call from her inquiring if a 'Specialized Rockhopper' is any good. Huh? Confused by her odd question I asked why? She was at Goodwill and spotted a better built bike and remembered Specialized was well, special. ;) Told her I'll be right over. Upon arriving, she had gotten herself a small 95 purple Rockhopper in decent shape, for $19.99, and a Graber and a Rhode Gear trunk rack both for $6.50! (I needed a replacement rack too.) She told me while waiting for me to arrive, another fellow came up to where she and the Rockhopper were and put his hand on the bike to take it. She told him, "Hey, it's my bike." He challenges with, "I don't see your name on it." She pulls out her claim invoice and points to the sticker with HER NAME on it. :D All he could say was, "Nice bike." The day started stressful, but undeterred, it ended with a score, a good laugh, and a spousal N+1. LOL! So, this is HER Catch of the Day. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6031/...63c92e48_b.jpg Not sure what is planned for it. It's light as heck for a steel frame, it's small and her size. The seat is newer and the tires are pavement friendly. I may keep this for her instead of flipping it. Only minus is the rubber dust boots for these particular Shimano brake levers are missing and the cable ends are exposed. I can't leave them that way, urks me too much. ;) |
Nice find, and glad the weekend improved for you guys. That does look very much like the recalled cranks though. They're thin and have the dogleg bend halfway down the length of them. Search Shimano recall cranks, and the part numbers should be on the site. Still a very cool find either way:D.
My vintage find this weekend isn't a bike, but no less cool. I only wish I still had the fork mounted Terry tennis racket holder. I walked iinto the thrift store, and spied a very nice laminated wood (perforated leather wrapped) racket handle. It was sticking out of a way more modern racket zipper case. I am not sure of the vintage, but it's a "made in USA" Bancroft Competition Model with a registration number and the whole deal. Bamboo and Ash wood. It's as pretty as a nice lugged road bike IMHO. It was 2 dollars and 13 cents, hehe. I've never played tennis a lot, but I may take it up. I have heard it really helps with flexibility and such;).,,,,BD |
I concur with Bikedued on the Rockhopper crank, better safe than sorry. Also, you might check the the stem and headset, if it's an "ultra" modle the diameter is bigger.
Sweet bike BTW! Cheers, Chris |
I acquired this slowly from my friend who tires quickly of his road bike finds and trades them to me. He pulled it apart and rode it for a few months as a flat bar single speed with some spinergies. He gave me the wheelset, stem, bars, and derailleurs a while ago but finallly gave up the frame. I threw it back together for some pictures. To the best of my sleuthing a '80-'82 PXN10. Not too much difference in those years but a few componentry items, none of which this bike meets completely. It came with unnamed Shimano derailleurs but seems to be pretty much orig otherwise. Perhaps a frame-up build in an American shop after importing the frame. Anyhooo...... to this date probably my sweetest acquisition that I paid nothing for... traded a '90ish Raleigh Technium which I was ready to get outta the garage. Woo hoo.

[Recall]
Thanks for the heads up Bikedued. I've gone through their recall with an Altus and Acera crank model. I'll check this Alivio out. Chris W.: It's the base Rockhopper not an Ultra. Wish it was then I would have the better brake levers and not Gripshifters. ;) But it does share the 1 1/8" headset and stem. |
