Do what you can to get the cruiser back to its owner, who's probably longing for it......

My friend stopped by with a little wedding gift... now my wife and I have matching green Raleigh 20 bicycles.

1989 19" Schwinn Traveler frame. Lots of paint chips but no real damage. True Temper Chrome-moly tubes. Japanese made, I believe. Good candidate for paint or powdercoat.

We all remember the sweetist ride and the one that got away. Until I was 24 I only wanted a Motobecane Grand Jubilee.
I scraped and saved and bought a Mercier with plastic Simplex derailleurs and loved it everyday until the crash into the MGB. It was 3 years before Lygie came into my life, rode it across country, raised my kids and tugged groceries until it was duty waiting yardsale and saved it with bilenky S&S couplers for a few years of sporadic adventures. As with other things that pass with time Lygie moved to a new owner, my son and spun a new current and vivd life across country. Good for Lygie, loving melancholy for me. Like youth I suppose but I am in search of a Lygie.

Before you sell the Irene bike, maybe you could try and find the original owner of the bike. I bet the girl who lost it may want it back.

Don't worry, I am trying to reunite the owner with their bike. I have two signs up in the area it was found stating "Bike found in river - Contact me to claim" - If they can correct ID where it was lost and what it looks like, I will be glad to return it. Also I am placing an Ad on CL saying "Lost bicycle found"

It would be cool for them to get it back, and in better condition then they had it. I cleaned all the little rust bits, scrubbed the white walls, put the reflectors back square, properly installed the rack again, and the whole bike was serviced. No a bad deal for them huh?

If I could ad a file I already uploaded again to the Attachments, I would show what it looks like after I was done with it but for some reason its not allowing me to drag and drop the previously uploaded file. I have a picture of it cleaned up.

cb400bill 09-04-11 06:29 PM

I suggest you pull your photos of Irene to lessen the chance that some joker doesn't spot them and use them to get the bike.

JT Burkard 09-04-11 09:15 PM

Only the real owner would know where it was left/found. This is the only place pictures were posted and I really doubt someone would try to scam from here, but you never know. Plus as I said, only the actual owner would know the exact location where it would have been found.

Not a bike but bike related, $30 bucks for all from the local CL. Now I can get rid of the old junky truing stand I've had for years :)

How would the original owner know where the exact location of where the bike was found...in a tree after it had gone who knows how far down a river after a hurricane? I don't think the owner knew it was there.

Even when I dig bikes out of the trash I put up a vague CL ad and run it for a month.

My last one was "Trek bike found. Call to identify."

I pretty much doubt the owner of that cruiser would be on here also so I'd probably post a CL ad that went something like this:

"Girls bike found. Call to identify" I wouldn't be too picky. If they got the color right and said something about the basket I'd probably let it go. Those bars and kickstand are pretty unique so I might probe for descriptions of those parts also.

Also unlikely that a BF regular would go out of their way to claim that bike but just to make sure I'd pull the pictures for now.

JT Burkard 09-05-11 06:39 AM

I can't really get into details but there is only one way this would have gotten in the location, and not from upstream.

Whew! I'm glad I did something similar for that Peugeot I found several posts ago.

I've been wondering if I did the right thing over the last couple of days; my town's wiki suggests running registrations with the police. However, I do live in a town with so many bikes it was a Jeopardy question but with bike theft so prevalent here I don't want to waste the police's time. Instead I left two craigslist ads and one post on the Stolen/Found section on the wiki, plus I'm thinking about making a sign for the lamp post near where I found it. This of course, assuming that nobody has taken it out of my 2nd floor patio!

Thoughts? I'm probably going to way too much trouble for a bike that's got a shot drivetrain, a bit of rust, 20-yr-old tires, and needs a complete overhaul/ss conversion. :D haha

Also, has anyone come back for their bike?

Thanks for the pic. That is a sweety. I've got a dahon single spd. folder I've dragged all over the world. I love that bike and still carry it in the trunk of my MB while I'm on the rode.I've had many a Lakeside or riverside evening rides that otherwise would have been missed without my folder.

Found on CL: vintage motobecane touring.......needs lubrication, new tires/tubes, damaged crankset.....$40

Seller is holding this for me until I can go pick it up. Trying to figure out how much I'd be spending to replace the crankset? New tires and tubes are no biggie, but not sure how to lube up the cables. I'm a newbie, and maybe it's a mistake to post on here but I gotta learn how to do this stuff from somewhere. Seller says crankset is froze. Help?

I would suggest pulling the link to the ad down(off of your post)

Also, you should go pick it up NOW, and ask the seller to pull the ad down.

Grabbed this off CL yesterday. As a farm boy who only drove green tractors, this one will be a fun winter restore effort and to keep around for fun. Nothing special as a bike, but I think it's pretty cool.

Old Bridgestone pulled from a dumpster

2 Attachment(s)
Walking home Friday night I saw that someone had tossed a bike on top of the dumpster outside my apartment. It's labeled as a Bridgestone "Shine Star." The frame looked straight and relatively clean so I brought it inside. I can't find any information about the model, except that it looks a lot like the C.Itoh ST-10 (which makes sense, as C.Itoh made bikes for Bridgestone in the '70s). The downtube decal says "Tested Finest Bicycle Precision Mechanism." Ha!

Components:
-Dia-Compe brakes and levers, with an interesting caliper mechanism I haven't seen before. Calipers are stamped "812"
-Suntour Spirt front derailleur
-Suntour Honor rear derailleur
-Suntour downtube-mounted shifters
-Bridgestone Oval crank set
-SR stem

I'm thinking of turning into a single-speed commuter, but I'd like to know a little more about it first. If you have any clues, please reply!

As I was on my way to the Bicycles for Humanity storage facility to ship 100 vintage bicycles to a fellow in Toronto...
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=217852

I scored this Specialized Crossroads at the Dump...
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=217851

The only thing wrong with the bike is a slow leak in the front tire. I pumped both tires up, checked to ensure all was tight and took the bike for a short spin before getting down to shipping.

Nice bike and it just might be my new winter beater.
