Headed up to Charlotte to pick up a Paramount Series 7 frameset (ebay buy). While there, I did a quick check of C/L, and came across a nice Batavus Professional. Components are mainly Campy, with a few Shimano bits snuck in (derailleurs and shifters). The Batavus sat on C/L for a couple of days.

Hey Bill,

Nice Batavus. Now you can join the Dutch Invasion thread. I picked up the same model last summer, although it looks like your frame and paint are in a little better condition. I'm on the verge of getting mine on the road.

Mine appears to be all original except the stem. What stem and bar are on yours?

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/...2/IMG_1835.jpg

1980 Miyata 912, black with gold trim. Even came with a matching Silca pump with Campangnolo Presta air chuck.
I647687 Serial Number, Tange Champion tubing, double butted, Tange headsetSR pedals, CyclePro Toe Clips, Lapaze Toe Straps

SR Sakae seat post, I can't figure out the saddle but it's pretty generic - what did these 912's come with?

This is what I can't figure out - it has a Shimano 600 Arabesque groupo but the front brakes are Campagnolo.

Which Campy brake is this? It's not Super Record, maybe Nuovo Record?
And the bar and stem are Cinelli. What are these Italian items doing on a Japanese bike?
The brake lever and hoods are Dia-Compe, and the front fork is chrome - that's not original is it?
Anyone have any idea what brand that would be? The front dropouts don't have eyelets for a rack.
Makes me wonder if the PO crashed the front end and had to replace everything up front?

I don't think aero brake levers came out until about the mid 80's so I'm thinking those are a retrofit.
Both hubs appear to be original Shimano, Wheels are 700c clinchers (can't figure out the brand, but
700c wasn't around in 1980 were they? I recall thin lightweight clinchers didn't come out until about
1984 or 85 so I'm thinking the wheels were built later.

The bike looks like it's got a fair amount of miles on it and the paint isn't in the best shape with lots of scratches,
and the saddle shows it's been down at least a couple times, but it's in fine shape mechanically and rides beautifully!
Looks like this is going to be my new go-to road bike! What a bargain!

Nice find trasher . . , but I wouldn't have paid more than $14 for it. I've been looking for a 912 in my size for a couple years.

My '81 Miyata Pro that I found a couple years ago had the same story, the whole front end was changed out with mostly Italian stuff. Maybe from crash repair, or maybe racers in the late '80's were trying to upgrade, who knows. Either way you got your self a nice bike.

Nice Rossin MTB there!!!! Definitely falls in the catagory of collectable mountain bikes. Heck of a deal at $25!

anixi 10-08-12 11:36 AM

^+100, those handlebars alone appear to be very collectible. Nice find, esp. a lugged MTB, good ones are becoming rare!

After a three day Thanksgiving weekend, in Thunder Bay, I headed out to the Dump on Tuesday morning, expecting to find a few bikes. Sadly, there were only two bikes dropped off on the weekend. A couple of broken toddler's bikes and this a Brodie "UniBomber...

No time to look the darn thing over with bikes to ship, derailleurs to repair, bikes to build and I do want to go for a rainy spin on my Gary Fisher "Hybrid" that came my way, once again, from the Dump, last week...

Nice brodie

I snagged this one..sort of...well, it was destined to be broken down for parts I think & I snagged it to break down for parts. It's a pretty cool 60 or 61cm touring frame that is too big for me so I would love it if someone could use it. I'm planning on using the fork, though..and all the other pieces. also. I think it's a Nashbar Mt/Toure or something like that.

I tried to offer $10 but she just wouldn't go down! But seriously, I almost passed on this bike because I just haven't ridden my road bikes for almost 20 years since I had kids, and with 3 boys the last thing my wife thinks we need in the house is another bike! But I took a second, closer look and realized how nice this bike is and that I would be a fool to pass it up for $15.00, especially since it's my size. I'm liking it better and better the more I ride and looking back I can't believe I had second thoughts. I'm really liking this frame - it's not quite as tight as my racing frame (which frankly is a bit too twitchy and uncomfortable for longer distances - even in my younger days) and it's tighter than my touring bike. My boys are teens or older now and I realize how much I miss riding a fast road bike!

So what's the difference in a 912 and a Miyata Pro? Is the frame tighter with better components?

vanvanj 10-11-12 09:30 PM

This baby was from last year, was garage sailing and saw this leaning against a tree in the front yard, didn't really know anything about Bob Jackson at the time but knew it had to be good with those lugs. I asked how much, he said $10, I said okay and took her home. He did say that he got it custom built for him back in the 80's. To date this was my best flip selling it for $500.

Vanvanj , that's a neat bike. I had to swap a Raleigh Sprite for mine ,and it had rust on the top tube . Great rider for a tallguybike .

Did a city-wide garagesale today. My regular cohort s out of town so my wife came along. She was ahead of me at a sale talking to a couple and waving me down to them. They had some antique furniture, but around back they had a pile of bikes. She had already talked the owner into showing me his collection inside. Ended up with his junk...

Large custom framed bike labeled "Ridge Rider". All Xt, bi-plane fork, old Paul thumbies style pods, campy headset, Phil wood rear hub...

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...ps51802eb0.jpg
and an almost complete Miyata 618GT

and she keeps telling me I've too many bikes...

goingsmoto 10-14-12 07:52 AM

I have been working at a motorcycle shop for a couple months now, I always notice an old bike sitting in our storage area. The other day I took it out and asked my owner if it was for sell, turns out it was and now it is mine. After some research I believe it is a 1981 Lotus Excelle. I plan on making it into a all around, touring, commuting, and going on local road rides.

That bike has a lot of potential and it looks like you don't need to do too much to get her up and running, maybe some new bar tape and tires. I think it would look great with some thin chrome fenders---is the seat post in backwards?

Yes.

goingsmoto 10-14-12 08:57 AM

Yea I am pretty excited about the bike, my boss is giving me some tires, a different seat and I bought some new bar tape. That photo is how it was when I found it. As of now I am just cleaning it up until I get some usable tires to go ride. I hope I can go on some long touring trips and use it as my main source of transportation as soon as possible.

Bikedued 10-14-12 09:39 AM

The Ridge Rider is beyond cool. Is it actually fillet brazed? I am jealous:D!,,,,BD

curbtender 10-14-12 10:19 AM

Already turned it to a MTB collector. It was lugged and fillet brazed. He said it was a Jeff Richmond with a Steve Potts stem. Guy was excited, his size.

I've never been able to resist a bargain and here are my favourites since 2011.

1. 94 Marin Team Issue. Saved from the dump. Hope discs & hubs, ceramic rims, Cook Bros cranks, XTR gears & Machine Tech levers. About to be rebuilt as a keeper.

2. 89 MS Racing ProCompXT. Another freebie being rebuilt.

3. 95? Marin Bear Valley. Cost $10 from Gumtree

4. Early 70s Raleigh Professional - for some reason rebadged as a Mercian. With early black Crane & Dura-Ace gears. $7 in a car boot sale.

5. 94 Univega Alpina for $30 on ebay. My favourite ride. Came as a rigid,I fitted the Pace suspension fork

My favourite bike ever was the 50s Rensch Champion du Monde which cost me $30 in 1970. Like a fool I sold it when I thought I'd given up cycling 30 years ago

Wow, all of your finds are great but these two really stand out. Are the photos you posted of the bikes as they sit now or have they already been re-furbed?

Gerryattrick 10-14-12 04:26 PM

Thanks Jet, the Marin is a winter project. I'll post some pics when it's finished.

I karma'd the Mercian/Raleigh frame to a chap on another bike forum as it was too big for me and he had renovated similar bikes. The gears, cranks and bars were sold separately on ebay to fund other builds. As usual I wish I'd kept the gears.

The only differences I'm aware of between a Pro and a 912 are the components, a slight step down here or there. Might be a different fork or something, but relatively little difference. The on-line Miyata catalogs spell out the differences pretty clearly.

Main reason I've been searching for a 912 is that I wanted an early 90's steel frame with 130 hub drop outs. Most of the time Miyatas are undervalued when you find them. I figured if I find a 912 in my area I could get it relatively cheaply. About a year ago one hit criagslist here for about $50, frame and fork. Nearly broke the phone trying to dial the number as fast as possible, but the frame was two sizes to big for me. The search goes on.

'84 Miyata Ridge Runner. Suntour Mountech derailleurs, Suntour Power Thumb shifters, bullmoose bars. Great condition. Well taken care of and stored indoors, maybe in a basement because tires are original without cracks, just a blown/threadbare sidewall. $8.

Cool, especially for $8.00! I remember those Ridge Runners when they started showing up in showrooms - the first generation of MTBs.
