I got a call last nite from a friend asking if I knew anyone who'd want this frame and fork. And finally one my size.

Driving home from Gramps house with the kids.. I see something out the corner of my eye. Bust a fast U and my kids are wondering whats going on. A Le Mans RS in a trash pile. Car full, trunk full. Pulled the wheels off and drove it 5mph back sticking out the trunk. Arayas need a true but *&%!.. new tubes and tires and I was riding. My size too. Never thought I'd find anything this good in the trash in LA.

I saved 3 wheels from the scappers at my local co-op....MA2 laced to 6402 tri-color hub and a nice pair of Shimano XT center-lock wheels. I don't know much about the XT wheels but they look pretty high end. All wheels are smooth and true. Sometimes I wonder about those guys, as one time I had to pull a PX-10 out of the bin and bring it back inside to tell them what it was.

I picked up the following today: Dura Ace 7410 front derailleur, Ofmega Professional rear derailleur, Suntour bar end shifters, Shimano 540 pedals and Shimano 737 pedals. Set me back $45 for all of it.

This Speedster came as a basket case. Work to worth ratio was way off, but it turned out nice...

1972 Schwinn Suburban 5 speed. This one was literally on it's way to the dump early this summer when "Mr. Haney" stopped by to see if I wanted it. Wish I had a before picture because I almost let it go it looked so bad, I thought the paint was gone and that it was all rusty. It sat until a couple weeks ago when I decided to wheel it out to the curb to put a "FREE" sign on it but I never made it. I stopped to hose it off to see if I could salvage anything, that's when I discovered it still had fairly decent paint. I cleaned off the grime, shined up the chrome, cleaned, greased and oiled the moving parts and put new rubber, brakes and cables on it. I put it on CL, there's a local Tweed Ride in a couple weeks, maybe someone will decide to enter at the last minute and needs a vintage ride.

That is nice and cleaned up very well. Join the Tweed Ride with a "For Sale" sign hanging from the top tube. I would bet you will get offers.

That Schwinn is pretty. I wish you had before pictures too, the paint looks pretty good.

My wife wants to check out the Tweed Ride so I may just take it along, it's too small for me but I can ride it. Yeah, I wish I had thought to take pictures of it before, it was N-A-S-T-Y looking! I honestly thought the frame was covered in surface rust, turns out it was just brown crud of some sort and the cables were solid rust. The tire beads had rotted away so the tires were rolled off the rims. I asked myself, "What the heck was I thinking?", every time I walked past it. Now I'm asking myself, "Why did I wait so long?" The lower fenders are pretty scratched up but they aren't bent, it still has the factory rear reflector on the fender. The saddle, grips and pedals are all original to the bike and the saddle has no rips, tears or scuffs. The saddle squeaks a little but it's actually quite comfortable on short rides.

My bike shop boss was well known for throwing bikes in the dumpster that belonged to customers!,,,,BD

With that said.....

I am receiving a free Peugeot from a woman on our Sunday bike ride. She needs a freewheel for her bike, and I just happen to have one in nice shape, so I offered a trade. All I know is that it's a road bike, and has DT shifters. With Peugeot, that's usually a pretty good sign. Got my fingers crossed that it might be a PX10 or Competition, maybe a PGN10 or PH501. I have to wait until next weekend to get it, but should be getting pictures sometime this evening.,,,,BD

Came complete, one box of small parts, two rusty wheels with cracked flat tires, rusty handlebar with grime encrusted grips, pair of almost grey fenders, rusty crank/pedals and a clean/waxed frame/fork. Isn't that how they all come?

Well got the pictures of the free (or almost free, hehe) Peugeot. I believe it is this model, a 1981 (or close) UO-10. Oddly though, it doesn't have Weinmann brakes. It has Mafac Racers. The Mafac racers, Maillard wheels, and Stronglight 104 cranks have me a little excited. The frame looks to be a little on the small side for me, but if it is the parts will definitely come in handy. The generator light set is a nice bonus, I will have to see which of my bikes deserves it most. :D.,,,,BD

AAnnndddd.......... it's gone! Sold it tonight to a young hockey player from the local Colonial League team and had a 2nd buyer waiting by the phone to snag it if the hockey player didn't take it. It was on Craigslist less than 48 hours. 45 minutes later my cousin stopped by, saw the '92 Bridgestone MB-6 I have and asked if it was for sale, which of course it was. He's having me change the bars and stem and put a suspension fork on it before he picks it up. Not a bad day on the bicycle front. :D

Buddy of mine found this at a local flea market, he passed on it and asked if I wanted it. Looks like I'll be getting a rough but original 1983 Trek 850 this weekend :).

I picked up this '88 Raleigh Technium Tri-Lite tonight for quite cheap. It is in pretty good shape. It will most likely go to my son's friend. Included is a picture from the ad.

mid-80's mystery mtb with roller cams
 

Found this frame in the metal recycling bin, built it up with used parts from the co-op, including roller-cams front and rear. It says 'Novara' on the downtube (REI house brand), and 'XC' on the top tube. Very long chainstays (I can even fit a bottle cage behind the seat tube), and slack, klunker-ish geometry. I sent this pic to REI to see if they could tell me anything about it, and they said they could not find anything like it in their old catalogs. Very comfortable, been commuting on it daily now for a few months.

Well, I picked up the Peugeot today. It's in pretty decent shape under all the grunge and garage dust. The wheels are true from what I can tell, and the freewheel spins and clicks nicely. Even the hubs turn pretty smooth. I'm going to clean it up as nice as I can, redo all the bearings and cables, then throw a set of Pasela's on it.

I was worried it was too small judging by head tube length, but I forgot they tended to leave a lot of clearance for the fenders and tires, and the head tubes look shorter because of this. It's a 60cm seat tube, with a matching top tube. Hopefully I won't have to change the stem, but it might work. Most of my bikes have a 58-59 top tube. So, now I have a decent condition Peugeot Course, and the bits that are missing shouldn't be too hard to find. Mostly Mafac brake levers. It has 7/8's Exage levers that look like road bike, but the levers look too straight. Some kind of weird hybrid lever I guess?,,,,BD
