While looking for a smaller frame to build for a brother-in-law I came across an old Raleigh. (auto salvage yard- $10)
Frame was my size so I picked it up of course. Searching the usual sites I think it's a '72 Raleigh (Nottingham badged) Gran Sport (frame- I think the original campy gear was swapped down-). That's based on the location of the SN, chromed forks (full chrome- painted over half way down- chrome rear stays-round. And one real puzzler is a "TT" marked on the underside of the bottom bracket. It is the original black and chrome, but I cant find any catalog pics to match it completely. Or any dates on components. Any suggestions?? |
SC or Grand sport?

What is throwing me is the fact the only graphics remaining are the two silver bands on the seat tube )which looks like the SC) but I've read that the serial numbers -numbers only, no letters- were only located on the dropouts on the grand sports. Can anyone confirm the serial number situation? ( sn 274900 )

Good saves guys! :)

1968-72 Raleigh Super Course, but I think closer to '72 - Nervex Professional lugs, chrome socks fore and aft with stamped dropouts, and a steel cottered crankset point that way. Reynolds 531 plain gauge main tubes with Raleigh 2030 forks and stays and a serious cult following. Try a 26.4 seatpost to confirm it ... Nice catch on a model that has a devoting fan base.
numbers only SN was (in only the earliest of '70s) was done on Grand sports, SC and I forget the third model. I've not found any '71 catalog or sales blurbs. Going through catalogs 69 thru 74, the color (black) doesn't show anywhere on either model and the forks are fully chromed but painted over down to the "socks" level! I did a test though. I swapped out the steel chainwheel for an alloy, threw on a pair of lighter (but still steel) wheels, an alloy seatpost and now the thing weighs 26 lbs. The listed weight for and only for the Grand sport. SC lists at 28 with the same equipment. I'm stuck at this point, but I'm going to upgrade build this keeper anyway. OH, and the Shimano 600EX -first gen 600- bottom bracket and crankset fit perfect. Which means it isn't a Nottingham OEM threading. |

These came out of a plastic tub just as I was talking to the mechanic. They don't use dated stuff so I threw them a fair offer, came home with me. Look to be mid- late 80's NCG 500 Dia Compe brake set. Pad are a write off but they were the nice Scott/ Mathauser ones. They will go very nicely with the matching levers I have been holding onto.

I picked this up the other day. I posted it in the CL thread. It was very dirty, and a bit rusty. It came with a Campagnolo 50th Anniversary group, sans pedals and freewheel (not cleaned yet). I spent the day cleaning it up,

Nice! Looks complete. Is it your size?
|
Would be a great pick up if it's your size! Looks pretty big.
|
On the very smallest end of big enough for me, 59cm ctc seat tube, 57cm ctc top tube. We'll see how well it fits when I get it ready to roll. It's not like I'm ever going to find another one, so I'll try pretty hard to make it work. It's going to be awhile though.

We're rooting for you!

Another too-cheap-to-not-buy Cannondale for me (but not my size): 1987 ST 500 w/the the goofy custom graphics. It's rare, so that means $$VALUABLE$$, yes? :P

+1 on the "b****in" sentiment, love the riveted badge on these and the seatposts. :thumb:

Yup. I'd never seen one before. It's missing its hi/lo adjuster mechanism (all the better to shift you into the spokes, my pretty...) and I'm pretty sure the cable clamp has been replaced, but it's rather... What's the word I'm looking for? Yeah... b****in' :)

Picked up a mate for my Peugeot UO8
https://i.imgur.com/wNWPrw9.jpg This will hopefully end up as my girlfriends commuting bike once I fix her up. Local co-op charged me $10 less member discount for it since the rear wheel was tacoed. I'll be starting work on it soon. |
I had determined I would stay at my current N status, but my sister had other ideas. She'd heard me say how much I liked the looks of the old rod brake bikes and look what she had waiting for me when I came to visit her in Georgia over the weekend. It's lovely, and I had a heck of a time taking it apart to jam into my little Piper to bring back to Memphis. It's a beauty. And it's a beast... I love my sister!

Yes, I use a little plane to scoot over to see family and friends every now and then when the weather permits. Beats driving, but the weather hasn't been kind lately so I've been driving a lot... |
Diamondback Ridge Runner

I have an affection to these bikes since it's the first MTB I ever rode. My friends dad had one and I had never seen a mountain bike before. I took a ride on it and had to have a mountain bike for myself. That was in about 1983 or 84. I did end up getting a Diamondback MTB, but it was an Ascent, not the top o' the line Ridge Runner. But still, it lit a flame for me and it's been burning ever since. Anyway, sorry for the long windedness.
Here is my latest find. A 1982 or 83 Ridge Runner, mostly original except the grips and tires. Even has the period correct Blackburn MTN Rack and Zefal Pump. I bought it from the original owner, right in my own town, and he even had the original owners manual for it. He had a lot of fond memories of the bike, which I'll be adding to, as it looks like this is a keeper. |
Awesome. Love old MTBs.

On my phone so I can't see it well, is that a Superbetech rear mech

This Raul Mesa showed up on the local CL. Pure race bikes aren't so much my thing these days but I couldn't pass this one up.
