Frequent reader, rare poster:
Had to comment, and say 'good on you', for the doing the elderly gentleman house & garage repairs.
That's a cloud of good karma, all (including me) can do with having a few more over our heads.

I did let go of most all the complete, lesser model bikes this morning. I made a deal with a guy who builds bikes for charity. I got some nicer bikes worth keeping, and he got a huge volume of bikes that will allow him to distribute more bikes over the next few months. Most weren't in that bad a shape but they were just cheaper bikes with no real value to anyone other than a person looking for cheap transportation.
Most of my end of the deal included older Raleigh three speeds and a few mid range road bikes. Either way, I'd rather store 25 better bikes that need some going through than 600 crap bikes that will just sit around and get rusty. It frees up both larger trailers and half of one room upstairs at work. I also let him have nearly all the Wald baskets that were in this lot which were taking up a ton of space.

Heck yeah, that's fantastic! Even if they are lower quality, to think about 600 bikes with baskets being given out to people who need transportation is pretty amazing. :thumb:

Sounds like you cut a deal that will help you reduce a decent chunk of the inventory you didn't care so much about.

My basic idea in the trade was to not let a bunch of still useable, or as least easily repairable borderline department store bikes just rust away under a tarp or such. I didn't have permanent storage where I could take my time to sell each one separate, nor did I have the interest in doing so for a bunch of bikes that wouldn't likely bring more than $20 each if priced to move quickly. I traded them for a handful of decent bikes I can fix and either use or sell for better money. Considering that most of the bikes go to kids, he was happier with a bunch of cheap ten speed road bikes vs. the small lot of English three speeds.

If this hub and rim information is detailed enough, I'd be interested in photocopies of it. In return I'd be willing to load it all in an Excel spreadsheet for sorting/sharing. It may be useful as another database for spoke length.

There's a lot of info in his note book but a lot of it is redundant in that most all of the 26" mtb or cruiser wheels all list 10 1/2" or 10 5/8" spokes, which is usually the case when building older wheels as well.
Most of the other info is just variations of old standard combinations. Most brand hubs share similar diameters and therefore end up taking the same spoke lengths.
There already is an excel spreadsheet program out there called Spocalc that does this.
If I get the time, I'll page through his notebook to see if there's anything I haven't seen before but most are variable combinations of various common hubs and very common rims. Most of the road rims he built were all the standards through the 70's. Weinmann concave, Rigida 1320, Araya 20mm, Ukai, Ridida steel, Araya 20mm Steel, and most of the Schwinn and Raleigh OEM rims. There are some rims he listed that are odd but the spoke lengths are common. Just a quick flip through the book in the beginning he listed over 30 wheels all built with New Departure Model D rear hubs and an equivalent of the Schwinn S-2 rim he lists as a Crown Replacement steel wheel in 26x2.125". Considering the 100 or so boxes of 10 5/8" vintage Torrington spokes I found, it looks like he built this combo quite often back then.

I found this frame in a swap meet in san diego.
I do not want to sell it, rather I want to trade for a smaller one of the same class

Trading 90's road bike frame and aero fork custom made Andy Gilmour size 59, not bent or hit, it has paint chips
It has dropouts, bottom bracket and fork Campagnolo chorus
Frame and fork steel is Columbus SLX

Trading for a same kind of frame size 53 or 54

You might want to add this to the "Frame Doesn't Fit" thread in the "Sticky" section near the top of the forum page.

Correct, it seem to fit in catch of the day but will follow your comment

Certainly fits both categories. :thumb: Pretty interesting trade bait for the frame swap subthread. I'm surprised there isn't a "Show Us Your Gilmour" thread yet. Someone with a complete bike should start one. Small volume builder, but all good work from the five or six I've seen posted here.

I've never seen a fork built quite that way; pretty cool.

Kinda looks like an inverted mutation of 3Rensho fork, definitely pretty cool. ;)

Just won this bike at a local auction for less then 50$. Dont know anything about it. Bugatti seems to be a small Danish bike brand now owned by unicykel. But i have never heard of it before.
Can anyone identify the crank ? Rear derailleur seems to be Spidel SX440 T and front derailleur Spidel/Simplex Super LJ.

The rings match the ones on a Solida crank I had on a early-80s Peugeot, but the crank itself is not similar.

Cool, Thanx! I think i figured it out, read about Spidel on velobase, "meta-brand created in the late 70's-early 80's by Stronglight, Simplex and a few other producers", googled on Stronglight and found Stronglight 190. Could it be Stronglight 190 with Solida rings ?

Got this today, it was tied to a tree with a "$5" sign on it about two miles from my house.
I couldn't pass it up, any single part on it is worth $5, let alone an immaculate pair of wheels. and tires.
The thing is a total hodge podge of misc parts but it rides fantastic.

Red Rollfast frame
Green Rollfast chainguard
Green Rollfast Fork
French handlebars
Araya rims
Bendix 70 coaster brake hub
Crown front hub.
Cornell 26x1 3/8" tires

The chrome on this thing is in amazing shape, the cranks and sprocket will shine up like new, as will the fenders. The rims look like new. Too bad the frame is brush painted and the cg and forks don't match. Its super comfortable to ride though.

Columbus Air fork crown. One of my favorites.

Where in NJ are you? I think either Second Life Bikes in Asbury or the Boys & Girls Club Bike Exchange in Trenton or Plainfield would help take all that stuff. Second Life started as "the Bike Church" and the shop funds kids learning to make repairs and fixing up a bike for themselves. I think the Boy & Girls Club is similar. I know Second Life Bikes will flip the low end stuff to hipsters.

Was disassembling the Yokota today and found these on the bike. And after a quick search, they are ODI Attacks designed by the legendary John Tomac. Nice freebie, IMO. Good thing I saw Tomac's name on them or I would have just put them back on the bike. This is going in my keeper pile or on one of my mtb's.

The mis-matched parts sort of look cool on that thing, I'd leave it the way it is. Sort of a red, white, and blue-ish type of theme. The Araya rims are an upgrade on that thing too, the originals were pretty low end stamped steel with cheap chrome, Araya chrome wheels usually had much nicer chrome.

Nishiki Sport mixte & a Schwinn

1 Attachment(s)
I replied to a CL ad yesterday for a free Nishiki Sport mixte. The seller told me to come today at noon and it would be mine. Before I could leave his home, he insisted I take a big-box Schwinn as well - so I got 2 bikes for free. He told me he bought a lot of 50 bikes at a police auction in Ocean City, MD and was only planning to keep the single speed cruisers. That explains the rust on the steel parts - the ocean air is not friendly to steel. The Schwinn MTB will be donated, so I am passing it on quickly. I was expecting the Nishiki to have either a stuck seatpost or stem, but both are free. The cables will need to be replaced. Other than that, I plan to service it and sell it in the spring.

I needed something to ride around with the family. Found this Mercier Kilo TT really cheap on Craigslist. Spent all morning trying to get it comfortable, and played around with it a little.

Picked this up mid-January. This was a ''learn-how-to-work-on-a-bike' project, and something for me to be a little creative on. I did not spend a lot of money on anything--and that was the goal going in.

I picked up this early '70s Fuji S10-S (Special Road Racer) about 45 minutes ago for $25 from an older gentleman that could no longer ride. It is nothing special but it is in great shape and has a Belt leather saddle in very good condition, Suntour barcons and an early Dura Ace crankset in perfect condition. The saddle, crankset and probably the barcons will be pulled before I sell it.
