Interesting stem and bar set up. With a kinda pricey headset.

I guess these are Multi pull brake levers with indexed shift levers. Not sure which model they might be.

Deore XT derailleurs and pretty nice wheels.

These are Deore LX hubs with 3x lacing on the back and radial on the front. Makes me think it never spent much time off road.
There is enough here to rebuild it, but I am not sure about what I would do with it. Lemme know what I should do with this mongrel. Smiles, MH

The V-brake levers are LX as well, the same model was sold for BMX as the DX and painted red/black.

Probably a GT avalanche or some other mid tier model. I had an avalanche at one point, but am not super good at GT models. People over at retrobike would likely figure it out pretty fast.

I’d put a rigid fork on it and clean up that cockpit with a Nitto albatross or choco bar. Or just part it out lol.

Organ donor? Those components looks like they are salvagable. Wheelset looks decent too. Any more pics of the entire bike? I see the telltale GT triple triangle...

For the Mongrel:

See if it has spark, empty the tank and add gas; oh, wrong thread.
Clean, lube and see if it can be resurrected without too much trouble and take it to your nearest coop. They always need these bikes.

I am, unfortunately, needing to move out of the acquisition phase of my life or I would be trying to find a vintage GT myself to restomod. I love the look of them. So it’s fun and a lot less expensive for me to say what I would do to this one if I were you. 😀

I’d try to figure out which model it is so I could buy or make replacement decals for it. Then I’d strip it and paint it a color I’ve been wishing I had on a bike. (Part of the fun of this for me is imagining a future owner thinking they have the year and model figured out but the color is all wrong.)

I’d try to clean, lube, polish and reuse the wheels, brakes, derailleurs, crankset, levers, shifters, cassette/freewheel, and pedals (if they are not gashed from crashes).

If the fork isn’t rebuildable, I’d try to find one that is at my local community bike shop or buy a new or used rebuildable replacement online. I could also see myself using a rigid fork if replacing and/or rebuilding the suspended one started looking like too big or expensive of a proposition.

I’d replace the things that rot or wear out: tires, tubes, chain, brake shoes, grips, cables, housings. I’d probably put on a set of Continental Double Fighters that I have hanging around.

I’d use a stem, modern MTB saddle, and wide-ish bar that make it a comfortable fit for me. (I’d probably try to make the slingshot stem I have in a bin work on it.)

I’m loving my—I mean your—new bike already! 😂

daywood ,
You just made a big mistake! This bicycle shaped object can be on it's way to you for all of those improvements, and saving me a bunch of work. Now I need to know where to send it...
It appears to be some variant of a Zaskar model and they came in bare aluminum frames.

Mid 80's Mongoose ATB

This was from the FREE pile of one of my neighbors on the block.

Chrome Mongoose "All Terrain" with SunTour XC thumbies (they seem to work fine). Looks mostly original with diacompe brakes and SunTour MounTech front derailleur. But you know that MounTech rear derailleur self-destructed within a few years. The replacement appears to be a Shimano Light Action Z-series derailleur, which is a very serviceable unit. Maybe I will replace it with a long cage AR or V-GT unit when I get a chance, in order to return it to its SunTour origins.

This one sat around for almost a week before I finally grabbed it. Definitely needs some work, and its not light. Off it goes to my garage attic to wait for its turn in the sun.

Picked up a cool little Nishiki Olympic 12 today. Dating it as a 1985 Canadian model (serial number CE11942). The Golden Arrow group and the front rack are what caught my eye. Way too small for me, but will be fun to clean up and tune.

Peugot of some kind that's been leaning against a sign post about a mile from my house for a few days. I passed on it the first day I saw it. Yesterday I said "why not?". Seems pretty low end, but maybe I can use some parts from it. The rear tire looks newer and in good shape actually.

Yep, we had em here too.

Trek got a lot of flack for leaning into law enforcement which of course was very lucrative, gov contracts, Ka Ching!

SoCaled 05-28-26 01:59 PM

Serotta made some bikes for the Saratoga Springs Police dept. (they got others from major companies, Specialized? can't remember) They also caught some flack for the co-lab. I also watched the Police "training" on there new bikes, by going down a set of 10-12 stairs, in the center town square. There were 3 or 4 brands of bikes being used, but it was the Serotta frame broke that into two pieces, when one of the 200+ lb policemen took it down the stairs, he got out of it clean but the look of surprise on his face was priceless.

Having Police officers on bikes is a good thing in my opinion.

My local bike shop has a few of these bikes as well. I didn't ask about them since they were busy. I've seen them listed on Auctions International.

delbiker1 05-28-26 03:00 PM

Bethany Beach sort of has bicycle cops during the summer season. They are all young, I believe college students that have interest in pursuing law enforcement. Maybe internships.
It's kind of funny watching them taking the on bike test, especially when they are attempting the slow speed turning without taking a foot off of a pedal. That is a requirement to pass. There are always a few that cannot do it. I think they give them a chance to practice for a second attemp. Also, every morning they do a ride around warm up that includes such maneuvers. I believe the bikes are now Specialized, used to be Treks.

Velo Mule 05-28-26 03:15 PM

Seth from Burm Peak had an episode where he videoed with the Bike Police in Boone, NC.

I ran the bicycle security division of a major security outfit many years ago, and did training with the local PD. Back then they were running Rocky Mountain.
