Old Spokes Home (help wanted)
Went to Burlington Vermont for the weekend. Great town for sailors and a great town for bikers. Bikes everywhere despite the cold.
If you're ever there you have to check out the Old Spokes Home.

The downstairs is a really good bike shop, full Brooks saddle display, hard to find tire sizes and great window displays;

Here's a closeup of that bike;

Sometimes you have to ask but sometimes they'll just offer. "Can I see the upstairs?"

Some of it's for sale;

That's a Supersport and a mixte that I threw in for Easthill (just say so when you get tired of the small mixte jokes)

WOW
What a place. I'd love to work in a place like that, just cleaning their old bikes. The bone shakers and that cool old wooden bike were amazing. Can you imagine getting into a little trouble in that town, just so you could pull some community service working there.
Thanks for the pics man, thats great.

+1 on WOW!!! I am truly impressed and would just love to be allowed to wander with intent of buying just one bike. Who knows what this version of Ali Baba's Cave would reveal.
While collecting bicycles for Bikes for Humanity one day, I entered just such a cave. This cave was an abandoned Cattle Milking Barn and filled with approximately 200 vintage Ten Speeds, roadsters and a few balloon tire bikes. Sadly, the damp environment had destroyed everything except an old Bianchi that still hangs in The Old Shed. I must get at it one of these days.

randyjawa: Nice timing for resurrecting this thread. I just gave 'em a rave-review on another thread dealing with things you never hear in a bike shop - or never expected to hear actually. If I wasn't bootin' it out of town/country shortly - I'd grab that HELP WANTED sign and say: "Hi! What you guys/gals need?" And I live about 5 minutes from them.
Definitely mark this shop, on North Winooski Street, on your plans should you ride into/through Burlington. Everyone who comes to Burlington says: "I want to move here!" Old Spokes Home is one very good reason for this.

I was lucky to visit Glenn Eames and the Old Spokes Home last summer. Glenn was too busy to ride with us, but he recommended a terrific route that involved two ferry rides to and from NYS. We were also very fortunate to get a tour of the shop before it opened on a Saturday and became extremely busy. Burlington is a very cool place.

My wife and I both worked pretty hard on getting a job up there. Other opportunities lead us elsewhere. We still visit about once a year.

Jobs are the real obstacle here. Unless you have vital employment at Big Blue (IBM), it can be pretty iffy. But we do have a saying: "Moonlight in Vermont. It's not just a romantic notion - it's an economic necessity."
