Campy Skewer I.D.

I found this skewer in a Maillard hub on a Nishiki International of all places. I searched velobase and I figured it may be early record or Gran sport. I figured I would post it here just to satisfy my curiosity.

BTW: this thing was completely covered in rust when I got it. I disassembled it and soaked it in plain old vinegar for about 2 days.

To me, it looks like the common, boom era, pre CPSC version. Am I missing something?

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

I'm gonna have to look through my pile-o-crap to see if I have a bronze acorn nut. That is what that is, right?

I did not intend to imply that this skewer is special in anyway, but since I have it I figured I would try and find out where it came from.

Yeah, the acorn nut is brass colored.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Are you talking about the acorn nut itself or the bushings on the D-ring? The acorn nuts were always chromed brass AFAIK. Older skewers had the brass bushings on the D-ring; newer ones use some generic grey pot-metal type or something.

My old Zeus skewers also have brass bushings on their D-rings.

In general it looks like a pre-CPSC skewer, as was mentioned by T-Mar.

Bikes: '93 Bridgestone RB-1, '91 Specialized Allez Epic, '85 Raleigh Team Pro, '78 Andre Bertin, early '90s F. Moser Leader AX , '85 Centurion Equipe, '98 Litespeed Tuscany, '89 Klein Quantum, '80 Nishiki Superbe, '83 Peckham, '84 Fuji Opus III

I've always assumed that the brass coloring was just a result of the loss of chrome. I've seen a number of
nuts showing partial brass.

^This skewer was in very bad shape when I got it, maybe at one point it was chrome.

When was the CPSC formed.... late 70's?

That's what I was think too. I've seen lots in that state.

Well, Campagnolo implemented changes to comply with the CPSC in 1978, but their proposed changes for bicycles go back several years prior to that. I first recall seeing them circa 1973/1974. Some brands jumped on some of the changes right away, while others held out as long as they could. I believe the CPSC itself actually goes back to 1972.
