Ciocc Frame ID Questions

I came across this Ciocc frame for sale. The placement of decals seems very strange when compared to any other Ciocc I have seen. There are no tubing stickers. There is a strange Designer 84 decal down near the bottom of the seat tube. I have only seen Ciocc model decals near the front of the top tube. The fork crown is plain which also seems unusual to me. Except for the seat stays, there are no embossings anywhere, not in the lugs, on the bottom bracket, or on the fork crown. Is this just a repaint with random decal placement? Is the fork a replacement? Is this a replica frame? The owner knows nothing about it, got it as partial payment for a small construction job and now he's selling it to get some money. Any comments/opinions? Thanks!

Not a Ciocc expert, by any stretch, but I have ridden them, and like them a lot.

Looks like a repaint, probably SL tubing (an inspection up the BB would confirm). I think the cheaper frame sets had a crimped chainstay? I don't think the fork is an original Ciocc, I'll let others decide what it is, pulling it may tell.

I wouldn't go overboard on it, but I'm a sucker for Italian steel, and if the price was right (Cheap), I'd give it a whirl if the size was right.

That being said, the presumably non-original fork is a turn off, so cheap woould be the operable word.

Ciöccs typically have pantographed fork crowns, no? Is that what you mean by plain: no pantografitti? It looks like a quality fork nonetheless. Clearly, the frame is Ciöcc, unless someone has forged the seatstay caps and pantographing there.

I agree: looks like a repaint with a replacement fork. Worst case is it could be an Aelle frame, probably rides great anyway, if it is Aelle. It it's straight, and fits, go for it.

Yeah I saw that one too but not my size. I like that pearl color, very different though I too wonder if it is original.

I tried to buy a hot pink 80's SLX Ciocc frame/fork in 56cm listed in Buffalo CL this weekend but it sold in a matter of hours. Not surprising given the price of $80!

Ha! Did you buy it? C'mon man, you can't keep ALL the best vintage Ciocc's to yourself now can you?

Seriously, congrats if you did.

Just out of curiosity, what was he asking for it? Looks like the next size up for my daughter....

He's asking $350. He knows nothing about bikes, got the bike as a partial payment on a small construction job. When I passed on the frame, I sent him an email detailing some of the authentication issues with the bike and suggested he should be willing to take less than that. I would imagine he would sell for $250 or so. I think he has a fair amount of interest locally in the frame.

That's funny...... at the beginning of the thread, I was trying to guess-timate what the frame would be "worth", and came up with ~$200. I agree with you - $350 is too high for that frame, but like you I'm also pretty confident it'll go at or about $250. Someone will take a flier at that price, especially if it presents well in person.

well, given the HS, stem and bars it's better than just a F&F...but $350 is just too much for an unknown tubeset and non-Ciocc fork, even in SF.

That's what I was thinking. A dual-groove set of Cinelli 64's with a 1A headset might set you back at least $60-$80, and that headset is worth something too.

Are we sure that's not the right fork? Just asking - every Ciocc I've seen has had a chromed one, but I haven't seen too many.

BBM, The bars are single grooved, not double, and the fork, though chrome, does not appear to be Ciocc fork, no engraving on it, and wrong cutout on it

Ahh, so. I see that now.

In that case, it is a worthless piece of crap.

On further inspection of the fork pictured, it looks odd. Like maybe someone stripped the paint off of a fork that was painted but had the chome ends exposed. It might just be the light, bu I think I can see a "cut-off" line where the chrome down by the dropouts is a bit shinier.

That frame, orginal paint and stickers or not, is beautiful.

Since there seem to be a few Ciocc experts on this thread I am interested in getting any info that I can about Ciocc's mid 90's Mini Max Frame. Specifically, I came across one for sale, but I know nothing about Mini Max, where it sits in the columbus lineup, and what type of ride I should expect from a Ciocc made of this tubing.

* I like em' stiff and heavy is not an issue.

There's a very slim chance that it's a budget model Ciocc that wasn't imported (much) and that might explain a different fork and some of the other oddities: like the chrome on just the RH chainstay and the lack of pantographing on anything but the staycaps, and the cable guides. But I think it's more likely choices made for the repaint and a replacement fork (tho likely an Italian one).
