The Trimbles built some of the earliest successful composite bicycle frames. Their work included E-stay and 'beam' style mountain frames, aerodynamic road/TT frames, and a number of highly original fittings and accessories for race use. They were, by anyone's account, a significant influence on the development of composite bicycle frames.

The aero road frames were better-known than the mountain frames at the time, probably because they were more visible in the racing world. At the time, the Trimble aero frames were possibly the most aerodynamic frames in existence. The only other nominee was the reknowned Hooker Elite. For Time-trial, Tri, or an ultramarathon event like the RAAM, a Trimble or a Hooker was a major advantage over a more conventional frame.

This one is frame #39(see pic), built 3/9/89 in Massachusetts. It's probably (almost certainly) been raced. It is in decent cosmetic shape, and excellent structural shape, without a crack or separation that I can find. The rear triangle is spaced 124mm, appropriate for 5s, or Ultra-6. You will not be able to spread the rear triangle for a modern 130mm wheel and I would recomment you not try. It's an old-school warhorse. The little compartment was for food, or a bottle, or what-have-you.
It's wearing an appropriate Kinesis aluminum fork, a Stronglight Delta headset, Dura-Ace 7400 bottom bracket, and an appropriate DA seatpost (shortened, but not by me). There is a forgettable Profile steel stem, a single Simplex friction shifter (RH), and wheels.

The wheels are a very nice, very light set of racing tubulars from the 80's. They're American Classic hubs, laced into Sun Mistral Aero tubular rims. They're built 2x, 24h, Wheelsmith 14g front and rear, with alloy nips. The rims have absolutely no brake pad wear on them. I've no idea if they were used on the track, or for raging the coffee shop, but the anodizing is perfect on both rims. The tires, alas, are a write-off due to age. The hubs have the proper American Classic skewers, also in excellent shape.
The wheels were not built for this frame, and the rear hub will need to be slightly respaced in order for the spokes to clear the left side of the frame. The hub needs to be shifted a few mm to the drive side. Not at all difficult, but requires an axle cap that American Classic still sells. Last I looked, it retailed for ~15$. A decent wheelbuilder can do this in less than half an hour. If you would like, I can contact AC and get the part number that you will need.

Overall, you could either restore this as a classic TT/Tri/Ultra frame from the 80's or build it into a very unusual vintage road bike.
