Schwinn Voyageur - what year/info?

hey all,

I came across this on CL and looks like it would make a quality project for spring/summer. Can anyone tell me more about it? The decals are pretty worn off. According to the seller it's a mix of Cyclone and Shimano 600, and is asking $180. What can you guys tell me about this bike, and would it be worth the asking price?

What you appear to be looking at is the World Voyageur, which was Schwinn's first imported lightweight 10 speed, and is probably worth every penny of $180. The chrome lugs are the giveaway. It was only sold in 1973 (I think) and was nearly the best bike in their line-up--- just short of the Paramounts. The FD and the RD appear to be replacements, but the rest looks to be stock.

Here is the cut and paste description from Bob Hufford's notebook.

https://www.velobration.com/sldataboo...7074.html#1973

10 speed. Built for Schwinn by Panasonic. 4130 chrome-moly steel frame tubing. Chrome plated head lugs, fork crown and front and rear fork ends. Schwinn Approved (Sun Tour power rachet) fingertip shifters. Diacompe center-pull brakes with dual-position quick release levers. Quick-release high flange aluminum hubs (Shimano) and alloy rims. Shimano "Dura-Ace" three piece cotterless aluminum crank set. Steel rattrap KKT pedals. Shimano "Crane GS" (sometimes known as a Schwinn-Approved GT-300 Le Tour) wide range derailleur and "Titlist" front changer. Seamless, leather covered nylon saddle (Unica-Nitor) -- sometimes Brooks B-15 leather saddle. SR two-bolt seat post. Diacompe stem, unmarked randonneur bars. Tange headset. Schwinn Approved "Le Tour" high-pressure tires. Round "World" head badge. Colors were Opaque Blue, Kool Orange, and Kool Lemon. Frame sizes 21", 23". Net weight 27.5 lbs (21"), 28 lbs (23"). Shipping weight 38 lbs. and 39 lbs. $275.00.

This one's red...?

But thanks a bunch for the info, pastorbob.

If anyone is looking for a Kool Lemon in 21", a seller local to me had one available a few days ago. She was looking to get $200 for it, but she could probably be talked down. The bike has definitely been used, and I think the stem/bars have been modified, but it's in pretty good shape. Also has some Campy SL pedals to sweeten the deal.

Are we sure that is a World Voyageur? I thought those were in the 72/73 model year, and didn't come in red. My World Voyageur also has "WORLD VOYAGEUR" In huge lettering on the downtube.

I maybe wrong also but that RD doesn't appear to be a Shimano Crane.

I think many of the original components have been replaced.

I agree with Pastor Bob that the chrome plated head lugs, fork crown, and F/R fork ends tend to indicate it's a '73 World Voyaguer. The red paint and remnant of a late seventies/early eighties down tube decal are puzzling, but could have been done by an owner.

What does the head badge look like? The '73 World Voyageur head badge didn't say "Schwinn" on it. Instead, it had a red map of the western hemisphere with the word "WORLD" across it.

In mid year 1974 Schwinn brought the World Voyageur "in house" so to speak and called it the Schwinn Voyageur II. It came in red. I'll bet that is what this is.

My eye doctor says I suffer from "color confusion." To me the OP's bike and the page Stan posted look to be the same color. I'd call it orange and not red, but my eyes can't be trusted.

They look the same to me, too, Bob.

OTOH, Eric may be right about it being a '74 Voyageur II.

So if it is a '74 Voyageur II, is it still worth $180 and are we pretty sure that hte decal job is an owner-done thing?

The crank of the OPs bike looks more like the one in the 73 that the one in the 74 bike. Component dating might be in order here

Yes; whichever it is, IMHO the double-butted 4130 frame and the chrome make it worth $180. Re the decals (or what's left of them), all I can say is they don't appear to be original to the frame.

Looking through my literature, I see I have the specs for the '73 World Voyageur, so maybe they would help with component identification and dating.

This is interesting, because in this picture the '73 crank, looks like the '74 (drilled rings), unlike the OP's bike and the picture on the '74 brochure...

File under 'beating a dead horse'

For some reason I was thinking this bike could also have been the other chrome lugged Schwinn: a 77 Volare. Again, in this case the red paint would have been no mystery:

I was wondering the same thing, but I see that the Volare has a different fork crown.
Also the bike in question looked like it had the remnants of a "Schwinn" name decal on the downtube. The Volare has the small "Schwinn" decals on the top tube and the larger "Volare" decals on the downtube.
