TA Triples?

Where can I find a bunch of late-'90s TA crankset info? Mrs. Road Fan now has a great Terry Classic with a TA Triple. As far as I can tell based on the Peter White site it's either a Zephyr or a Carmina, but it's not clearly either one. It's certainly not a Pro Vis or other Cyclotourist derivative, totally different design.

Reason is I'm trying to get the right BB for it. Someone put on one that is too long and it just ain't right.

Thanks for those links, but those are not about the more Sugino-looking cranks I'm asking about. Per Peter White's site, there are several models that are not well-differentiated: Alize, Zephyr, and Carmina. My crank is similar to a Zephyr and to a Carmina. Not sure if it looks like an Alize.

Anyone know of a shop that sells these items?

What size spindle is on there now, and is it too far out or not far enough out? I would think it would be fairly easy to extrapolate what size would be ideal just going off her current setup.

Hi, John, it's really very confused. Some TAs took Campy/ISO spindles and some took JIS, so that's one source of a poor fit, especially since the change was within the Carmina series. One side seems to be not on the spindle all the way and the drive side seems to ahve the granny ring too close to the chainstay. Good think she's not heavy and strong, or she'd have sawed a hole in the chainstay by now. So I'm trying to actually identify what I have and go from there, if I can. If not, maybe some experimentation is in order.

I guess my first order of business is to see if my Campy extractor fits, because TA seems to have changed that at some point as well. If it threads correctly, I can at least pull off the crank arms and do some tests to see if they are ISO spindle ends or not.

As far as I know the Carmina has a removable spider, if yours does not it is not the Carmina. The Zephyr was a solid forged crank and spider available as a 110 triple or 110 compact (Zephyr light).

I think only the BCD differentiates Alize and Zephyr, being 130 and 110, respectively, for the main rings.

The Carmina basically replaced these two cranks with one set of arms that would take any spider. I have a set in 185 which I purchased in 2005 and waited a couple months for it to come from france, I use it with a phil wood titanium magnum BB in 103mm JIS. It has a triple spider but I have only ever used it as a compact double. The shifting aids on the large ring are inferior to most other manufacturers today, but they quality of production is exceptional.

Ok, I took off the crank fixing bolts last night, and the spindle ends are about 5 mm shy of the bolt head seat in the crank arm - same situation with both of them. According to Sheldon Brown's "Bottom Bracket Taper" article, that's what will happen if you install an ISO crank on a JIS spindle. So I want to find an ISO BB that will get the correct chainline (seat tube is 28.6 mm, and it's a triple, so 45 mm to the middle ring). I also found that my Campy crank extractor will fit the extractor threads on this crankset.

My crank looks like that one. I definitely don't have a removable spider. The crank arms are polished on the back as well as on the front, and there is a "D3 in a square" on the non-drive-side and a "D1 in a square" on the drive side. The bolt to bolt chord measures about 76 mm, so it's a 130/74 BCD. That makes it an Alize?

What BB did you use for the crank you pictured, assuming it's yours?

Thanks, I think that shows I have an Alize, at least I think so.
