My "new" Trek 620

Hi, all! I usually post over in the Clydesdale forum, but I'd like to check in over here about a "new" bike I picked up today: a 1983 (?) Trek 620 that has been re-muddled (like "re-modeled", only messily) along the way.

The saddle is at least close to what the original saddle would have looked like, but I know that the handlebars are Just Not The Right Thing for this bike.

Wheels say "Ambrosio 19", and have 700x28 Michelin tires on them.

Three rings up front, 6 in the back; judging by the rear dérailleur things were updated in the 90s?

I'm planning on using this for century rides and light touring.

Comments (and, of course, compliments) invited.

Bikes: Two wheeled ones

I think another person on this forum might enjoy this bike as well.

It's a small world after all...

Yeah, come to think of it, you might be right!

(For those who don't understand why we're laughing -- KonAaron sold it to me!)

Welcome to the C&V bunch. Several of us have the same bike, including me. Enjoy riding yours.
Mine started life as a 600, was "smurfed" by a previous owner - I repainted and re-replaced all the components with what you see in this pic.
It's now undergoing conversion to be more like a 620 tourer, with a triple front crank, bar-ends, Japanese components, and the addition of fenders.

Well, the system's not letting me add an image. Here's a link. (Edit: Link seems to be working now)

Cool bike- with the baby blue offsetting the pewter.

Does the XCE stuff index with your shifters?

As near as I can tell, the thumb shifters on the bike are pure friction. Moving to indexed shifting is on my list of upgrades -- after I figure out what kind of handlebars and shifters I want.

Nice bike! That decal kit and paint scheme is definitely Trek's best (IMO of course).

I think they are actually index, though rudimentary indexed. Try turning the center dial.

Give that bike a chance.
It will ride like a big old Caddy, and you will like it.

The shifters (I think will work).

Plus it is one of Treks best paint jobs.

enjoy the new bike!

And yes there are more than a few of us who really do like that frame.

That rear dr will index nicely, I had one on my univega, with indexed DT shifters, and switched to bar end index, it's a dream.

Update!

Spring is here, and the Trek is on the road!

I did some of the updates I had planned over the winter:
  • Grey bottle cage instead of white
  • Kept the Biopace gears, but now have 28-38-50 instead of 28-36-48
  • Shimano A530 Pedals
  • Grip shifters (I know some people hate them, but I really like them)
  • Scott AT-3 handlebars
  • Fizik light blue bar wrap, to match the blue accent on the frame as well as I can, with blue heat-shrink on the ends
  • Brooks saddle -- I actually had a B67 around the house; will be moving to a B68 (no springs)
  • Nitto stem to hold the new handlebars
  • Nitto seatpost -- I need to keep the seat low enough that the flutes on the old one turned into "rain gutters" leading water inside the seat tube

My other bike is a Cannondale Adventure 400, a front-suspension SUV of a hybrid. I know that the Trek 620 isn't a "light" bike by current standards, but it's so much lighter than what I'm used to.

those scott bars look a bit silly (no offense), but they are sure are comfortable and well designed. i've got a pair of the at-2s and at-3s.

None taken. I felt a lot better about making the change when I saw that the bike was coming to me with flat bars. If I had taken off drop bars to put on something so un-period... and I'm one of those folks who has never been comfortable with drop bars.
