But now that the call is out for RSVPs, I'll have to get off the pot and give my regrets this year. It's just too close to our departure for Europe to make it work.

All of you who are thinking of it, do it! It's a great ride, in and of itself.... And even without that wonderful dinner at the Mineral Point Fire Dept., find some way to hang out Friday night and Saturday afternoon with fellow forumites. Stay up late (for cyclists at least.) You can sleep when you're dead.
You really rode a great 200 last year, our average distance will be much lower without you around. Have fun on your trip.

I'll send the deposit for the banquet room. Seems like a good opportunity to eat, get up and move around, let the kids run, the whole deal. Maybe the ghost will join us.

Hi Mike,

I need to warn you concerning the modern bike curse at the Dairyland Dare. Last year, I was the only person associated with this thread with a newer bike. I had completed the Dairyland Dare several times over the last 8 years, and never had a mechanical issue.

However, I became the victim of the newer-bike curse last year. My aftermarket bottom bracket failed during the first 30 minutes of the event. I limped along for more than 50 miles. At one of the rest stops, a mechanic looked at it and told me that it was unrepairable and that I was risking frame damage if I tried to continue. That ended my event. I was the only member of this group to have a terminal mechanical issue.

So be warned, newer bikes might fall under the C&V curse ;-)

Sincerely,

Michael

Hi Robbie,

Mark me down for this. Should we start a ritual to ward off mechanical problems?

After having both knees scoped over the years and in the last year of my '50's decade - I'll be a spinnin' up the hills. It will either be a C'dale ST400 28/42/52 with a 14/30 6spd or my Trek Elance with 30/42/52 and a 12/25 9spd.

Any idea on the time of the banquet? I'd like to make it but not sure if I'll arrive in time.

Since the Bianchi is too unreliable and my other on-topic bikes are not geared for hills and I am too lazy to change them, i will probably go off-topic with a 2009 Cinelli XCR, 50/34 rings (although I may challenge myself by staying out of the small ring) and a 12-27 11-speed.

Man, that's nice.... I can't even count to 11! Do you need a calculator to ride a bike with that many gears...

Yes. It involves 3 margaritas, spinning once and then sitting down.
Works every time.

Since it's at the Walker House, I imagine restaurant hours, but I'll find out.

Somehow a modern Cinelli with Campy will fit right in and will be exempt from the curse. Having tan-wall tires helps, too.

I was using a BB30 adapter on the bike so that I could a Shimano Crankset. I replaced the failed KCNC adapter with a Wheels MFG adapter and haven't had any problems since.

Yah, Wisconsin folks think Campy means tents and sleeping bags....

Anybody on this thread using Garmin Connect?

Oh man.

Lifting the curse will doom me to the curse. I might as well just write I won't get a flat.

We just established another justification for N+1: Avoiding the curse.

I tried N+1 yesterday, but had to walk away. Front end damage too evident on a 3Rensho that was just my size. I held back tears, but my lip was quivering. SN A16-560 RIP...

Good luck with the negotiations. I have found that bugging the crap out of her works too. I pick up my +1 today! It only took 2 weeks of nagging!

I thought about you and E_Merlin, when I was offered a mint Lotus Classique. Beautiful bike, fantastic frameset, 54cm. I passed, but it's in my mind. Nicest 27" wheels I've seen, appeared to be 7/8" wide, black rims, machined sides. Makes my Semi Pro look "pedestrian."

Yes, it was. The rear triangle will be the model for the custom, it was really special. Unfortunately the slightly bent fork and missing paint just past the front lugs was a show stopper.
