I'm quite jaded to the process as I had mostly built up a good stash of NOS parts when I really first got into C&V. But the drama of mounting an NOS part to a bike only lasts a few seconds........ But once it's "de-virginized" the real fun of using it can begin!
Now that I'm quite over it, I don't mind buying "lightly" used and "servicable" parts and components to save a lot of bucks!
I still envy people that are able to find awesome things like this early Campy brakeset (with fresh looking brake lever hoods too!), but I don't mind not having to go though the hesitation to put them on project bikes too....

That looks nice, and I'm not a Bianchi fan, but I'd own that.

Beautiful Bianchi, BlueDevil! I suppose that helps ease the pain of the other Super Leggera you recently sold (and you probably have some extra cash to boot). In fact, I think the chrome head lugs on the new acquisitions makes it even more attractive than the one you sold.

Nice Croll, too, Grady!

Yes it does ease the pain I had my eye on this one before I decided to sell the other one. The Super Leggera with the chrome head lugs (78-81) is the one that I have always really wanted. I am a sucker for chrome head lugs. This one is not as pristine as the '83 but that is fine as it will give me some work to do.

Nice Croll, too, Grady!

Thank you sir.

Built as an "every road" bicycle, but its likely best suited to this sports tourer assignment.

Needs a little more tire and she'll be ready to roll.

To Ely, from St Paul? Not exactly a little ride if that's the case... I seem to remember that being something like a 5 hour drive last time I did it...

This frame arrived Saturday, from devinfan. Such a cool dude, he made my grail bike a reality! I am building it up to ride first, and little by little I will be acquiring the obligatory Campy bits, which will be followed by a full on repaint, new decals, and a clearcoat. I will probably get a local frame builder Koh Annoura, to fill in the few little dings with brazing material. For now, Crane GS RD, Arabesque 600 calipers with Dia Compe levers, Dura Ace Cranks, Shimano 3.3.3. bar ends. Pretty much a hodge podge Frankensteinish example. I have my grail bike, even though I have to wait a while for full realization of the image in my head. I am good at waiting though. It took me 4-5 years to get my Grand Record built up.,,,,BD

Correct!

I can do it in less than four though, but who's counting.

I am doing the first leg to Duluth, then the Croll is getting handed off to a family friend that lives there.

They'll take over from there, as I can't get that kind of time off once school starts.

BTW, to clarify a bit Mike, I didn't buy these for a build. As Chombi has suggested, nice used ones would be good for that and I have other sets available for that, if need be. I bought these just because I like them. While it might rub some sensibilities the wrong way, I have a small collection of NOS Record parts in my display case. I like them just for what they are, whether I decide to use them , or not.

Shimano Deore LX FD and RD and an 8 speed 11/28 cassette.

That's for The Ultimate century Machine: Deore FD/RD, Sugino 46/36/26, '85 Ironman, Velocity A23's, Vittoria 32 Rando's, 11/32 cassette. Next year I'm gonna do me some HILLY centuries! Or maybe that crazy Eroica event out in Montana.

The 8 speed cassette is for an interesting project, using a modern 130OLD wheelset with 6 speed DA by making a 6 speed HG cassette and adding a 4mm spacer behind it. Think...Faema.

Stay tuned!

Just make VERY sure the derailleur stops are right, ripping the RD off is never fun. Been there done that, but always seemed to get the wheel stopped in time, and it happened on the stand, so not much force behind it.,,,,BD

Wahoo - They arrived!!!

Finally - I can complete my '83 Colnago Mexico tribute to Beppe Saronni. No, not the frame - it's a Mexico but not the same frame Saronni rode in the '83 Giro - I'm talking about the components. Campy 50th, Concor, 3TTT, etc, etc.

The only component(s) I didn't have was a set of Colnago branded toe clips - until today.

I was using an article I constantly go back and read as my guide. The article was found in the Aussie 'RIDE' magazine - Summer 2005, Issue 27, Page 82. All I have to do is drop this issue of the magazine on the table and it automatically opens to the 'SARONNI'S COLNAGO' article. The article was written by Warren Meade and the photography was by Yuzuru Sunada.

Fitted:

Saronni used replacement track pedals in lieu of the 50th gruppo pedals. I used Ti spindled track pedals. i don't know if his were Ti spindled though? I did replace the campy plastic dust caps with an MBK alloy pair of dust caps - I like them. Saronni had a set of Ciclolinea, chrome finish, toe strap buttons. I couldn't see if his buttons had any logo or colour scheme on the top face so I chose to use a pair with the World Championship 'rainbow' to honour Beppe and his 'World's' win in '82. Same Alfredo Binda straps as Saronni used too.

Finally finished - oh - he did use a Yellow bidon in a blue leather pouch. Perhaps I'm not quite finished.

I think I've got 'the sickness' bad.

Looks beautiful Gary! Campy 50th anniversary builds are special but yours takes it to an even higher level with the Sarroni theme. The bike looks like it was pulled straight out of those magazine period pics of the champion and his special bike!
Congratulations on finally getting that last component to complete it!
