Bikes: blue ones.

had some rijstevlaai today, a local specialty - pie stuffed with a kind of sweet rice filling, a bit like rice porridge. Very good riding food.

I havent contributed to this thread before, but I've watched a lot of good looking food pass through it.

I have nothing fancy to ad, but here is tonight's dinner. Cheeseburger with bacon and a fried egg on top. I forgot to get buns at the store, so toast suffices for now.

Toasted sandwich bread is better than any un-toasted bun in my book. And fried egg makes something good better. Looks great, Roger.

Bikes: I hate bikes!

Toast is a burger/cheeseburger secret weapon.

Sweet. Rice. Pie. What's not to like? Looks awesome.

Speaking of toast, a leftover meatloaf on toast sandwich could easliy be my last meal. Anyone else use the trick my mom does with meatloaf? A couple of peeled hard boiled eggs in the center; cuts down cooking time, keeping the meat moist, and tastes great. Highly recommended!

also, I'm just starting to get the feeling back in my face after today's lunch. Spicy Thia Basil Chicken.

Yesterday I made baked ziti with spinach (penne actually). Today I had leftovers and roasted some carrots and parsnips to go with it. I'm still cooking 2-3 times per week and eating leftovers in my off days. As an added bonus, i've lost 11lbs in the past month without exercise.

Mkeller, you've gone from dishwasher to sous chef in a very short time, congratulations on your new lifestyle.

Everyone should take a bit more time to grow, harvest, fish, hunt and cook their own food. The rewards are often beyond description.

Thank you clubman. I'm really trying! My family and all of you have been the inspiration that I needed. I compare it to working on bicycles: Even a small amount of effort and understanding can take you pretty far. We don't all have to build wheels.

I would like to try growing some of my own herbs this year. I was thinking that I might be able to do something indoors? Our house is for sale, so i'll wait until we move to attempt any vegetables.

Try growing in some shallow pots, on or near a windowsill. Chives, basil, oregano, most herbs grow easily in a small area. I'm starting eggplants right now, to be transplanted to the garden when it warms up. There are also patio tomatoes that grow in bigger containers.

Mmm, that soup looks good. Yesterday, I rediscovered one of the local Asian restaurants near me. They have specials and yesterday was half teriyaki chicken & half sweet & sour chicken, (each of which is close to a full serving if ordered as a single entree) and brown rice is $1.00 extra. I got 2 1/2 meals out of it, lunch and dinner yesterday, plus a light lunch today. It's a good thing I love that stuff, or I'd probably get tired of it.

Last Saturday I rode a 200 km, had a ham/cheese omelet at around 160 km a restaurant. I needed the energy because of the very strong headwind.

American-style lunch in Madrid this weekend. Best burger I've had in quite a while. The (runny) egg pictured on the menu outside was what made me double back and order it.

Since we're posting eggs:

Eggs on toast tuned with some blue cheese instead of butter and fresh herbs. This wins.

Simplest and most delicious recipe I tried in a while from some Italian that learned Jamie "overenthousiastic" Oliver how to cook: Get some chicken, put some butter in a large pan, brown a little, then add a bottle of wine, some spices and veggies - simmer until nearly all the wine is gone. The drink another bottle and enjoy.

For desert some pastry with gold leaf on top. Everybody needs a plutocratic moment every once in a while.

That chicken and pastry looks really good. What is the pastry?. I'd probably stick someone in the eye to get that burger.

I've still been cooking weekly. The pictures aren't pretty, but here are three other things that i've tried recently:

Baked mac and cheese with broccoli for dinner:

Black bean salad with tortilla chips for lunch:

Thanks! pastry is chocolate mousse, with raspberry jelly. And nice pasta!

nutella mug cake
Also, I tried my had at making a mug cake - I was really sceptical at first when I saw the recipe at Buzzfeed. The basic idea is: stir some stuff in a mug, microwave for 3 mins. and whoohoo, cake! It sounded way too good to be true.

I had to prepare the recipe in a bowl instead of a mug, since Euro mugs are probably a little smaller than those in the land of the Big Gulp.
Batter

And lo behold, it works! the batter was cooked through and the cake was really nice and fluffy. The only problem was that the recipe called for vegetable oil, and I used a little sunflower oil which left a nasty mark on the otherwise great taste. I'm amazed. https://www.babble.com/best-recipes/nutella-mug-cake/
