Adding a bottle cage (without braze ons)

So far I am completely infatuated with my Colnago but the single bottle braze ons has me nervous for longer summer rides. I've got a Tommasini for many of these longer rides but due to sentimental value, there are some places and conditions I would rather not subject it to.

Anyway, I briefly debated clamps but it seemed wrong to do this on the Joe Bell paint:

The solution I decided to try is a simple Minoura abh-80. It is a simple steel bracket designed to hold a single cage.

My initial reaction is that it won't work with every post/saddle combo, but otherwise seems like a reasonable option. I may not keep it on the bike, but it quickly installs with two bolts if i need to throw in on for a century or multi day (supported) ride. At $7 it only needs to save me from dehydration once.

A lot sexier.

I like your solution, and I've contemplated getting one of those too. The handlebar mounts don't work for me on most bikes.

Hey I never said they were wrong! I just like the under saddle look better. I think I may not be retro enough for the handle bar mount

I like the look on vintage racers, but it just plain won't work on this build. Functionally, I use that area and aesthetically I don't think it will mix well with the modern parts.

Well the ass rocket mount makes ya look faster and seems appropriate for the style of the bike.

I like the vintage Coloral handlebar mounts that hold the bottle back a few degrees , the Velo mount shows the bottle verticle and very high which looks, well city bikeish BUT.....if you mounted the cage very low on the bracket and angled it back a bit instead of being verticle, I think it would cool and not be in your way

A third option might be to clamp mount the 2nd bottle carrier to the underside of the downtube just below the existing mount. You'd have to switch the bottles once the top bottle was empty....which is always a good excuse to stop at the crest of a long climb anyway.

I have that same Minoura mount on my Pogliaghi track bike and it works great!

Good to hear. Did it fit ok on yours? It is very close to not working with the slr. The bottle just touches the saddle.

Incase you get really thirsty you could get one of those Minoura or Profile design dual bottle cages. Minoura just makes the dual cage mount while Profile makes that dual cage monstrosity. I think by law your actually required to wear an TT helmet with it.

I think the minoura mount looks great on the OP's bike. I wouldn't change a thing.

Bikes: old ones

........mostly because I carry my spare tubes, tire levers, keys, etc in a seat wedge back there.
It's not ideal, but it won't scratch the paint (so far, anyway) and it is pretty flexible in terms of placement location.

Whenever i have had a bike that had nice paint and I wanted to clamp something to it, I've used
rubber strips cut from tubes under the metal clamps with pretty good results.........

Get the Bell at Walmart. Swallow your pride.
Wait for someone to make a snide remark about it being on a Colnago.

Bikes: Two wheeled ones

For aesthetics...what thirdgen did looks AMAZING...but I think I'd probably use handlebar mounted so I could grab the bottle without stopping. Love the paint too...Colnagos don't usually do much for me, but this one is pretty hawt.

I use the TwoFish mounts. They make one with an integrated cage and one that you can mount your own cages to. The rubber is supple and provides a secure base. I replace the silly Velcro with zip ties.

I have one of the Minoura mounts as well, but I didn't care for the location and it didn't seem very secure on my Brooks Professional (it actually fell off on one occasion).

I'm just the opposite from Aaron.

I don't want bottles on a modern racing bicycle on the bars.

I recently ordered a Garmin 810 and have twin headlights I will switch from bike to bike.

That's enough stuff in the cockpit, plus I find it pretty intuitive to reach behind for a bottle.

Fwiw I ordered one of these Casey for my El Mariachi.
