Scored a Nice Little Masi

I was really hoping this one was my size when I answered the ad, but it's much too small (I ride a 54). Still, it was a good enough deal that I couldn't pass it up.

Serial number: MM50 0056

Size 50. ~48.5 ST, 51.5 TT

From my initial research (2 minutes on google),it appears this is likely an 80's model made in San Marcos, CA; but I would like to confirm that. I haven't researched the components yet, but it looks like Chorus with Record hubs to me. Shifters are 8s index and actually work surprisingly well...I have heard horror stories about early Campy indexing, but maybe that was 7s. Either way, shifts as nicely / nicer than any 8s Shimano index bikes I have had. Quick and precise with a solid click into gear. The rims are not an exact match, but are close enough for me. The stem is a Ritchey and is nice...but a traditional Cinelli would look much more at home here (and it would match the giro bars).

Condition is very good, some paint chips primarily on the top tube and drive side chain stay. Chrome and paint/panto are all in great shape otherwise and it will polish up very nicely. There is some dried on mud on the bottom of the down tube that doesn't appear to want to come off easily, I will need to look into a way to remove it without scratching the paint. I am thinking I will wrap it in a wet towel for an hour or so and hope that loosens it up...

Anyway, here are some indoor teaser shots after a quick wipe down.

Bikes: Two wheeled ones

You've heard horror stories about Synchros (and it's true), they got it very right with ergo.

Gorgeous bike! I love the monoplanars and seatpost. Resell or hold out for an eventual ragamuffin?

Bikes: blue ones.

Ah, the archetypal "spousal bike" with low miles, wide fluffy saddle and a high rise stem .

Beautiful frame and components though, enjoy!

very nice bike with great parts, I like the monoplanar brakes.
The hubs are Chorus, not record. These generation shifters are very good (with the right rear dérailleur).

I agree - the seatpost and brakes are my favorite part of the group and might stay with me...

I really do not know what my plans are for the bike. It doesn't fit me and the Mrs. has already said she doesn't want it, so it will pass on to somebody else in some way, shape or form. I am not sure I am up for the challenge, but I think the frameset would probaly do well on ebay with international shipping (think: Japan). I belive this frame is a little too recent to be considered a real collectible, so I am not sure what the value might be. I will likely post a thread in the appraisals section to continue that discussion.

My thoughts exactly! The saddle is even a Terry brand... The gentleman I bought it from had purchased it from a friend at some point with the intention of giving it to his stepson. He spent a bunch of money this summer getting it tuned up, new tires, bar tape, cables, etc. only for his stepson to decide he wanted a touring bike instead (he sounded less than thrilled telling me this).

Thanks for the info. I thought the metal clip over the oil port meant that the hubs were Record, but I will be honest I haven't ever focused too much attention on this era of Campy.

Very nice.I'm intrigued by the Campy 8sp DT shifters. Are they the same index/ratio as Ergos? I'd love to find a pair to put on bar-end pods.

these DT's look rather like the 10sp TT bar ends. Maybe the only difference is the ratchet inside. you can probably mount the 8 speed units on 10 speed pods.

The ugly rubber sleeves come off easily and reveal practically the same DT shifters as shown on the OP's bike.

They have the same ratio as 8 speed ergopower, I replaced the same DT shifters with Ergopower.

I suppose they would also bolt right onto Shimano bar-end pods too.

I'm not too sure; Paul Thumbies for instance require different mounts for shimano and Campagnolo. Somebody else can probably fill in my speculation with facts.

BTW, see the excellent tears for gears blog for an indepth look at Syncro in all its guises, including the later TT version, showing that the 10 sp TT shifters are indeed Syncro's with a 10 sp collar inside.
