I was riding across campus this evening and saw a purple Specialized road bike blur past me. I followed him to the gym, and looked at it, that's why I knew it was a specialized.

Bikes: To many to list...
There ar some great bikes in this thread. I think this would be nice to have, but the price is too much for me and besides I don't need another bike.

My 1984 Yoshi Konno Allez, I found the frame at my LBS for $60. The bike now has a nice pair of Superleggari SL Pedals and a SR front derailleur.

Outsourcing, wild paint jobs, and their road line being the lesser emphasized offerings from their dealers is why I think they are more of a niche thing on the boards. Comparatively, Trek had a much longer steel history, and not outsourced.

shoota, you're right: https://mombat.org/Specialized_Specs.htm
Based on the u-brake and the color scheme, it must be an 88, not an 89. This was just a lucky CL find. I wasn't even looking for a bike, it popped up on CL, and I couldn't help myself, lol.

Here's the down tube in the 1988 catalogue scan

You're probably on to something here. It just makes them more unique I suppose. Give it another ten-twenty years and I'll bet people will be looking for these more. They're just now coming into the c&v realm.

Here's a thread from my friend and neighbor, (whom I haven't seen for awhile, on here or in the flesh) on his Yoshi Konno built Specialized Allez. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-bike-acquired
Check the head tube lugs on the red Allez/Rensho and the blue 3Rensho. <Pointy>
Then there's my red Allez as found. Just a plain Jane type. The Suntour GPX stuff works great. I don't know the year, must be almost '90 with the unicrown fork. Someone put Sante brake levers on it. Not sure why but I won't complain.

Have a look at How I Found The Specialized and your question will be answered. Did I steal it? No, it was stolen, then made legit and then given to me. One of the many really unusual ways that I have found bikes, over the years.

Bikes: 1978 Trek TX700; 1978/79 Trek 736; 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport; 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP; 1985 Trek 620; 1985 Trek 720; 1986 Trek 400 Elance; 1987 Schwinn High Sierra; 1990 Miyata 1000LT

It's my first C&V "score" even though it's in kind of rough shape. I got it from the original owner who gave me a copy of the original sales receipt.
When I first got this, I kept seeing a tricked out Long Haul Trucker that had the same color paint (kind of a 1984 Jeep Cherokee color, right?) and I've wanted to put drops on it- but it has the bull moose bars- and they're pretty cool. I just run out of hand positions before 8 miles. I've played with the idea of putting bar ends- and how sacrilegious that would be on those bars...

Mine is an 84 Stumpjumper Sport.

My first "real" road bike was a 1988 Sirrus; paid $499 for it that summer. I kept it around for years after building up a De Rosa and even had it re-finished in 2002. Then I started acquiring too many bikes and sold it in 2006.

I was wondering about the relationship of the Sequoia to the Expedition. I kind of thought they were the same frame but outfitted differently- it looks like they were entirely different bikes- and although the Expedition seems like it's the "farther up the food chain" bike as a true tourer- it appears to be under the Sequioa as a sport/tourer.
I was also under the impression that the Stumpjumper and Stumpjumper Sport were also the same frame... again, I was wrong.

Figure around $3000 now.

Very nice bikes posted here! Specialized really pulled out all the stops for those Allez models!
My Specialized bikes need some attention to get them into good working order but I am miles away from them presently so they have to wait.
Here is my '81 Specialized Sequoia:
[/URL]
I have been looking for the correct front wheel which is a Mavic E2 rim on a Specialized Hub for some time now, so if anybody have one to spare please let me know. What is in there now is a 27" Schwinn-approved wheel with one broken spoke. That is how I got the bike. There are other things to do but that is the more important item to get for the bike first.
When this '85 Stumpjumper appeared on eBay, I got attracted to it because the paint scheme and logos looked exactly like that of my earlier acquired Sequoia. When I first saw the bike in person, my first thought was that this bike would be perfect for Zombie apocalypse if that ever occurs.
It looked and felt heavy duty compared to the more lightly built Sequoia road bike. There really is more steel in this bike. The chain stays ovalized profile looked like a horizontal fork.
The 19 & 1/2" size is just right for me for city/commuter duty as this allows me upright riding without changing the original stem and handle bar.

Maybe most people just look at Specialized as a sort of a giant "bike stuff" conglomerate, so focus on ther bikes is a bit "blurred" with C&Vers. This is further muddled up by the fact that they contracted out the building of their bikes as others here mentioned.
I betcha if they just sold bikes and not tires, helmets, clothing, components and other accessories. People will see them more as a "bicycle maker" and their bikes will get more attention from the C&V community. Nearest thing I could compare to Specialized was "PBS" and their outsourced bikes in the 80's and 90's......Not too many look for those bikes from that company these days although I think most of them were admittedly quite good quality.....

I think they dropped the "Shop" from their name, long ago already....
I used to order a lot of my cycling "goodies" from them during the pre-internet days....

Some previous posts pointed out that Specialized is a relatively new company, I think that's spot on as they were not around in a big way in the 70's. As for the "outsourcing" thing, I doubt that has anything to do with their not being big in C&V. If we took that to heart we'd have to stop collecting most late model Schwinns, ALL Centurions, most 80's Raleighs, all entry level Nishikis, you can add others to the list. Also, just because they outsourced doesn't mean they didn't design. In fact Specialized was and always has been a leader in MTB design. Move into the 90's and Specialized also designed some of their road bikes. From the pics here, I would expect Specialized to become part of the next wave of C&V bikes. Vintage Stumpjumpers already command more than double the amount some of their counterparts do. It took me around 5 years to find an older Stumpy for $100 or less, and even then I had to settle for an aluminum frame. Like'em or hate'em Specialized is about to become a player in the C&V world.

I figured maybe it was cuz they litigated any remaining vintage road bikes out of existance...
