I agree.

To each his own for sure.

But I appreciate both. I have bikes in both plain vanilla colors, like a white Miyata, and a silver Colnago, along with wilder paint jobs like my Barecci and a 2 tone Basso, so I can make room for both styles...

Curly Lugs and a retched repaint drew me to this Carlton Flyer

I was just thinking about this last night. I don't have a huge lug fascination. I think I have more appreciation that it was a more "hands on" approach to the building of a fine machine. I outlined the lugs on one of my bikes- but more as a way to break up the solid color.

I think it's gorgeous - also the Hetchins. (Ephgrave lugs were hand cut, not pressed by the way).

The COLNAGO in the OP as well as the other examples shared are art. And maybe the of highest level of art as some of these works are also technically fine machines as well as artful creations. I can't help but wonder at these machines. Their beauty isn't contemporary.... and it isn't timeless ether. Those bicycles represent tends and the fashion (albeit cycling fashion) of their day.

I think to fully appreciate these bicycle beauties would require a greater cycling education than I have achieved. But I know they are beautiful.

No problem Aaron. If you Google Ken Janes - Lug Cutter, there's quite a lot of info on how it's done.

The company website has a virtual bike builder that is good for wasting an afternoon.

I got my hands on one 26 years ago and haven't let go. Here's some "before" glamour shots of my '87 Merican Pro with ornate lugs. Full set from my 2007 rebuild is at https://www.flickr.com/photos/ascher...7603037063948/

Thanks, Velognome! My mac doesn't play well with the WYSIWYG editor on the forums. I can usually get the image editor popup opened to set the size to full, but not today.

I love lugged stems with a passion. If only more of those pretty French stems had been better cast.

Here are the HT and seat lugs, and the nearby brazed-on stainless snowflakes that Glenn Erickson did at my wife's request for her custom:

Bikes: Colnago (82, 85, 89, 90, 91, 96, 03), 85 Cinelli, 90 Rossin, 83 Alan, 82 Bianchi, 78 Fountain, 2 x Pinarello, Malvern Star (37), Hillman (70's), 80's Beretto Lo-Pro Track, 80's Kenevans Lo-Pro, Columbus Max (95), DeGrandi (80's) Track.

I must admit to being a sucker for fancy lugwork, to me it suggests a builder's pride in his work. I'd also 'kill' for a Colnago Arabesque. I couldn't open the attachment to see your actual bike though.

I like the "less is more" school of lugwork on my Chris Kvales.

+1 - it stands for itself without being garish. I especially love the seatlug.

I am gaa-gaa for Kvale's work, and gomango is both very fortunate and unforgivably selfish to have two. :^]

"Less is more" encapsulates it perfectly. You could almost overlook the handwork, but the lugs are so perfectly thinned, and the lines so fluid, that your eyes and brain are magnetically pulled in and engaged. His frames are instantly recognizable without decals, and you won't see his name or initials or any other clue engraved or stamped into seatstay plugs or lugs. The whole thing is him.

I can't recall ever seeing a fillet-brazed Kvale. I wonder if he ever did one, and what it would look like.
