Wheel compatibility

I'm restoring a Quick Run (Dutch) bike from the late fifties. The front wheel (chrome plated) was very bad, so I wanted to replace the wheel. It was a 36 hole, 26 x 1 3/8 inch rim. I couldn't find such a rime locally, but I did find a 32 hole entire wheel of the proper size. It has an English style hub (fixed and adjustable hub, both with a shoulder. The shoulder does not fit into the dropout. Does this matter? By the way, I do have the fixed hub on the right side of the fork.
