Cable crimps! "We don't need no stinkin' cable crimps". Use your wife's nail polish on the ends, that's what banditos do.

Well, I just came in from securing stuff outside ready for the arrival of the residue of Hurricane Rachel. I put a whole load of garden furniture indoors in my bike cave (detached brick built garage) and knocked over one of the plastic storage boxes I store parts in.

A dozen or so Specialities TA alloy chain rings slid out onto the floor, still in their cardboard sleeves, wide variation in sizes. These were inherited from a friend who had been a life - long serious touring cyclist and I'd forgotten about them. My initial excitement was short-lived as on closer examination they all have SIX bolt holes! All of my cranks have spiders with three, four or five mounting bolts.

Anyone have any idea what kind of cranks I'll need to find to make use of these rings ????

It works for a while alone, longer if you super glue it first. I use it a lot until I decide on the stem/handlebar/brake/shifter combination I'm going to use. The plus side is that it is so easy to remove - if you need to do that.

They fit the three-bolt cranks, most probably. That's where I've seen them.

I've got Free Spirit and Masa 12 frames that I should make use of, but right now my garage is too cold to do it properly. I am thinking that the Masa 12 is my next weird build. As far as i know there is no history on this bike so I can make it up as I go along. How about "First department store disk brake bike to win the Tour de Fromage and the Tour de Pur in the same year".

Well it's what I've got.

I still can't believe that PBS actually charges customers for those teensy weenie metal crimp on cable caps...... Something like 25 cents each....Blehhh!.....
Heck, my favorite LBS hands me handfulls of spare nipples and sometimes even spare spokes gratis, almost every time I build a wheel and buy the materials from them.....

Drop handlebars, brake levers, & stems!!!!!!!!!!

I convert old 10 speeds to upright handlebars. So, I've got around 1/2 dozen or so drop bars with turkey levers hanging from the ceiling right now. I guess I'll wait till the scrap price for aluminum goes up. Or, make a weird ass wind chime.

BUT THERE'S MORE......... ! I usually take the pedals off these old bikes & put nice new MKS rat traps on. So, I got a big box of weird old pedals. Plus, nasty old seats. Lots of old wheels. Can't bring myself to throw it all in the trash. Got to get rid of this stuff. Do you think the local bike cooperative would want this stuff?

At least I am not alone with a department store bike. I used a JC Penny frame that looks like one of the Huffy Aerowind bikes with a flattened down tube. It didn't have any Aerowind components, just typical cheap stuff. The Huffy "one frame for everything" approach meant that I could use whatever size wheels I had on hand, as long as I had a matching set of brakes. I put mountain bike wheels on to start, but the chain line isn't very good, so I might have to try something with a narrower hub.

4 days left - reach into your parts bin and let your imagination take over! See that sad, neglected frame in the corner? It wants to be a bicycle again! Mix Campagnolo and Shimano, Suntour and Huret up in a blender and have at it.

Mine is coming together. Sneak peek:

Old bike mechanics never die. They just disappear under their piles of spare parts.
