Finished it up last night. I want to put some kind of labels on the hastily painted frame, but I haven't come up with anything yet.

All of my bikes are "parts bin" bikes. (See sig.) What, you think I have all this just so I can run my hands through piles of stuff?

The Schwinn Superior resto-mod will get hubs, cranks, shifters, and derailleurs from the bin. Mostly Shimano 600 and Ultegra stuff.

The cabinets are full of parts, got plenty of wheelsets, probably 8 complete groupsets that are ready to go. All that is missing is a frame to build up.

Thanks devinfan for getting creative and starting a great thread, I'm really forward to seeing what others' creativity yields in this challenge!

I don't have a spare mountain bike frame sitting around right now, I'm not going to break the rules and go out and buy one. That would be silly but I did come up with a nice little collection of parts (IMHO) for the next trail bike that catches my fancy.

Thanks again, cool thread idea!

Man that is a pretty cool stash! You could build a bike around those cranks alone! Go ahead and find a frame, I think that's fair because you only have a day to do it. Let the frame sit in your basement for half an hour and that makes it part of your parts bin. We have similar taste in stems, salsa's are my new favourite. The good thing about your parts is that they're all vintage custom upgrades so they'd look perfect on almost any high end frame.

So here's what I pulled from my parts bins:

A late 60's Carlton Catalina frame with original HS, stem, bars, and brake levers
new wrap of cloth tape
Raleigh-branded Weinmann Centerpulls
A well worn Wrights W3N saddle
70's vintage Shimano drivetrain - '333' Shifters, Dura Ace crankset, Titlist/Crane derailers
Wheelset of Sun CR18 rims and Shimano '333' hubs
A previously used pair of Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tires
SRAM chain, Sunrace freewheel
Pedals are Electra Ticino half-platform/SPD

Better pictures later after I take this bike out for a decent ride.

Amazing job on a beautiful frame, lasauge!!! I love the copper colour. Very cool how the tires match the hoods on a parts-bin bike! That saddle also looks like it is original to the frame. Awesome.

1simplexnut that turned out great. Is this the one that was painted black, or is that a carbonio. Either way it looks amazing.

I could help you out with that, but it wouldn't look or weigh anything like the bikes in your list.

Thanks devinfan for the kind words, I appreciate that! I really did try today but the only goodies popping on Craigslist were too far away and everything local was way overpriced. My parts stash will rest at the top of the bin and wait for an affordably priced Zaskar or other gem to fall in my lap.

Thank you again for a fun thread, I'm really looking forward to seeing the completed builds!

Cheers,

Happy Sunday all, hopefully the day will bring some secret builds that people have been working on! Here is my completed parts bin monster, with parts from every continent and era. Behold the Guerciotti mash-up:

18 lb of lugged aluminum fun. The only part I probably shouldn't have used is the front tire, it is my spare tubular that's been riding around under the saddle of various bikes for years, but it still holds air and survived my test ride! Thanks to everyone who's contributed so far!

I didn't have a nice frame to hang stuff on, but I had a rusty old JC Penny ten-speed frame. Since I had stripped everything off anyway, I brushed on a coat of paint to make it look better. Being a parts bin bike, I had to use what I had, so it is flat black. The seat post is frozen in place, luckily the former owner was my size. I wanted to use 700c or 27 inch wheels, but I didn't have brakes with the correct reach, so I used some MTB wheels that I got at a yard sale last year. The original chain wheel was pretty bent, so I used a single chainwheel from a 3 speed bike. The chain line is too wide of a range, so I had to adjust the derailleur high limit to stay away from the 2 smallest cogs. The derailleur, cassette, shift lever, and brakes are all parts that I picked up at bargain bin prices over the years with no specific bike in mind. Cables are used ones stripped from other bikes. The stem came out of a box of stuff I got at an estate sale for a former bike shop owner. I haven't taken it out for a test ride due to recovering from surgery, but it looks like it will be a good neighborhood bike.

Pompiere this is awesome, it reminds me of a Mad Max after the apocalypse bike. Good luck with your recovery. When you're feeling better you should hook up a flamethrower to the front of this bad boy.

Thanks MetinUz, both for the info and the link! Those TA Pro-Vis/Cyclotourist cranks look the business, but possibly pricey? I'll be looking out for a pair in 170mm. Meanwhile, I may try matching up some odd 3-arm cranks in my pile as per the excellent photo posted by Non-fixie. Either way, the range of chain ring sizes gives a lot of scope.

So, it's looking like ALANs tend to be parts bin bikes.....
I guess I have to agree....

My 86 ALAN Carbonio Italo/Franco/Suisse parts stash "salad"....
All the parts and components were collected before the frame came up. I found bought them one by one within a year's duration not knowing they were all going to end up together on an ALAN Carbonio frameset.....
Only thing changed and added to the shown parts bin smorgasboard was the saddle and the seapost for the final build.

Combined i think you're disqualified because that bike is too nice. Also I don't know if that artful display of parts qualifies in any way as a bin.
