Decals for 1978 Gerber

I have a Gerber cyclocross bike from about 1978 that is in need of a new coat of paint. The decal on the head tube is quite detailed and interesting, but part of it is missing. The photo attached shows the decal I am referring to - this one is not from my bike.

I have not been able to find a replacement from the online providers I know of (cyclomondo) and the cost of having a new one drawn up by the frame painter is about $600 - which is not much less than I paid for the whole bike.

Does anyone have ideas on where I might be able to source a decal, a good photo of one, or even a drawing of one? I have contacted the store in Switzerland that sold the bike, and also been in touch with the Swiss Sports Museum with no luck so far. I have found that the shield part in the middle is the Gerber family crest. But the rest I can't find at this stage.

It's not a common bike, so I'm not expecting success, but any light anybody can shed would be greatly appreciated.

Good looking bike. From the pic, it doesn't seem to need a paint job. Why do you want to paint it? Looks good from here.

The OP states that the bike in the picture isn't his bike. It just has a better pic of the decal.

Can't hurt to post some pics of the OP's bike. There might be alternatives to painting or there might not be.

Here are some photos of my bike, with the head tube decal and some areas where paint has been lost. These photos don't convey the extent of paint loss on the down tube and other areas, but give an idea. Much as I would like to keep it as is, I really want to use the bike and live near the coast, so I would like to make sure it is protected.

Bikes: A few ;)

What an absolute beauty. Keep it clean, ride it a bunch, and you'll likely not need to worry about anything.

There is one thing you may be able to do. If there is any way you could obtain close up digital images of the graphic from a good quality camera, it would make the job of making a decal far, far easier for someone skilled in PhotoShop. Trying to work from a small 72dpi image from the web is very difficult, time consuming and never as accurate. Just keep in mind that, should the chance come up to see one of these in person, good quality, large photos from all angles and measurements would get you 80% of the way to your decal.

Get in touch with Gus salmon on the CR list. He can make those perfectly and it won't cost you $600.

Thank you

Thanks for your tips everyone. I have found someone that is willing to take some good quality photos of the decal they have. I will also be in touch with Gus. The option of not touching it at all is also on the table, so I'll see how I go!
Cheers!
