Abus 540 Granite vs. 640

Hello, I use to have the Abus 540 x granite plus, great lock. It got lost and I am ordering a new lock. Now they released the 640, which is lighter,do you guys have experience with this model? am I going to note a difference in security?. Abus security rate for 540 is 15, maximun in the Abus scale. The Abus security rate for 640 is 12.

I, like Bob, have the Bordo. I really like it for it's flexibility and easy storage. No more U locks for me.

Scary...the 640 lock weighs 900 lbs!

Seriously, though, I am going to assume that they forgot to convert the grams for their European spec to lbs for the US site. Which means the 640 weighs 2 lb, while the 540 weighs 3.2 lb.

I think it boils down to whether 1) that 1.2 lb really matters to you, and 2) your comfort level with where you are locking it. Given that Abus locks are a lot less common than Kryptonite, I'm not sure a thief would distinguish between a 540 and 640 anyway. If they are going to take an angle grinder to the lock, we're probably only talking about 30 seconds or less difference anyway. Maybe the 540 resists jack-based attacks significantly better, but the real-world security between the two may not be much different. That said, I'd personally pay the weight penalty for the stronger lock. I have a 540 and would choose it again over the 640. Of course, I usually use it for my cargo bikes where weight is a non-issue.

I am using this for a road bike and occasional conmute rides. When I take the bike for the road, I wont bring the lock.

I did not know the Bordo, it looks interesting, what are the benefits over U locks. I thought U locks were the best option

According to Abus, the Bordo 6500 has a rating of 15, which is the same as their best U-lock. Assuming that's true, the Bordo is more compact in folded state so may be more convenient. But locking requires the extra step to unfold. So it seems like personal preference and convenience is what makes the difference.

Bikes: Heavy, with friction shifters

+1 Bordo fan. The Granit X-plus version, not the weak one.

To answer the OP: 540 Granit X-plus is better, safer. 1mm thicker steel. I'd order that, or the Bordo, because it's more flexible to lock and more compact to carry.

Steel is heavy - the lighter the lock, it is either smaller, or less hard to hack.

Bikes: Many bikes in three states and two countries, mainly riding Moots Vamoots, Lynskey R265 disc and a Spot Denver Zephyr nowadays

Bordo and the clones are lighter than most U locks and they are harder to use a tire jack to open than a U lock because they don't have a rigid frame to brace the jack into.

Their weak link is the joints between the links, though. That's what makes the ABUS ones better (and more expensive) than the cloned models from other companies.

But don't get the wrong impression, the Bordo locks are lighter than the best U locks, but they are still very heavy compared to a chain or cable lock.

Bikes: Heavy, with friction shifters

Carrying ease:
1) Bordo is the easiest to carry.
2) Then U-lock.
3) Then a chain.

As far as the ease of locking around different size posts, locking wheels as well etc:
1) Chain
2) Bordo
3) U-lock

As far as safety goes - Abus ratings are precise enough. Any Granit X-plus model (chain, u-lock, or bordo) has good hardened steel and a lock that is hard to pick. The heavier (and more expensive), the harder to cut/break.
