That's two new good ideas (to me) in a row!
Never thought of that before either.

Just curious, did you need to use them because your brake levers weren't V brake compatible,or did you just want to replace the stock noodles? I used a set of these when I swapped the canti's for V's on my Fuji cross bike. Worked really well.

Don't bother with the Rustoleum version. I bought a can and took them up on their money back guarantee. I was initially going to use the Rustoleum to do some strobe stripes on the fork, but the test piece I did didn't meet my standards.
cool, thanks.

They've been on the bike so long I don't even think about them.

As I had mentioned, it's in place of the noodle. I have V-brake levers, but the OEM noodles developed surface rust years ago so I replaced them with the travel agents and never looked back.

One frame color I wouldn't suggest trying this with is RED The reason I say this is because red is traditionally (and legally) a color that is to be used to the rear of a vehicle.

Hi, Raiyn!

I see you have changed the pattern of the tape on the rims. You used to recommend something different. I know because I followed your suggestion (see picture of my bike below).

What gives with the new pattern? Have you performed any visibility tests? Is one pattern more eye catching than the other?

I wonder what my bike looks like from a car driver's point of view with all the reflective tape I applied to it. A grocery store employee once told me that the wheels really called his attention as I was approaching the store. That's all I know by now.

By the way, great job with the stealth tape!

The new pattern seems to be a bit more effective due to their proximity creating a "larger" surface area that's hit by the light making it appear brighter. Splitting the rim into quarters creates distinct "on" and "off" zones which aids in the observers ability to observe directionality.

I've seen both of our bikes from the driver's seat and I have to say even with the bike's lights turned off the visibility of the bikes is pretty good. Once again the tape is no substitute for lights, and should never be thought of or used as such, but the added benefits when used in conjunction with lights are excellent.

Well this thread really inspired me..
I have ordered some silver and black 3m reflective tape to stealth out my bike too. So far I have only put on the silver tape in some spots. Once I recieve my black reflective tape it will go on my rims, forks, handle bar ends, and rear carbon stays. Thanks again for the idea and for making my commute safer...

You all are missing out on another nice bit of reflective kit: reflective sidewalls. I've got them on several bikes and try to get tires with them whenever possible.

Looks good so far, but I do have to remind you that the reason I put red tape on my seatstays is because the color red is legally required on the rear of a bicycle in my state as it is in yours:

(d) Every bicycle operated upon any highway during darkness shall
be equipped (1) with a lamp emitting a white light which, while the
bicycle is in motion, illuminates the highway in front of the

to the operator and visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and

I wouldn't want you to potentially get a ticket, or lose a lawsuit due to an "improperly" equipped bike. Remember lawyers suck, and will turn the most minute detail against you, don't give them any ammo against you. It's my personal opinion, that you'll be fine with the silver and black tape in the other locations as they reflect as white.

Reflective side walls are a great thing, I personally just don't go for the whole white wall thing

I can't stress this enough. PLEASE CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS
Quick link to bike laws including some international regs. https://www.massbike.org/bikelaw/bikelaw.htm

"Stealth" reflectors are a wonderful thing, but I don't want anyone having legal issues because they don't comply with local laws.

Naw,they're just a thin stripe on the sidewall. Like maybe a 1/4". Think old Hotwheels.

I'm aware of what they look like, and I realize that they're not the "Wide Whites" beach cruiser style (although THAT would really be effective) I just don't care for them. Now if Sweetskinz came out with a 26x1.5 puncture resistant slick I'd be willing to check it out.

Old Hotwheels had red stripes

Hey, Raiyn, cool reflective tape ideas here. Thanks for the referral to the thread. Do you have any recommendations for particular bike lights, as well?

Thanks again.

Agreed. I really like the idea of those tires, but a few more size choices would be helpful.

They're progressing (slowly). I remember when they first came out all they had was the generic knobby pattern.

Perhaps green or black in a pin stripe style?

Interesting link, Raiyn. Thanks for posting it. Contrary to what I had believed, nowhere does my state's law say a bicyclist must stay to the far right of motor vehicle traffic. I guess in my state, bicyclists are a legitimate part of any traffic, just like cars & motorcycles.

Bikes: GMC Denali Road Bike ($150), Generic MTB ($50)

Hey great thread and some great ideas here. I may have to order some of that reflective tape unless it's sold through some store locally. Hmm... I'll have to look around.

AL law is kind of interesting on reflectors...

(a) Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type approved by the department which shall be visible from all distances from 100 feet to 600 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector.
So no matter what i need a red reflector in the back and whatever it is has to be approved by the department. No telling if this includes reflective tape, but I'm sure keeping my old stock reflector is a good thing.

Also this was good to know as I put a flashing red light on the bike... keeping the old reflector on there was miraculously keeping me legal as well (IF I rode at night, which is the only time I'd need reflectors legally on the bike).

I think as far as my road bike goes since I may commute some on it I'll hit the red tape in the back for extra help and maybe add an extra reflector or two somewhere back there. Then since I have deep V rims I can tape on them without worrying about affecting the brakes. I don't care about the looks as much as staying super visible even if I don't ride after dark very often. Still some of that dark blue tape on parts of the frame (or black for the black parts) will help outline it nicely without making the bike too dorky.

All kinds/colors of reflective tape. I've ordered from them several times.
