Ride of silence tonight , who's participating?
Our ride of silence is in Niskayuna NY at 6:30 pm
4.6 mile course (2 laps) looks like we should have a decent turnout, though Rain is forcasted this evening.

There is a ride scheduled in Toronto (6:30/7 at Bloor/Spadina, same as CM) tonight, but I cannot make it.
Edit: Here are some details for the Toronto ride if anyone is interested: https://www.ibiketo.ca/node/129

it's a silent, slower bike ride for remberance of those cyclists who were killed while riding.

Thanks, I didn't even know about this.
I just set one up in my neighborhood and at least 10 people will be riding.
Just last night, not half a mile from my house, a 26 year old male was struck and critically injured by a car.

I'm not even sure if there is one here in Burlington. It's supposed to be raining too.
Oh yeah, there is one tonight. Hmm.
Wow, Niskayuna... Where's it starting? I grew up there. (River Road...)

My ride is in Cedarhurst, NY. They are expecting pretty severe thunderstorms so there is a chance I may be riding alone, so be it.
If I do end up riding alone, do you think anyone would mind if I went faster than 12mph?

I will be at the Snohomish County ride tonight: a 12 mile, 12 mph route through downtown Everett. We are meeting at the county administration complex at 7 pm. I will be on a gray Dahon folder and wearing tights and an orange long-sleeve jersey. Find me and say hello if you are at this ride.

The Joliet ride was cold, partially rainy, and more cold. Being in a group with nobody talking (obviously, hence ride of silence) was a little wierd. The police escort was pretty-neat though. There were 5 cop cars in the parking lot, but I think only 4 were escorting us, as the other car shuttled a bike-cop that rode the route with us. I'm not sure if the police escort is common with this type of event, but it was neat riding though major intersections of 4-lane roads without even slowing down.
The downside: although there were a couple trucks/vans with banners stating what the ride was for, and under flashing-light escort of police, people still yelled/heckled at the group of riders. I'd really like to know why people have so much hate in their hearts towards cyclists. Granted, I've only been at this for just over a year, but I can't think of a reason to hate cyclists?

Wow, that's pretty bad that you were heckled.
I rode the Houston ROS, which was an approx. 8 mile round trip from the med center through downtown and back. We didn't have any identifying banners or ******* or anything. All of the cars were really considerate, and even the busses were pretty reasonable. A couple of folks asked us what race we were training for, and when we explained the purpose of the ride, it seemed to make them stop and think a little bit.
Big props to the 8-10 (?) year old girls riding with their father in the pack with us. They were little troopers!

Portland had a good turnout. The police escorted us and blocked traffic all the way. They were great. The executive director of our local bike advocacy organization spoke after the ride. It was most moving that he was crying along with many of us riders. For those of you with children: Teach them what black armbands mean. It was weird that most people were asking us what they were for. It may be high church of me, but I thought everyone knew about mourning bands. Guess not.

Seattle, several hundred riders, no police *******, only a couple of hecklers, one jackstrap in a truck, parked, honking repeatedly and yelling "get off the road"- sad. its' people like this that road rage cyclists and threaten us with their vehicles while riding solo and the drivers feel inconveinenced.
Should bike advocacy include a strong public awareness component to try and change drivers' perspective of cyclists?

our Ride In Niskayuna NY was very nice.
had the NY state police escorting us on bikes as well as Niskayuna police In patrol cars at Intersections, several paramedics were also with the group.
great job by all the parties involved. I commute alone early in the AM but riding in a big group like this is a hoot!
great turn out i'd say over 100 riders , no accidents.
I was the only fendered bike in the whole bunch No brooks saddles either except for a husband wife Tandem team I rode next to .
I was going to ride my spiffy fancy falcon single speed but decided on the "Beast" My full dresser Cross check fenders ,full length leather flaps ,12 volt light system, grunge guard, shellacked taped bars, stainless water bottles...
Got lots of comments on the beast most were very curious about my set up.

Rockville, MD (outside DC) was great. I found it surprisingly moving and spent most of the ride remembering a friend and trying to imagine what he'd be like today if given the chance to grow up (was 19 when killed).
We had about 15 riders, most wearing red for personal car hits, some wearing black for rides in memory of friends lost to cars. Weather was nice, cool and relatively dry. We had a two police car and one police motorcycle escort. The police were fabulous and blocked all intersections, lights & traffic. I saw one group of ppl clap for us as we went by (doubt they knew what we were doing) and a few random honks of support.
Hats off to our organzier, the police and the riders. It was a special event.
