Specialized Globe City
I was down at the local LBS yesterday and they had an 07 Specialized Globe City. The bike is spec'd as a a full on commuter bike, but with low end components. Still, at $500 maybe?
Anyone who can give me feedback on this bike? Good commuter bike or glorified hybrid?

It's a good bike... I bought one to use as a city utility/commuter back last spring, and have a little over 700 or so miles on it.
I wound up replacing the inner tubes with Presta-valved tubes (the stock tubes are Shrader), and redid the wheels with Velox rim tape to replace the thin strip of rubber they had in there. Also added a tail light, since the hub-generator lights go out when you hit a stop sign or long red.
It's mostly hybrid geometry, but geared so that you can roll pretty well with it, I set mine up for the same fit that I get on my MTB, so it's a little more aggressive than your normal hybrid. I really like it, and in addition to commuting and just tooling around town with it, have used it a lot in teaching bike safety and commuting classes. It makes a good cargo hauler, whether you set it up with regular panniers or just a milk crate.

I have nearly 3,000 miles on my 3 year-old Specialized Globe and she rolls as well as the day I bought her. Mine came with a lot of stuff: generator lights, rack, fenders, chain guard, and an integrated lock. I've added a computer, panniers, and a Cateye headlight and taillight. The standard generator headlight is okay, just not bright enough to really light up the bike paths I'm on in the early morning. I haven't had the same experience as the other reader regarding the generator lights going out at long traffic signals. I've timed mine, and they stay on well past three minutes.
All in all, the Globe is a solid commuter bike. I think you'll like it.

I'm commuting 4 to 5 days a week on an '08 Specialized Globe City 6 (Internal gear 8 speed) Currently at 1860+ miles.
Here is a link to the latest version of that bike. https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCExperience.jsp?eid=178 Really expensive now.

The bike is not perfect, but it's proven dependable, comfortable and it's a good looking bike. I paid $910. plus tax, trunk bag, new pedals, battery lights.... you get the idea.
Hope this information helps. - 3bikes
P.S. if you run generator lights, some headlight models have LED pause lights. My system has Halogen front which goes out at stop, red LED rear light that stays on for several minutes at stop. (Also is bright as hell constant red) The front light is just enough for city streets.
