Samherst 09-08-08 10:06 AM

Just finished putting things together on Barnaby, an old Fuji Ace with a steel frame and just enough speed to make the commute an infinite joy. It was also nice to find out he had enough clearance for full fenders.

Hi -- Great looking bike! I have been considering the Axiom Hudson Trunk bag for my bike. I have a Superflash light mounted below my seat and a rather short rack so I am concerned about the size of the bag. Can you do me a BIG favor and give me the overall dimensions of your Hudson bag? The websites I have looked at don't agree on the size! Thanks!

Just got this over the weekend - a USED 2008 Trek 7.3 FX! Couldn't believe the guy had my size frame (22.5") and had already added most of the accessories I was going to buy anyway. Saved several hundred dollars so I'm stoked.

It sure is a step up from my old Hard Rock (which I may keep as a learning tool)...

Is that a rear rack mounted on the front?

yup

I actually just put it on last night because I had it sitting around and I wondered if it would work. It does, I just need to finish making a proper bracket to attach it to the caliper bolt on the fork.

Ah, that was going to be my next question, where to attach the bracket. I've been wanting to try this on my commuting/touring bike.

you pretty much have to make one or "alter" an existing bracket to work. I'll try to remember to post a pic or two of it when it's done.

Thanks JB. The bag is approximately 15.75" long x 6" wide x 5.75" tall. I've also seen the Arkel Tail Rider up close and it's about the same length
but a couple of inches deeper. Definitely better quality than the Axiom but it's also about $40 more. After checking it out...I think I would've paid the $40.

Can you be specific about the mods to your Le Tour Luxe? My '84 is still stock, but I'm interested in exploring options.

I bought it at a thrift for $10 completely stock all the way down to the tires. It's turned into kind of a poor man's Riv by chance. It has a new Nitto stem and noodle bars. Sugino cranks and bb that I got from a college kid who never used them. The axle on the rear was bent so I spread the frame and upgraded to 700 Mavic 319's. Added Deore rear derailleur and Sora front with Sora 8 speed brifters. And the Brooks b-17. I really just pieced it together as I could find stuff cheap.

bigbenaugust 09-12-08 11:42 AM

Is that p-clamps at the bottom of the fork? I tried that once and it... didn't end well. Maybe I just didn't tighten it enough.

I've seen this bike here before and I must say, I'm impressed. I wanted to do the same conversion with a Bianchi hybrid I had. Do you have 'cross tires on that Trek? If you do, do you ever ride any trails? I went from this to this in less than a year. :D

Since being laid off from work I'm not commuting with it however, it makes a for a nice road bike.
Some of the upgrades-
  • FSA Pro Wing bar
  • Thompson Elite seatpost
  • Brooks Champion Flyer saddle
  • Swapped out the stock Vittoria Radonneur's which are excellent tires for some 28mm Vittoria Rubino Pro II's

I had Schwalbe CX Compe cross tyres on the bike and with those I could ride the trails and even some light to moderate singletrack... I just put on the Marathons and will put the cross tyres back on when the snow flies.

I often think that this bike is one of my finest bits of work as the finished product has exceeded all my expectations.

wasnt meant to have the oregon ducks color scheme...but that is brought up often.

RSX and Alivio components.

I added the PB fenders, rear Eco rack, PB lights, Brass Bell, Schwalbe Kethlar Marathon Slicks, Salmon brake pads, and more recently the double kick stand like Gary Fisher Simple Cities have. The new Back Backer Plus Ortlieb bags fit nicely on the rack to.

Solid bike with about 2000 miles commuting time this last 2 years.
