I'm thinking a plastic bag over the whole thing would be a good idea too. I wouldn't think the Nuvi would like getting wet.

Depends on the model. The Nuvi 500's are rated "IPX7 waterproofing withstands accidental submersion to 1m for 30 min." They are fine in the rain. I have my old GPSV in the weather all the time but I'm warming up to the the Nuvi and may upgrade soon. :thumb:

Hi,

May I know more about the installation of your road shifters with the mechanical disc brake system? What is the feel like?
Call me crazy or what, been trying to install road parts on a mtb frame. I have a set of shimano 2200 shifters, but i been told that it will be tough to work that with a v-brake system. Anyone can shed some light on this issue? haha.

Thanks!!

Cheers,
Joel

Thanks.

Since some time ago I didn't have much time to spend on this bike so I just converted it into a "commuter" bike so I can ride it more.:)

But soon I will be moving and I really wondered if it could handle some light snow over the new place

A few pics of my newly finished single speed winter commuter. Was originally an 80's Raleigh 531 race bike.

Lots of lights for the dark ride home!!!

Ride perfectly...

Took a cellphone pic of my ride today but it does not capture just how dripping dripping wet it was.

I'd like to see more & better pics of your LHT. It looks fully tricked out! (or would that be 'trucked out'?)

They're Avid BB7 road disc brakes. I have the same setup on my '06 Schwinn DBX. They work just fine with regular road shifters.

Hydraulic discs have a better feel, but these are still quite good, and stop just as well as conventional brakes. Big bonus for working in all conditions -- my DBX is my bad-weather bike. I still have the cyclocross levers on mine, too.

marcryan27, that's a hot-looking Dahon. The matte finish and black wheels look really good.

it does bro! no complains except my butt hurts if im riding for a while hehehe

What he said. Works like a charm. I almost bought the '06, but I liked a few features of the '05 model better, not to mention it was drastically reduced when I bought it. If I'd known how many parts I would have had to upgrade before I was happy with it, though, I'd have saved up for something a little nicer like the Trek Portland. It was actually somewhat of an impulse purchase after months of research.

I've got the '07. They finally got it right and then discontinued it. Go figure. I think I got the last one from performance. The only things I've added are cages, pump, lights, and rack. Came with full fenders. In '06 they moved the rear caliper to the other side of the seat stay to make the rear "rack friendly".

As best as I can figure, mine's an '06 and doesn't have a rack-friendly rear caliper layout like I see in the pic of the '07 at BikePedia.

Ah, well, they're all good bikes anyway, and I could still get a rack to fit if I want to. I recently scooted the seat forward a touch because it was too far back for proper pedaling, and now it finally feels right. I was about to sell it because it felt too big (which it is, kinda, by one size; I've put a shorter stem on it, too).

How is the fold? These are the alluminum frame ones, right? I was looking at the just under $500 Speed 7 Sram ones with a steel frame and no standard rear rack...

the LBS guy said they do not handle as well as the alluminum ones, but are more fun...

Any thoughts?

I like the bike. I also like that they are 1/2 the price of a Brompton.

the fold is ok... not that hard but it takes a while to get used too but very easy once you got it. yup i think is aluminum, a bit light without the extra accessories (rack etc) in terms of handle i havent riden a speed 7 so i dont know the difference but i like how it drive. sometimes i wish it had the same setups like the speed pro... what i meant was the deraileurs etc hehehe

I guess I need to update my commuter pics. I got panniers and a new rear rim. The bike was practically new when I got it but had been sitting for years, and when I rode up a sidewalk edge the rear rim tacoed (probably due to loose spokes). I got it fixed well enough to ride, but it was never right after that, and the wheel kept going out of true. I picked up my new rim today; I can hardly wait for the morning!

That is a very interesting commute style upright, yet flat bar bike. It reminds me of a hybrid with the handle bars, but they seem higher than most fitness hybrids...it seems like it has some of the style of a newer Dutch bike. Very cool. What kind of gears/components?

How does it sit. Upright?
Name of the Nishiki?

Doohickie 10-29-08 11:00 PM

It's an XRS Sport. It has a Shimano Acera X rear derailleur, Shimano Altus crank, front derailleur and hubs. It's got a 23" frame. I like it a lot but have considered putting either cruiser bars or drop bars on it because the flat bars just aren't quite right. I may just stay with how it came, though, since I'm getting used to it.

It is a very late Nishiki I think, when Derby was making them in the U.S., just before they stopped U.S. sales in 2001. When I got it Labor Day weekend this year, it still had the store price tags on it (estate sale; apparently an old dude bought it but never rode it. I also got his '66 Raleigh DL-1).

I was using the granny gears a lot when I first started riding it. Now I'm trying to figure out how to put a taller chain ring in the front; the biggest one only has 38 teeth, compared to 52 on my other Nishiki.

If you want to learn more about my bikes, click the links in my sig. I've owned one of my four bikes for 24 years; the other three I bought in the last two months (and all those purchases makes my wife nervous).

Whoooo, got my new bike today! Motobecane Fantom Cross CX,56cm.

The box, and my current commuter:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_0932.jpg

A little box damage, but all the goods were fine.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_0933.jpg

Before assembly:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_0935.jpg

Everything was packed tightly and neatly, nothing damaged on the bike, and it only took me a bit to get it together:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_0937.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_0938.jpg

I'm still adjusting things, but it should be ready for a commute in the morning!

littlefoot 10-31-08 05:15 AM

Nice folder! I'm saving up for my next purchase and it very likely will be a folder. Would most folders hold up to a daily 6 mile commute?
It's fixing to get very crowded in our office and I may need a bike that can be stored close to my desk or in a supply closet. Either that or park outside again. :(

I know that the Trek 7000 is looked down upon in these parts, but I am enjoying it!

I've got a Trek 7100 that I bought about 2 weeks ago, and I've been riding to work on it every day since. So far, it's been great!

Nope! Still fiddling with the brakes, though. I've always had problems with Cantilevers.

lets start a trek 7000 series club !! I have a 7100 i bought new in 2002, the only things i have changes are the saddle. replaced the freewheel about 2 yrs ago.. I think it has close to 5k on it and no complaints from me really. early on it seemed as if i had a problem, but once it was all worn in it worked ok.
