And I meant to add: How's the loaded handling with the straight fork?

It handles great. Much better than the bike I used to have it on. A '68 Varsity with narrow drop bars. I have much more leverage over my load with the mountain bike bars. YOu can put pretty much anything you want on the front rack. I have put several bags of charcoal (like 60 pounds worth) on top for 6 miles. No flex or anything. For that kind of weight though, I have a trailer, so It usually doesn't get to haul that much weight. I either bungee my 40 pound bookbag to it, or I Put it in a milkcrate on the front or rear rack.

Thanks, its a bit on the heavy side, but I can haul anything on it. I tried pacing a guy on a rroad bike today. He was doing about 18 or 19 into the wind. With no load whatsoever. After a few blocks I had to say to myself, "Frank, his bike is lighter than yours, more aerodynamic, has narrower, higher pressure tires, and he doesn't have milk crates strapped to his front and rear racks (he didn't have racks) with various things in them." So I dropped back down to 15.

Here she is in al her glory...well almost, I still have some tweaking to perform.

I swapped out the cheap-o suspension fork for the Surly 1x1 fork. If your going full ridgid, Id highly recommend this fork!

The trunk......works really well, I cant even tell it's back there. I might leave this as-is for now, excpet get a new one thats a little cleaner and not as beat up lookin. The little bags will hold tools and spares.

With the recent dog incidents Ive encountered I got some Halt dog spray and the little clip thats holds it. I still need to add my lights and maybe a computer. Im also thinking about some Nashbar "Trekking bars" for a few more hand positions.

I did 20 miles on it today riding my future work route and back. It sucked getting there with the hill's and the constant headwind, I cut around 5 minutes on the return trip with the tail wind....plus there more hill's on the way to work, makes it easier on the way home!

If you guys/gals have any ides about what I could do better, by all means

Just got finished converting my old '98 Stumpjumper to a dedicated commuter/grocery getter. I originally wanted to get a brand new commuter specific bike, but noticed my Stumpjumper was the least ridden bike in my garage. I wanted to go on the cheap so I decided to convert it to a commuter.

I was never thrilled about the green/red color scheme. Looked like a Christmas bike and I thought I should've ridden it in a Santa suit.

Great work there Commo. The tires look beefy enough to handle anything the road throws at it. The rear fender looks like it has faded chevrons on it. Are those reflective stickers or does the fender come like that?

Thanks. I haven't had the chance to give the bike a real workout yet, maybe later today. Yeah, I had some black reflective chevron strips leftover from my motorcycle so I put them on the rear fender. They look black and blend into the fender but when a light source hits them, they're reflect silver. I wanted the back of the bike a little more visible to cage drivers.

Very sweet ride! How are those tires with pavement? They look slow to me, are they any better than knobbies?
Also, how do you get the fenders fastened at the top of the wheel? I know there's a loop up there on fenders that goes on the brake bolt or something, but how did you do it with a suspension fork? I have a bike I'd like to do this on but it has a front suspension fork and I'm not sure how to mount the fender.

I know what you mean about the renewed passion for you older bike. I felt the same way about my Trek before I started messing with it.

Would it be worth the money having my '85 Raleigh Marathon powdercoated?

I've done some research the past few days, since my fork is a bit rusty (showed up while hosing down the bike, some bits of paint just flew off) and the frame coat has seen it's best days. When going with a new, more modern color, I would be able to use more modern parts in the rebuild, since it's now all dark green, silver and aluminium...

I made a set using overstock brackets used for rear racks that I got from local bike shops. Worked out nicely.

I know he's not a commuter, but I saw this pic of Obama biking with his kids last summer and had to share.

The new president rides a Trek comfort bike (the bike is either really new, seldom ridden, or cleaned up really well). I've never noticed a helmet with only a single strap before. Seeing him towing his daughter like that is a bit sad because we all know that the girls won't be able to have many childhood cycling adventures.

I wonder what sort of free bike he'll get from manufacturers once he's in office? If he's not into uncomfortable racing bikes (road or mountain) it'll be tough for any big producers to come up with an American made rig.
