I haven't posted to this forum since my Introduction several years ago, but I have been lurking and reading since then. I recently started to do a 30 mile round trip commute once a week on my 2009 Specialized Allez Double that I bought a month and a half ago, so here is what I am currently riding and fear to leave locked up outside during quick stops. Not pictured are the new Shimano PD-R540 pedals (boy was that a learning curve!!), Seat bag, PB Blaze 1/2 watt and PB Superflash.

I am in the process of locally trying to find a suitable, not too cheap, steel 10 speed to use as a dedicated commuter that wouldn't break my heart if it were stolen and that I could keep in full commuter mode whilst the Allez will be my weekend fun bike. Fun part to my added commuting is that I am a Marine and I PT my Marines 3 days a week and I PT on my own the other 2 days, so I should be in really, really good shape soon!!

This bike has been fun since I got rid of the slow and heavy cheap MTB's I was using. The past few Saturdays I have been just out riding each morning exploring back roads I have never been on around here. Today I had a coworker ride with me on a mock commute to our office and we both had a blast on the little excursion. I thank you all for keeping me motivated to start commuting.

I'm envious!

The Decision to purchase the LHT was a difficult one, as the Crosscheck was a VERY close second. :)

The new commuter, Phase 1
 

Phase 1, singlespeed phase - Norco Vesta Belt Drive, Steel Frame.

I was pretty dead set on a Civia Bryant, but came across this and it became a tossup for me.

Main info: Reynolds 525 frame, Chromoly fork, sliding dropouts, belt drive, disc brakes.

Stuff I changed from stock (before even riding it:

I have only had the bike for 2 days, and have ridden it in dry and VERY rainy conditions. So far, so good. I love the feel of the bike. The Marathon Supremes are awesome. The belt drive is super responsive and dead quiet.

Soooo, phase 2 will be the addition of an Alfine-based rear wheel. The necessary stuff - Alfine hub, Mavic A719 rim, spokes, cog, etc in transit. J-tek in hand. I'll build the rear wheel, then MIGHT put it on.
I'll post some phase 2 pics once I get the rear wheel all set. I'm in no hurry though :D

Here are some pics. The first is yesterday after I picked it up - I installed the fenders and rack this morning. Most of the pics don't show the color - the drivetrain closeup is the best representation of the true color.

Love it! Props for Norco! Congrats on the purchase - the mods to date look great. Too bad Norco didn't engineer the rear caliper mounts on the chainstay; IMHO all disc-brake equipped commuters should be built this way. A couple of questions: Why did you choose the Vesta over the Ceres if you were planning to switch to IGH? Wouldn't it be cheaper to put drop bars and the Jtek shifter on the Ceres than to install an Alfine hub on the Vesta? From what I understand they are the same bike geometrically. Is it the color? I'm curious because I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Ceres but I'll be using trekking bars to get the extra hand positions.

BTW - What kind of bike is the IGH-equipped model that's sharing space with your Vesta?

Excellent point on the Ceres, and I agree that you'd save a touch going your suggested route.
For me, I wanted to have both Singlespeed and IGH options available so would be doing the whole rear wheel build regardless. That, combined with my slight color preference for the blue, and the fact that the Vesta was available in my size and the Ceres was a bit of a wait.........

'06 Bianchi Milano 120th anniversary. It goes on Craigslist this week :)
It's a good bike, and the charcoal/silver paint is a classy combo. The milano is what got me off of my deraileurred past and into the new generation of Internally Geared Hubs.

I have a road bike for exercise, and for getting places fast, but I wanted a bike for errands and trips to and from the bars.

This is my new (old) commuter for trips around town. It's a mid 90's Gary Fisher Marlin that my dad got somehow. It's been hanging in the basement for a couple years. The funniest part is that I actually work from home, so my work commute is walking down the hall to the guest bedroom in my apartment.

So far, it's just got bar ends, some aluminum pedals, and a rack. I will eventually change out the tires for something less agressive, add fenders, and get some panniers for around town errands and maybe shorter touring trips.

I will probably replace the 23mm tires with wider ones once the they wear out or if they prove to be flat-prone.

The old Dakota it's in front of is my 3rd commuter is worth less than the new bike :lol:

Noooo!!!! don't do it! If they're flat-prone, just get less flat-prone tires. It's sacrilege to put anything wider than 23's on a road bike (some would disagree, I know).
