Nothing super fancy. I just wanted to get back into riding and ride a year or two before hitting the trails. I just finished a 50km ride, bringing the total to 500km.

A clean lookin' machine.

Thanks. Yeah my commute is < 10 miles each way and I keep work clothes at work so I can travel pretty light.

I try to make the full 50 mile round trip at least once a week, plus multi-mode and commute 24miles RT on at least two other days. Plus leisure rides.
1977 Schwinn Traveller III. New Wienman 404 wheels, Panaracer Pasella Tourgard tires, upgraded to 7 speed Shimano freewheel. Topped off with a new set of brake pads front and rear.
I was concerned about the wheels, because they were so cheap. ~$90 for the set at Jenson, but I've run these for 600 miles and they are only out of true about 1MM, and I ride some rough country roads with old chipseal.
Love the tires. Decent flat protection and big enough to cushion my 250lbs on a sprung Brooks.
Also super happy with the Radbot 1000 blinky. Super bright and 7+ hour runtime on blink mode.
Just picked up a USB charged front flashing light to mitigate getting hooked.
Definitely looking into clipless for the commute. The platforms make my toes go numb around 35 miles in.
For such an old bike, it sure rides nice.

Great looking ride. What's the bag you've got on back? Looks like it would hold my laptop nicely, which is my biggest stumbling block to starting this "commute" thing....

How come your seat bag is so loose? Looks like you should tighten it up and move the seatpost reflector down so it's under the bag. just my 2 pennies.... nice bike btw!

Finally figured out how to attach pics that are not image links. Commuter is a 1995 Mongoose IBOC Rigid MTB found on Craigslist, replacing my former MTB commuter that I accidentally ran over it with my car! No FD right now - took it off during clean-up, looking at changing the 42-32-22 crank to a more street friendly 50-34 road crank (it'll fit on this old frame). Total investment: $200. Daily ride is 6 miles RT.

Sweet and old Mongoose and a big frame. Those big mountain bike frames are harder to find.

This is how she is set up currently. Dual panniers (one Sunlite Grocery Getter, one Axiom Transit Hunter), flipped riser bars, flipped stem, Brooks B-17, and a fork mounted reflector.

Those are 'Trek' brand panniers I picked up from the LBS for ~$75 for the pair. I carry an IBM T-42 laptop in it (12" x 10" x 1"). Works like a champ. Maybe an inch to spare in the 12" direction, and two or three in the other.
The newer laptops are definitely a bit wider, so I'd bring the machine with you to the shop and make sure if fits first.

First post... Thought this would be a good time, since the subject appeared to be close... I've just started with this commute "thing". Got my Trailwind a couple of years ago and just added a Topeak DXP and rack to it. I got a padded case for my laptop and it fits nice in the one of the panniers when its opened.

If you are interested in the nitty gritty details, here ya go: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...es.?highlight=

I picked it up a few months ago as a primary vehicle, and I am extremely pleased. I am slowly turning it into a frankenbike though.

Thanks, I should actually. I think originally I wanted the reflector as high up as possible and I also didn't have the saddle up as high, so that was the only way to get the reflector visible.

Here's my wife's commuter/upright/urban/grocery getter bike, built up from a Soma Buena Vista frameset, and shod with 650B wheels:

And here's my daily commuter, a 1972 French Jeunet with full Reynolds 531 frame and fork, outfitted as a porteur:

Hilarious, and so would I (if it fit me)!

Just finished project "Please don't steal my bike while im in class in the dark part of campus", the title needs work. It came out a little, uh, redder then I thought it was going. That being said it actually rides really well and I won't be heartbroken when it gets ganked. Just need to find a nice rack that I can strap my bag to and im good. Thoughts on which red thing to ditch first or leave as is?
