Heh, I do find it amusing how much people assume about one's politics based on the fact that one is on a bike.

Yep. When asked, I usually reply "I'm opposed to stupidity."

I'm going to see my commute go from 12 miles round trip to over 40 miles round trip. So, I picked this up on clearance from my LBS:
2010 Specialized Secteur Sport Triple
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=214537http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=214536

Have an old Topeak QR rack on the back, but a Tubus Logo is on the way. Only other mod so far is a VDO C4 computer and Crank Bros pedals.

The Surly Pugsley, with it's 4inch tires, this would make one awesome winter commuter. Not mine but I wish it was. I wouldn't have much use for it here in Albuquerque. We do get snow here but not enough to justify buying a bike like that.

This is my dream winter ride! My plan is to put studs on an old 26" this winter, to make sure I like winter riding, while I save up enough for a Pugs next winter... we'll see how that goes...

My new ride this summer... sorry for the shadow of the photographer (hot and sweaty, just arrived at work, not thinking straight yet)...

My trusty steed. Ridgeback Horizon, pretty stock except Mach 1 Omega wheelset (original wheels fell apart after about 10k miles!) with 35mm tyres.

Even the ugly bikes in this thread are beautiful. When you commute on a bike daily, you refine its functions to a high degree.

Word... have been bike spotting here in PDX and it is actually hard to find anything I would call an ugly bike here.

One of these days, I'll do a photo journal of bikes locked on the streets of Manhattan. I grew up there, and it was always a bike city, but it's really exploded now. And almost every bike makes a statement somehow.

I switch the lights back and forth. I'm planning on putting a new saddle and slick tires onto the trek, and am considering getting some albatross style bars to replace the flat bar. I also might swap the cassette out for something that makes more sense for road riding.

Is this a 1 or 2? MY LBS only carries Giants so I wondered about the Roam for commuting/long distance riding. How do you like it?

Edit: I answered my own question; the disc brakes tell me. Question still stands.

I must know where you got that backpack\seatpost bag contraption.

That`s a Rixen & Kaul backpack attached to the seatpost with a Klickfix extender adapter.

ThorUSA carries some of the Klickfix stuff.

It's been a while - I have been busy with other things, and took a bit of a sabbatical from the forums.
I've been busy, though. I built a new wheel for the Marinoni around an Alfine 8 hub (that I had in the parts bin), and the result is phenomenal. I've been enjoying it thoroughly, though I will be selling the bike soon - I'm consolidating to one bike, and will be building up a Singular Gryphon in the coming weeks. I've sold the Norco Vesta - the geometry was just not quite right for me.

Anyway, here's the Marinoni in commuter guise:

....and on a completely different note, I've obtained my son's permission to use his 29er mountain bike as my primary commuter so I can properly clean and package the Marinoni for sale, and in the interim until I build the Gryphon (frames due stateside in October).
I've made some temporary alterations to his bike (mainly from my commuter parts bin), and it is an absolute blast to ride.

- Jeff Jones "Loop" H-bar
- Schwalbe Big Apple 2.35 tires
- rack, dynamo front wheel, lights
- venerable Brooks saddle
- lockout on suspension fork (0 travel)

The bike is super fun to ride, and I'm finding the big apples to roll surprisingly well. I am averaging similar speeds as I do on the Marinoni, with much less anxiety about road conditions.

So, here's the monster:

Sorry to hear that you're selling both bikes; I really enjoyed reading about their evolution and seeing the pics.

Looks like fun! What dynohub is that?

Mardmakarm 08-17-11 03:15 AM

Canyoneagle, really nice bike you got!But why using batteries headlight while you already use E3? :o

XB, how do you like those tires? Hadn't heard of them before, but those may be my next tires.

The E3 is my "see" light, and the PB Blaze 2W (must be what you are referring to) is always on blink mode ("be seen"). I run both lights night or day.
I have a similar setup on back, with the E3 triple LED tail light on steady and a PB SF or Radbot 1000 on blink.

The "steady" lights might be fine on their own at night, but the blinkies are a necessity during the day.

The Marinoni was always a "project", and, as much as I love the bike, I had never intended to keep it long term.

The dynamo hub is the Shimano Alfine. The drag is not noticeable when riding.
