It looks like a Brooks Glenbrook.

Here is my new commuter/touring bike I just built up. I am so happy with how this bike turned out, This has been my dream build for the last few years and a customer came in with this bike in perfect condition asking to get rid of it. use to have a flatbar and be a hybrid 7speed. it is now a touring/commuter with a full sunrace 9 speed drivetrain a few bontrager parts here and there, and also some brand new Conti Tour ride tires . I LOVE IT!!!!!

ah, the crotch view. very nice.

RubeRad 09-08-15 01:45 PM

Whoa that camera has some serious lens distortion in pic3, or your chain really needs to be lubed!

How's the sunrace shift for you? When you say 'full' how much did it cost and how many components were included? RD obviously, but FD? Shifters? Crank?

This is one of my wife’s two commuter bikes. I just finished getting this one back up and running. It’s a 1993 Trek Multitrack 730, and I know the year because it was the first new bike she ever bought herself; she got it while she was in medical school. It was pretty trashed, in a good way. I’ve never seen a cassette or chainrings so worn out!

I replaced a lot of the old parts with cheap but good ebay parts: an Alivio rear derailleur, a cheap Sugino crankset I found for $30, cheap v-brakes, etc. She sometimes gets wrist pain when she bikes for a while, so I got a huge stem to get the bars up, and used moustache bars (upside down) for multiple hand positions. It has a 7-speed cassette and an 8-speed shifter, which you can make work via some creative cable routing (thanks Sheldon Brown!). The shifting is right on. I really like the rack: it’s a steel Wald. Because of the 700C wheels and tiny frame I had to use a makeshift extender to get it level.

A brand new 22-year-old bike!

RubeRad 09-09-15 11:53 AM

Classy. The moustaches, gum tires, and rack all look cool. And I'm a big fan of fluted seatposts.

After trying numerous different bikes (buying, tinkering and selling) I've finally found MY perfect commuter.

Do you ride with the saddle that low?

Yes, it's a large 29er and at 5'8" my legs are pretty stretched. Why...does it look weird?

RubeRad 09-10-15 08:38 AM

I don't see any problems with that seat height, as long as you're comfy it's all good!

If the saddle has to be that low, you are more than likely on the wrong size frame. At that height, you are probably better suited on a medium rather than a large.

himespau 09-10-15 09:34 AM

Unless he/she has a proportionally longer torso than legs. Then it could be just the right size. Especially if they like riding more upright.

My back likes riding more upright, at 65 yrs old I'm not as bendy as I used to be. My legs may be a little short (31 inseam) but I don't consider myself deformed.:) I'm very comfortable riding this Marin and my budget just won't allow me to buy another bike. I really appreciate the considerate suggestions and observations.

PennyTheDog 09-10-15 11:14 AM

Thanks, RubeRad! I kept everything is cheap as possible, because I know the nostalgia bit isn't that big a deal to her. I'm like, "look, it's your first bike!" And she's like, "yeah, but I have a new bike now." I don't know what I like so much about that rack, but I love it-- I'm going to get that one again.

haha I've never seen a "fluted" seat post before. Sort of reminds me of a lightsaber or something. [/nerd] :P

More common in vintage, I think, when high-end seatposts were still metal. Apparently fluting, along with drillium, was just for weight, although pantographed fluting can be very pretty.

Drizzling in Tucson?! So you guys 'stole' the chance of rain that was promised to SoCal yesterday in this blazing heat!

Hehe, yeah, the rain did cool it off here, but it was still over 80 deg. (while it was raining) and 100% humidity at 10am.

I commend you. I saw the sprinkles in Phoenix and decided to drive.

Although, my commute is almost 40 miles round trip and the thought of getting caught in a downpour on the way didn't sound all that fun.

I took the pics with a gopro, by full drivetrain I mean cassette chain rear derail and bar end shifters. I manage a bike shop so I get a little discount off of parts. I think retail for all the parts im in approx $400 with the tires new rear wheel the drivetrain components brake levers bars and some bar tape.also the sunrace is great. I have never been so please with a lesser value shimano part. We sell a large quantity of them as replacements and have less complaints about SR than Shim factory parts. I have not changed out the front der or the crankset. I am going with a fsa crankset I have in my spare parts bin at home, so im just gooing to blow this crank and BB out first.

I have one, StrongLight brand, on my old Schwinn. It's not original to the bike, and I can't remember where it came from.
