Here's my main commuter:
http://home.comcast.net/~bennett12/red_schwinn.jpg Mid 1980s Schwinn Mesa Runner MTB. Crankset is Suntour Blaze from a yard sale Specialized road bike. Nitto Northroad bars and Delta AirZound Horn from Harris Cyclery. Brooks B.17 and cork grips from Hiawatha Cyclery. Nashbar rear rack and "Townie" grocery bag panniers. Two Cateye EL200 lights up front, Planet Bike Superflash on seatpost. SKS/ESGE fenders from the half price table at LBS. Michelin Transworld City tires. NOS Suntour pedals from a thrift store. |

Do you have a closer shot of the front end of the bike on the left? I'm curious as to how the hell that child seat works.

I posted my brevet bike to the Long Distance forum a week or so ago, but posting it here too, since I also use it as a commuter.
http://pics.livejournal.com/cris/pic/0005ek22 Custom ANT Club Racer Drivetrain is mixed Shimano Ultegra and Deore XT. Wheels are hand-built 36 spoke 700C on Mavic Open Sports with an ultegra hub on the back and Schmidt dynamo up front. Fenders are full-size Honjos, with tail-light mounted on the rear fender. Lighting system is a pair of E6's mounted on a custom built lighting bracket Nitto handlebars, bar end shifters, technomic stem, and Chris King headset for the cockpit. When I commute, the rack supports a pair of 46L MEC Serratus Aqua-Not panniers. http://pics.livejournal.com/cris/pic/0005g8ad more pics: on my LJ gallery. |
Nice rig, love the lights!

Picture of my new/ first commuter bike
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...bikepic003.jpg It is a Raliegh Glacier Trek Rack Bell Headlight and Taillight Cateye Enduro 8 computer Publix Milk Crate :D I just started commuting to work on it 2 weeks ago, I had to replace the BB last weekend after I put 150 miles on it, other then that it has been a great bike for me. Not much to look at but it works for me! The only plans I have for changing this bike is that I want to go to some slicks and some fenders possibly. I am waiting for the old tires to wear out before I do that thought so I dont have an extra set of tires just laying around. (Also I dont know what width tires I want for it yet either) |

The only thing I would change would be the saddle. Wouldn't happen to be a 58cm, would it? (Hope you didn't mind me posting a few of my favorite pics from your link.) One more question. Who designed/fabricated your custom front light rack? |
New Commuter

Hello, this is my first post in these forums. I just purchased a used bike as a commuter to get to and from work on the cheap. Its nothing special, but the wheels turn, and the engine gets upgraded it seems every ride!
The only thing which concerns me are the brakes, I think they are too old and need to be replaced, but I can't afford it right now and I don't really know what is involved, so the bike will have to perform as is for now. It is an old Raleigh Record with I'm pretty sure almost all original parts. I added the rack and of course the hideously inefficient U-Lock myself. |

the rack was designed and built by Mike Flanigan of ANT. I was originally just going to have the lights mounted to the bike fork, but he thought it would be wiser to create some kind of mounting bracket to protect them in case of falls or tipovers. Unfortunately, if you're considering getting one, he only builds the racks as specific custom accessories for the bikes that he builds. |

I just bought the bike about 3 weeks ago and at the time knew nothing about bikes (still dont actually). I agree that I do need a new chain, maybe something I can do this weekend if I have the time. Last weekend it was $40 for a BB :( . So between a new BB and a new chain, that will double the price I paid for the bike......

But don't feel too bad. I paid $2 for that bike (it's posted somewhere far back in this thread) and had to replace the BB bearings and buy a seat post. I spent many times my initial investment getting mine on the road. :D |

Good beans, I'd be scared poop-less of having it scratched, doored, stolen or otherwise molested... Do be careful, kind Sir. |
I lowered the stem cause it was so windy.
