Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

I commute on a mountain bike in New Jersey suburban rush hour traffic with Ergon grips that have built-in barends. They're great for traffic, I feel I have more control with them. Be aware, though: you need to spend some time firrling with the angle of the barends and the grips to get a maximum return.

You should really recommend bar ends. I "stole" mine of a stolen bike; they improve comfort to a whole other level.

Opinions on the bike will be appreciated.

I wish I would've waited to get a Surly though =/

MountainXracer commuter

I love doing up old bikes for commuting and over the years I have arrived at this as my every day commuter. Built from 'best bits' salvaged off old bikes, and some new parts - saddle & post, tyres, grip tape. The hat box is part of the commuter - an 'aero' trunk.
The gear levers work nicely even when wearing thick gloves. The suicide brake levers work beautifully in combination with the cantilevers, so I have good brakes from any hand position.

I'd bet it's not actually so slow. Those tires are mostly air, after all. Cool Pugsley, Hardy!

My Daily...

Here's mine - 1996 KHS mountain bike. Stripped, painted, chopped bars and ends, Crank Bros. pedals, Mavic Cross Ride wheels. Commute between 5-15 miles daily and take CalTrain from the Peninsula to SF. Owned the bike since new, crashed it multiple times both on and off the dirt and it keeps taking the beating.

The extra-large milk crate is attached with zip ties. The only non-stock piece is the handlebars, courtesy of Electra.

So does the greater sweep of the handlebars allow you to be more upright? I've been thinking about something different from the stock Breezer ones.

I don't have much of a commute right now (1.6 miles one-way) but this is generally what I do it on. 2006 RANS Fusion, with a home-made rear rack and kickstand. I've got a recumbent for longer-distance riding.
