I want knickers..

It's true. I want a pair of knickers but I want to make them from old pants. I know Hell Yes makes re-knicks, which are recycled dockers. Anybody know where I can find instructions or a good seamstress/tailor in NYC where I can get them altered?

Thanks!

Crap! I was just on a site from a guy that makes cycling hats, and he was talking about DIY knickers...

Really easy though. Cut them to about 2" longer than you want, fold it inside, then sew the hem closed. Once you've done that, cut a little slit and add your drawstring (tie the string to a paper clip so you can push it through)

Knickers are a great "first-time-sewing" project...

Cool.. I'm thinking of putting buttons and darts around the knees. Like this.. https://www.fixedgeargallery.com/hell...cks/index.html

I have a few pairs, I think i'm just going to give it a shot!

EDIT: Oh, and I'm going to post pics!

I just use the pant leg width of the existing pants, so that I can take them off or put them on over shoes. I don't know that knee darts really constitute an "articulated knee", but if it appeals to you, go for it. That's the beauty of homemade -- it's customized to your liking.

Technically, those are not knickers then. They would be capris or whatever.

Bikes: A few

I have made a number of pairs over the years. I started out with using some wool dress pants, but everyone eventually ripped in the crotch. Since then I have been using military BDU pants. Actually I have a pair on right now. The pants are under $30 brand new and can be found cheaper on sale. I always bought mine from https://www.bdu.com/ since every order over $50 ships free.

Instructions for home-made knickers

Here are some decent instructions for diy knickers. I purchased some plain front (non-pleated), dark gray, cuffed dress pants from ebay in my waist size but with an inseam 6" shorter than normal and ran a lace thru the cuffs for tightening. They work brilliantly in cool weather-between 30 and 55 degrees.

I bought two pairs of Dickies, put a safety pin where I wanted it to be hemmed, and then took it to the dry cleaners and had them do it for me.

Mid-calf and they're capris.
Just below the knee (and preferrably a very 'loud' fabric) and they're Jams.

How many people are wearing knickers? I would wear them, but my wife vetoed them. Maybe we should do a poll....

What is the advantage of knickers over cut-offs capris?

Personally, I like the DIY look of camo BDU's hacked off mid calf.

Knickers are not drafty while riding.

Bikes: IRO Mark V, Karate Monkey half fat, Trek 620 IGH, Cannondale 26/24 MTB, Amp Research B3, and more.

I bought a couple of pairs of used winter-weight wool army dress pants at the Army/Navy store for something like $12 each. Then ran a slit up the calf about 8 inches and seamed it to tighten them up some (I can just get them over hiking boots) and then shortened them a few inches. They are more like jodhpurs (sp?) than knickers, but they are fantastic for cold weather utility riding.

I cannot attest to their fashionability though. Its hard to be out there in the jodhpur vangard with Hitler and Patton, but I am trying.

The advantage is I can say to my wife, " I can't find my knickers!" without getting flamed. Where as, I said, "Honey? Have you seen my Capri's?" She would let the jokes fly.

BTW, I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing capris if that's what suits you.

It's not a matter of speed - it's a matter of cold weather.

Knickerbockers are lovely. Too bad I can't wear them at work.

Good site find! If the local surplus doesn't have anything that I like, I'll be ordering from them.

English geek here:

The pants called "Knickers" were given their name from a Washington Irving character in History of New York.

Bikes: 2003 Trek 520, 1996 Trek 370, 1996 Bianchi Osprey, too many others.

Alright, this has got be be one of those Proper English/American English translation things, like cleaner/janitor, lift/elevator, bonnet/hood or boot/trunk.

But seeing grown men have an extended dialogue about making their own knickers is breaking me up.

THIS is a pair of knickers:

THIS rider is wearing a particularly brief pair of knickers:

An American, I suppose, would call this variety of knickers a "thong", whereas to an Australian a pair of thongs looks like THIS:

When a bloke starts a thread called " I want knickers.. " I feel just a little bit uncomfortable.
