A nice commute here in DC -- the (light) rain stopped just as I left home, which left it cool and comfortable. Also my first commute with a rack on my bike, which was much nicer than carrying everything in a backpack.

I "slept in" an extra 30 minutes this morning because I was out drinkin' and causin' trouble last night, then I got home and just had to install the iPhone 3.0 update.

It was just starting to rain when I left for work. Fortunately it didn't rain hard enough to make me wet. Just a bit damp. Temp around 60F. I passed 4 heavily-loaded bicycle tourers on the MUP. Impressive. Big panniers with rain covering. Center-stands. I bet they weighed a ton.

I too wussed today, not due to rain, it was really pretty nice at 0500 but my legs were tired, I have ridden every day for a while. It is raining big time right now. Looks like I picked a good day not to ride.

decent commute today- my new specialized cyclometer decided it didn't want to record any more- i tried to adjust the wheel magnet and the pickup but nothing- i was in good spirits and enjoying the ride until i was about 5 miles from work and could feel a might strong case of the trots welling up inside. quickly my mind turned to locating a pocket of urban forest along the way so i could drop the bibs and unload- to no avail- i kicked it into high gear, cadence be damned and turned the last few miles into one huge interval. i made it!

Yesterday on the way home I was hoping for a nice relaxed ride, but as soon as I came out of the bike room it had already started raining very lightly. So it was another hard charge home. I got lucky and didn't get caught in any rain.

The way in to work this morning was another power struggle and again I was hoping for a gentle ride. It was good though and took an alternative route.

Everyime I ride my road bike (my only bike) I dont feel like buying any CX bike (which I'll inevitably will need for winter riding).

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

A wet, soggy ride in, and I think I left my book on the train.

No commute today, vacation day.

I'm going to ride down the west end today though (probably) then back this way with my BF and our mutual friend, gonna watch them play frisbee golf.

I got buzzed by a bus today when preparing to make a left turn. I had controlled the lane for 3-4 blocks due to conditions (construction taking the road down to one lane, followed by a thru lane and a right-turn lane that gets onto a freeway, followed by a through lane and a left-turn lane for the same freeway, followed by a left turn by me a block after the freeway).

Apparently the bus got impatient and passed me on the left (just before I turned left- I started to signal and almost touched the bus!) I was in the LH tire track and the bus had two wheels in my lane and two over the double yellow. I got his bus number.

I met the head of the transportation authority last month ironically enough on Bike To Work Day (he's a cyclist, too!) I plan on sending him an email explaining what happened, and will ask him to give all the drivers some training regarding bicycles. Knowing that he's a fellow cyclist, I am going to try to approach this as an opportunity to do a little bike advocacy that most people will never hear about but will make cyclists safer. We'll see what comes of that.

Ding, Ding,Ding. My morning commute.

This morning, as I pull up to an intersection, I heard this church bell ringing. There were no cars, no birds, no planes, and no sounds of any kind. The sound of the church bell, with no other sounds, gave me a chill down my spine. For a split second, I felt like I was the only person left on earth. God it was amazing. Have any one of you had a surreal moment like this while you are commuting to work?

Ride in was pretty good today. Rain had cleared off by the time I left, so just some puddles to deal with along the way and a wet surface. Rooster tail mud on my hindquarters reminds me that the fenders I want to get should be a priority

I'm into my second week back in the saddle after a month of not being able to ride or commute. I felt it in my legs big time when I started again, but now the strength is starting to come back. Carrying a little more speed and a higher gear on those MUP overpasses and climbs up to bridge decks... feels good.

Hoping the rain stays at bay long enough for a dryish ride home.

Well my rides to work and back this week so far have been wonderful. I have been trying to keep my speeds at nothing less then 15 mph, with a avg. high speed at 29 mph [down hill at one point of my trip into work. ] coming home up the hill I am getting avg. speed of 12 mph. then after leveling off I can get back to 15 mph. Cars have been a little heavy, but all have given me the space need to make me feel good about riding.

My ride was very, very soggy. The rain here in DC had pretty much stopped by the time I left, but when I got to the Northwest Branch trail, I found that all the rain that fell during the night was just making it into the river! Two of the culverts that the trail crosses usually have about an inch or two of water in them, but today, it was about 2 feet! I put my pannier on my handle bars and rode through, but my feet were soaked. Hopefully, not too much water got into my nexus hub, but I know it was submerged on both crossings. Ugh... I rode exclusively on the roads on my way home.

Great 4am 10 mile commute in Portland this morning. ~60F No rain, dropped the panniers for a backpack, average speed went from 15mph to 19mph. This is only the 3rd second week I have been commuting using this bike and less then a month since bike commuting at all.

On the way home its a bit more exciting, more traffic and a different route.

i'm loving this forum and all the great looking 'Classic & Vintage' bikes.

Nice week of riding for me. Aside from a good soaking yesterday morning it's been slightly cooler than the norm and very enjoyable.

This morning: 62F/16-ishC and calm, a few clouds, and a sliver of moon still showing in the twilight. So nice that I had to force myself to keep my mind on the ride--it felt that natural and good.

And I guess either this morning or Monday morning will be as light as it gets all year for my 5:00 AM jaunts. Happy solstice everyone!

It was a good ride in. The weather has been mostly wet, but not today, 60 F ( 16 C). I avoided
one nitwit today, who looked right at me coming down a hill with all my lights on and some flashing.
He decided to make a right turn right in front of my path. Ironically, I adjusted my brakes on Wed,
because I had problems stopping in the rain. I avoided his car and the only thing I lost was
momentum going up the next hill. The fellow had one of those "my son is an eagle scout" bumper
stickers, and I thought to myself, hopefully, his son never went out for a cycling merit badge, or
his father might have run over him.

I got up too late to ride in today so I drove. I did note 4 other commuters that I have never seen as I rode in and one of them almost had on as much Fred gear to match me. It was kinda nice to see that I'm not the only guy in town that bicycles to work.

One of these days the wind gods will shine on me and let me have a tailwind both ways. I know it requires a shift in wind direction during the day, but that same shift has been happening the other way around several days this week, such that I have a headwind coming and going. I know this is true from:

1. Observed wind in trees
2. Direction planes take off as I pass the airport
3. NWS data online

Bad luck, I guess. Or good perhaps? It is a better workout.

At least as consolation in a way, I found another way to end my ride to work that's probably shorter than the way I normally go and a bit more scenic. Also gets me away from the river quicker, so wind is less of an issue. Of course, it means I have to share the route with more tourons, I mean, tourists, so that might impact how often I ride it...

Rode in to work all five days this week and did a ride on Sunday, too, so that's six days in a row of clycling. Feeling good!

When people ask me how the ride was, I tell them I had a headwind in both directions, which is the case roughly 70% of the time. They don't seem to believe that the wind changes direction by the afternoon. I'm curious to see if the weather service tracks those trends, I'd like to verify this.

I start looking for signs of wind direction as I leave work: the flags around the Wash Monument, trees, flags atop construction equipment near Pentagon, flight paths, speed of oncoming cyclists, etc. I can usually confirm that it's a headwind by the time I've crossed the 14th Street Bridge-the wind socks at the airport only serve to rub it in. In the morning, it's not really obvious until about the time I hit the airport, since I've been riding surface streets that are buffered by buildings/houses.

The wind changes here too. Not everyday but regularly.

Woke up this morning, the back deck was wet. But ... it wasn't raining at the time and the clouds even looked like they were trying to clear, and I've missed a couple commuting days this week, so what the heck, I went for it.

Got to the bottom of my hill and it was pouring rain. The soaking continued for the remaining 14 miles of my commute.

Oh well, it was still a decent ride and a nice way to start the day. But I'm not looking forward to putting those soggy clothes back on for the ride home this afternoon. Of course, it will probably still be raining then so I'll be soaked anyway.
