How was the commute today? Continued.
#6826
had to commute to a variety of locations today. The final one was a business meeting at a restaurant about 7 miles from where we all work. I rode the 10 miles home. Did some grocery shopping then rode to the meeting. I was there 10 minutes early and the first one there. Amazing to sit there as people are circling the block in their cars looking for a place to park. At the end of the meeting, I suppose this was kind, I was asked if I wanted to throw my bike in the back of a car for the ride home. It's so funny how inconvenient a car feels to me.

I overslept this morning and didn't have my pannier packed with the days clothes. Took a while to get things ready and leisurely rode into work. It's been in the 40's in the morning and my toes were a little cold. I gotta find a new pair of toe covers for my shoes once the temp drops. My current pair look like a stole em from a homeless guy.

It was cold this morning at 28 F ( -2 C). I am never ready for the cold, but by January, I will be wishing for 28 F ( -2 C). Everything stayed warm, but my face, and I am just not ready to cover it up.

Yikes, I was chilled this morning but it was crisp and clear. My computer said 39 just as I was leaving my apt.

Mid 30sF. Sun not quite up yet. My bike computer was reading 29F / -1C for a little while. Maybe I went through a cold spot. Didn't see any other cyclists but there were a few runners out. Cute regular runner girl now says hi every time we meet.

32F, clear skies. Sun was just peaking over DC when I got to Key Bridge. I was well dressed, except for my fingers! Had some new full finger gloves (never worn) but apparently they are not rated for 32. Fortunately I had some windstopper gloves and just pulled them over the bike gloves and then I was fine. I had a nice ride in today, and then in my building, ran into another female bike computer who gave me a great tip on a little-known (and well hidden) bike rack in my building. Will check it out at lunch.

Mid 30s, sunny and clear. Definitely glad to have the wind pants on this morning, though my cycling shorts and T were pretty sweaty under the wind pants and wind and warm layers by the time I arrived. My hands did fine today, other than some brief moments of cool fingers when I started, but my head was pretty cold starting out. Not cold enough to want a real warm layer, though. Perhaps a wind cover for the helmet?

Perfect! Nice and brisk. Just the thing I needed to reverse the effects of all the beer last night celebrating the Giants!

I'm still deciding between bus and bike. I feel a sore throat coming on, so I feel like I should let my body focus on that, but my legs are itching to go. I think my legs are winning...it looks so nice outside...

+6C so I wore shorts today. All the sand the city put on the roads last week is making a huge mess, my bike and panniers are splattered with dirt. Supposed to be +11C and sunny for the ride home.

Stopped to vote on the way to work. Fellow bike commut4er was unlocking and heading off just as I arrived to lock up and go in to vote.
Had my closest near miss in a while on the way in to work after voting. 8:45 AM. Sun is already up and it's bright out. The lady turns right from a side street onto the main street I was on. I was doing 18-20 mph in this stretch (it's an ever so slight downhill). She had stopped, but she didn't look to see if anything was coming. I know because I was trying to establish eye contact as I approached. Having made none I got leary of the situation. Good thing I did, because she pulled right into my path. Had she looked, she would have had a clear line of sight to me in my BRIGHT ORANGE long sleeve tee-shirt and my front blinkie going. Good thing for her I wasn't a Mack truck, or she'd be in a world of hurt right now. Don't know WHAT she was thinking. Locked up my brakes trying to slow down and came within a couple feet of her rear bumper as she started to accelerate. Too bad that she had all her windows rolled up on this chilly morning, or she would have actually hear me yell at her, "WHOA! Look before you turn next time!!!" I thought some other less pleasant things, but refrained from yelling them. She wouldn't have heard them anyway. Honestly, I don't think she ever knew I was there even after she pulled out. I tried to chase her down at the next traffic light, but it turned green and she was off before I got to roll up next to her and give her some friendly advice, or at least a friendly hand gesture or a WTF were you thinking look.
Apart from the near miss with the oblivious woman, it was a nice commute in this morning. Getting into the colder mornings. It was in the 30s. I had a pair of base layer tights under a pair of cargo shorts, and a long sleeve shirt over a short sleeve shirt. Half-finger gloves. A little cold at the start, but felt perfect once I got warmed up a mile or so into the ride. Could ride harder and not sweat at all. Lovin' it! Perfect.

I saw the speed of the car this morning as he approached the exit and assumed he wasn't going to stop. Always assume the cagers are out to get you and act accordingly. I need to get an Airzound.

Funny how quickly I am acclimating to the colder temps. Yesterday I was doubling up on layer @ 28 F; today I though the 40 F temps were downright balmy. By Christmas, I be cheering warm temps in the mid 20s.

Well, I've found the limit of my tires, 2900 km and the back is threadbare. I guess there is a downside to full fenders, I can't see the condition of the tire until I wear a hole in it. Booted the tire last night and I'm going to make an attempt to run out to MEC for replacements. It's bulging, but holding air. Woke late and got to work late which isn't helping me get out early.

Good advice. Fortunately, that's what I do, and I had stopped pedaling as I approached this driver and assumed she was going to pull out, so I was ready to jam on the brakes. I shudder to think where I'd be right now if I just kept pedaling through there at 20 mph and ran right into her car as she pulled out... YIKES! Or, like I said, where she'd be if I had been a Mack truck and not an alert cyclist. All's wall that ends well, I suppose, for now.

She looked pretty surprised when I was almost on top of her. Then she hit the gas to get out of my way.

BTW, all those amazing photos on National Geographic, etc. are photoshopped too. Most people shoot RAW and then edit the heck out of their images. This one was shot with.... An iPhone

First bike commute since last Weds after two running days and a long weekend of fulltime childcare. Roads a bit damp this morning but blazing sun now - tomorrow's supposed to be a run day but an extended commute on the road bike is looking tempting.

great ride this morning. Up early to vote. Rode to the polls. A little different route in this morning due to construction on the bike path. Because of the voting and new route I kind of lost track of the time and started to think that I was running late (I don't have a clock on my bike or a wrist watch and I didn't want to pull out my cell phone.) Turns out I was a good 1/2 hour ahead of schedule as I pulled into work. Ride home tonight after a very long day was a nice ride home in the dark.
