Not bad today at 13 F ( -10 C ). There was no wind and no breeze, just cold, and it makes all the difference in the world. It is supposed to snow today, but in the afternoon, so no problem there.

19f Nothing seemed to want to work this morning, after a week of rain and 40f+ weather this rapid freeze wasnt kind to the bike. My freewheel wouldn't engage my chain was frozen and rear derailleur was stuck, i was able to get it all working pretty quick, just an annoying way to start the morning

30F and icy. No problem with the studs, though. If fact, coming down a gradual hill leading out of my subdivision I caught up to and had to slow for a pickup truck who was driving cautiously.

I wish I had a horn to honk at him. And I could have yelled, "Get off the effin road!".

Good thinking. I'd obviously thought about full-fingered gloves. Paired with flip over mittens, that could prove a very comfortable solution. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea.

Temps in the low 20s F as I rode in this morning. Saw three or four fellow commuters. Not bad given they're calling for snow today and I came in late (left home around 9:15).

And the snow is coming down. I started just as I approached my office, hasn't let up since, and there's actually some accumulation on the streets (which I had heard were being pre-treated). This puts the afternoon commute in jeopardy. Might have to leave my bike parked downstairs and metro home. Booooooooooooooooooo-hissssssssssss!

44F and Rain... First time I had real rain in that temp. It wasn't as pleasant as I envisioned unfortunately. My tights kept me fine for lower half. Upper half had major drenching... (not from rain but from sweat) when I wore long sleeve jersey and rain jacket on top. After 14 miles sitting in train became damp and chill and not a pleasant experience. Also found out while the wool sock kept me warm, my shoe got pretty wet. Sock dried up in 30 minutes once in office but I am not sure how long shoe will take to dry up. (Have small heater here and been blasting it at the shoes)
I really need to look at some good weather proof jacket that can vent. Most of rain will come in around 35-50f in here. (if it is warmer, I could care less if I get wet from rain typically)

Other than that, I am happy I finally am on my 4th consecutive round trip of my commute. (30 miles each day...) Steps up from 3 mile round trip I started 6 months ago.

34F and thick fog. Which produces that wonderful effect of frozen mist crystals on your sleeves.

Well the ride in this morning was easy enough, no wind, cold but bearable. This ride home is going to be very interesting.

Ride in was cold but nice; ride home was interesting, as dcb23 put it--the first dusting of snow. Today I was very glad to have a folding bike! Rode a couple blocks to the subway, folded it up, hopped on, and rode the few blocks from my stop to my house. It was definitely slick out with enough snow on the ground to cause an accident.

Today I got all geared up only to find it was raining. Felt bummed about not riding and wussing out. I can ride in the cold but the rain and wet conditions bring a lot more variables into my commute. Just a beginner commuter here and I know that I have to HTFU one of these days LOL.

Single digit temps, clear and beautiful. Windstorm from the last two days has mostly scoured the MUP down to fast hardpack, with the occasional drift.

Except for the quarter mile or so between Fish Creek and the RR tunnel, which is just one giant snowdrift:

There was just enough clear path between the drift and the fence to fit a bike through, and I only had to walk about 20 feet.

Gusty wind out of the north starting this morning - but temps were still very mild. I reaped the benefits of a tailwind on the way home - which was really nice for a change!

Just cold at 13 F ( -10 C). The secondary roads are in much better shape today, still icy, but very manageable. Yesterday, being the first snow fall, the roads were a mess. Earlier traffic created tracks that froze under more snow, so riding was difficult. I came to one intersection and
going left uphill, I just couldn't get any traction, so I went straight and came out the way going right. After watching traffic on one of the
hills, I just got up on the sidewalk and finished that stretch. At the last intersection, I just got into the right lane and stayed there, traffic
got in the left and no one complained. Most drivers seemed cautious, so that was good. I am on my MTB today and it did a good job. All in all it was only 2 in ( 5 cm) by the time it was finished, but being the first one, it is always messy.

Cold at 19F and very slick. I decided to take public transit at first, then walked a block from my house and realized I could bike at least part of the way. Took it slow and rode a mile from my house to the subway stop, then a mile from the subway to my office. I got to work on time, when otherwise I would have had to transfer twice (subway, subway, bus) and would have been late for sure. A good day for a folding bike

Got a couple of inches of light fluff last night. The MUP (now pedestrian-ruined packed snow under fluff) is unrideable with the W106's so I took roads.

I'm praying to the bike gods that my recently-ordered Ice Spikers arrive at the LBS (1 block away) today so they can mount them for my ride home. I wish pedestrians would walk in their own $(@* track. That's my annual rant.

Temps were around 15F/9C. No wind.

-13C/9F. Thought I was coming down with a cold, so I wore my down jacket for the first time this year, but it was too warm. On the plus side it gives me confidence for the even colder days ahead in January.

Excellent commute in at 16F and dawn to sunny with no winds. Sadly this will be my last commute to school till the end of January. Already took one final this morning and I have one at 2pm, then I'm done with the semester. My first final was at 8:30am, so I left my house about 6:45am, and what a difference. There was a lot less traffic on the roads then when I usually leave at 7:15 for my usual 9:05 class.

I have new (greater) respect for you guys who regularly ride in snow. I decided that today was the day to see whether I could actually do it, and... I guess the answer is yes, but I don't plan to make a habit of it.

mid to high 20s as I started, and I was doing okay on a snowy stretch of MUP until I came to my first hill. I pedaled part way up, then lost traction a few times, resulting in coming to a near standstill. I walked the rest of the way up that hill. Lesson learned -- gear down more than usual for hills. Didn't have to walk any more, but I did get sideways a few times. More nerve wracking, though was going down hills. Disc brakes or no, traction is limited by tires, and on cold snow, there wasn't much. Once I got to a street portion of my commute, things were better, as the roads were pretty clear (the first MUP portion runs along a high-ish speed two lane with way too much traffic to feel safe on the road). The ride on the towpath was uneventful, and the CCT was fine other than quite a bit of sliding as I went from packed snow to looser snow and back. No other cyclist in my sight, but plenty of others had been there before me :-). The rest of the ride was uneventful. I was the third bike on the rack at the office :-) Metro home tonight (planned) and hopefully the weekend will bring great melting so that my ride home on Monday will be simple.

Given the amount of snow we usually get, I can't see investing in studded tires, but I wonder if the knobbier tires on my MTB would help at all?

Knobs help on snow. Studs help on ice (and possibly very hard packed snow).

Beautiful morning! Hardly a cloud in the sky. Fair and mild, a throwback to September! First dry roads in god knows how long.

Yeah -- That's what I was thinking. As I see it, the problem is that in most cases, a day or two after it snows most of it will be ice, and it could be there for a day or for several weeks, depending on the temps. This seems like a no win for those of us at the southernmost tip of the regular snow zone.
