Cold Monday morning commute in the low 30's...but the afternoon warmed nicely to the 60's - which was nice despite having a headwind the majority of the way home. Light car traffic for a Monday too.

Commute home was better than the commute to work; temperature was a few degrees higher, and the city crews had plowed most of the MUTs that I ride. Still pretty slow going.
This was what my cassette looked like when I got home:

Cold and windy at 19 F ( -7 C), and with the windchill it is about 8 F ( -13 C). No exposed skin today, and the clothing held up, even with the gusts. Yesterday, I found myself down shifting going downhill. I got hit with one gust of wind, which slowed me down, then one right behind it almost brought me to a standstill. It was a fight to get home and to work this morning. Mostly just flurries blowing around on the ground, but
no accumulation and that is good.

Horrible ride in for me, headwind the entire way and I just barely moved it seemed. My toes are frozen (my own stupid choice of footwear). But the rest of me is in pretty good shape.

Rough ride in this morning. Cold and windy, 19F with a windchill in the single digits. Had a tailwind for the first ~4 miles, then when I turned north the gusts really hit me. Brake cable seized up about 2 miles into the ride, and my chain started sticking and skipping about a mile from the office.

[Monday] morning at about 6:00 AM...I spotted a really nice helmet LED light attached to an elastic strap lying on the road…I did consider riding off with it…It was lying in a spot likely only seen by cyclists or cager residents on the street getting into their cars. I will check again tomorrow; why let it go to waste? If not there, I will go and buy one this weekend.
Other than that, it was a nice commute at 50* F, but after a long rain Sunday. I just put on the Marathon Winter studded tires yesterday, and if colder, it would have been a perfect set-up for black ice…

I left this morning at 5:15 AM, 31* F with an approximate head/crosswind of about 12 mph. The Doppler looked clear on my route, so I took the road bike with the 23C tires. At about mile 4, a light, almost misty fine particulate snowfall began, and the road surface acquired a sheen. I was too far along to go back and switch to the beater bike with studded tires. So I rode slowly with the right foot unclipped, and would occasionally drag my neoprene shod foot on the road to check the traction. Fortunately the snow stopped after about three miles down the road, and the surface was dry for the final several miles.

First commute in over a week. Went to San Francisco (decent little burg, that), and yesterday I had to drive the Tacoma for an annual inspection.
I picked a great day to ride.
13F / -10C with about 2" of snow. The snow on the (unplowed) trail was over ice in places and even with studs it was pretty squirrelly. When I got to where I had to ride on roads, I found them in less than good condition. Mashed potato snow, really tough to ride on. The sidewalk was much better so I just hopped up there and rode on it the rest of the way.

Rode in again today, was in the high 20's with usual high humidity. I picked up a couple pairs of wool socks, and they helped some, but I still need to break out the boots if I want me feet to be really warm. Everything else is A-ok!

It was 3F but only 2mph wind. Icy in spots, especially the MUP, but the studded tires worked their magic.

Yeah, a chilly morning in DC as others have said. Headwind most of the way. Good thick wool socks made a difference for the feet.
Work sucks today. Ever wish you could freeze time to make a deadline instead of having absolutely no leeway for error? Welcome to my world today...
Oh well. Back to work!

A little windy this morning, but pretty decent ride in. The new fenders worked well, they clear the studs all the way around and are much sturdier than the ones that came with the bike. I ditched the DIY fender after it got sucked into the front tire twice on my ride home last week. From what I hear, I pulled in to work just before the thundershower and the snow started.

Low 40's, virtually no wind (yay!). Hadn't been on the bike since Friday, so it took a while to find my groove. Tried out a different saddle (Fizik Aliante), and it seemed pretty good. Time will tell. Weather guessers are calling for snow tomorrow, but we'll see 'bout that...

Working from home today, but yesterday, I took the long way home (11 miles instead of 6). It was about 30F, with a mad wind chill.
I learned that I need booties & better gloves. Oh, and my Performance Century II jacket is excellent, unless the wind comes from my front-right (about 2 o'clock), when it cuts through the zipper and past the inner flap. Other than that, my clothing worked great.

Yeah that cassette is hilarious. The smallest 4 or so of my (9) cogs looked like that this morning.
Not really commute related but I'll be commuting on them: I just ordered 2 Schwalbe Ice Spikers from the LBS. I've grown tired of the Nokian W-106 performance on the unplowed bike path. Not bashing them, they're fine tires, but they're out of their element in off-road situations.
They may arrive Friday, which means New England can look forward to a warm weekend with temperatures in the 60s, and rain, so I can't test them out.

I converted both my bikes to SS (one 74 inches, the other 66 inches) tiring of cleaning and lubing the derailleur after riding in the rains. I'm sorry to report I lost both Cat 6 races on my way to work this morning. :-(
Not blaming equipment here...I love my SS.

heavy rain, and heavy winds.
the second i get to work after an hour+ fighting the weather, the sun comes out.
edit. sun is gone, back to rain/wind/hell combo, thanks nature for not making fun of me.

Cold ride in at -10 C with a cold NW wind kicking up to 40 km/h. The roads are still a complete mess. The city dumped salt on everything and it has been too cold for it to be effective so everything is either slush or rutted ice. On the other hand I beat traffic on one section of road as all the cars got backed up due to a broken down transit bus. When I finally got to the MUP it was ploughed but not salted (thank heavens) and was able to steam in at a decent clip with the studs on the bike. The bad thing is that the rear derailleur froze and I had to go in riding a lower gear but I was still able to change chain rings up front. I brought the bike in after wiping it down to let it thaw out and I'll give it a good grease and oil job before it goes out again.
After this Friday I'm done commuting for a while... the wife is sending me in to get fixed...
Geez I wish the city didn't salt as a substitute for using the plough.

Looks like I'm done commuting for the year. Only two finals to write and then I'm off school until January. At least with studying out of the way I can get some riding in.
Total commuting for the year is 2511km / 81 round trips, since mid-May. Which means I've avoided driving my car 3252km. 3560km of total riding about half of which was on my old mountain bike.

Yesterday a double-commute as I arrived at work having forgotten my pants - but the weather was lovely.
This morning a proper wet one. Very satisfied with my new front disc brake.
Last Friday I fendered-up the road bike and commuted on that for a change. Realised as I was leaving work that evening that I'd ridden in - fast, in heavy traffic as usual - with the rear quick release open after fixing a flat the night before. Almost shat myself there and then.
